Bukit Mertajam is FLOODED with foreigners

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Things have been evolving fast in this iconic township. And Bukit Mertajam is facing a challenge to retain its identity.

Starting out as a traditional farming settlement in the early days inhabited mainly by the Chinese of Teochew and Hakka descent, the latest demographics have drastically changed.

A huge share of the economic activity is now being controlled by foreigners.

From just a handful of sundry shops catering to Bangladeshis, Nepalese, Pakistanis, Indonesians and Myanmar workers, over 100 such shops have sprouted with products and services targeted at them.“The locals are being out-muscled along the town’s main streets, ” said an elderly Bukit Mertajam resident.

Foreigners who took up manual jobs here are exploiting legal loopholes to become entrepreneurs.

The town is flooded with up to 20,000 foreigners, especially during weekends and public holidays.

In March, the Penang Public Accounts Committee (PAC) launched an inquiry on the issue of foreigners operating businesses in the state, with Bukit Mertajam identified as a hotspot.

An 88-page report it produced in May was tabled before the State Legislative Assembly.

The report stated that the modus operandi of foreign workers was to marry a Malaysian woman and later register a legitimate business under her name.

To protect the interest of the women, the committee recommended that the state only issue business licences to such companies if the shareholding was fully held by Malaysians.

That aside, the influx of the foreigners has led to a series of health and social issues. Even brothels have opened to cater to the male workers.

Carpet trader Suriakant B. Patel, who was born and bred here, asked: “They are supposed to be in Malaysia to become workers. Why then are they allowed to do business?”He is the second generation owner of his carpet shop in Jalan Datuk Ooh Chooi Cheng located at the end of four roads which is a focal point of the “foreigner-only” businesses.

Suriakant said foreigners have been taking over shoplots here since a decade ago.

“You see the red splotches by the roadside? That’s what they spit out after chewing betel nut leaves, ” he said in frustration as he took a team from the Star Media Group on a walkabout at the town centre.

Suriakant said Bukit Mertajam’s township was shaping into a place “not meant for Malaysians”.

He said about eight years ago, he tried to sell goods popular among the foreigners “but not one of them came in”.

“They would only buy from their own group, ” he said.

Suriakant revealed that Bangladeshis, Nepalese, Pakistanis, Indians and even some Myanmar nationals were “united” by speaking Hindi.

“I have observed Bangladeshis, Nepalese, Pakistanis, the Rohingya and some Myanmars conducting deals in Urdu.

“In some countries, the dialect is called Urdu. But it is basically the same, ” he said.

Suriakant pointed to a Nepalese drying white radish strips on a large piece of asbestos sheet along the Mertajam Art Walk. The white radish strips were meant for pickling.

“Asbestos cannot be used like this. If people ingest or inhale its fibres, they can get seriously ill, ’’ he said.

Another Bukit Mertajam resident, who wanted to be known as Goh, believes that the huge number of foreign men led to the sprouting of brothels.

“I am in the renovation business and work with many foreigners, and they confessed this to me.

“The prostitutes charge between RM30 and RM50 for their service. The foreigners told me the women are older locals, ’’ he said.

Read more at https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2019...rDdJmTgDDL3e.99
MELAKA: National Unity and Social Wellbeing Minister P.Waytha Moorthy is ready to accept any decision made about his current portfolio.

"I will leave it to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to decide and will accept his decision. However, I haven't been told of any changes yet," he said.

Waytha Moorthy said this on Saturday (Aug 24) after opening the "Colours of Unity" contest here organised by entrepreneur Goh Ming Kang.

Earlier, Waytha Moorthy called upon Malaysians to put aside any discontentment over certain issues and focus on the upcoming Merdeka celebration.

"The nation comes first for all of us, let us celebrate her birthday in a blissful mood," he added.

On Thursday (Aug 22), Dr Mahathir said that there may be a minor change in Cabinet portfolios soon

"I told the Cabinet that there may be a minor change in the portfolio, but not now. There is no Cabinet reshuffle, just changes in portfolio and even then, I haven't done it," said Dr Mahathir.

Read more at https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2019...tlZwygxwREvX.99

Priest STOLE 98K for gay hookup

A Pennsylvania priest stole nearly $100,000 in church donations to pay men he met on Grindr for sex acts — and to pay off his personal credit cards, prosecutors said.

The Rev. Joseph McLoone, 56, was arrested on felony theft and related charges Wednesday after investigators revealed that he opened a secret checking account in 2011 to deposit donations from parishioners at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Downingtown, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced.

McLoone, of Downingtown, then funneled the donation checks into an unauthorized “St. Joseph Activity Account” at TD Bank for the next six years and stole $98,405 in all, according to Chester County district attorney chief of staff Charles Gaza.

“Father McLoone held a position of leadership and his parishioners trusted him to properly handle their generous donations to the church,” Gaza said in a statement. “Father McLoone violated the trust of the members of St. Joseph’s for his own personal gain.”

McLoone allegedly withdrew roughly $46,000 in cash from the undisclosed account in Ocean City, New Jersey, where he owns a beach house. He also admitted to using some of the funds to pay for his “personal relationships” with other men, including $1,200 McLoone deposited into the commissary account of an inmate in a New York correctional facility, according to a criminal complaint.

The inmate, identified in court documents as Brian Miller, was never a Pennsylvania resident and had no previous connection to McLoone’s church. McLoone told investigators that Miller lived in New York City and that he met the inmate via Grindr for a sexual relationship, the complaint shows.

McLoone separately made 17 payments totaling $1,720 to men he met on Grindr via the Square online payment app and doubled the fee he collected as a stipend for each Mass, wedding and funeral held at St. Joseph’s Parish, prosecutors claim. He’s also accused of using $3,000 of the stolen funds to pay off personal credit cards

https://nypost.com/2019/08/21/priest-accuse...grindr-hookups/

A 16-YEAR age gap did not stop actress Intan Najuwa Abd Wahid (pic) from getting engaged to the love of her life, reported Kosmo!.

The 22-year-old actress of drama Kekasih Paksa Rela got engaged to a businessman named Razrul Anwar Rusli last Sunday, which was also her birthday.

Intan said the 16-year age gap was not an issue for her and strongly denied allegations that their relationship was motivated by money.

“Our love is true and it is not based on money. In fact, it is based on mutual respect and trust.
Screwed up interview but still got the job?

I screwed up my job interview yesterday badly. I think the HR just doesn't like me. She was rude and belittled me throughout the process.

I like my current job and boss but the interview I attended yesterday will offer 30-40% higher salary. So I went there without much preparation since my expectation to get that job is not that high.

Has anyone ever screwed up the interview but still got the job?

Indon to relocate Jakarta due to global warming

Not only is the megacity of Jakarta besieged by a confluence of modern ills – including pollution, overpopulation and soul-destroying traffic – it is also one of the fastest-sinking capitals in the world.

So when Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, this week suggested making somewhere else the capital, it did not come as a shock. Indeed, the idea of relocating the country’s administrative centre is almost as old as the republic itself – it was floated by Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, in 1957 and has been brought up again by several presidents since.

If the plan goes ahead, Indonesia would join a long list of countries that have changed capitals, often building cities from scratch for the purpose, from Nigeria and Brazil to Myanmar and Australia. Egypt is currently building a new, as-yet-unnamed capital in the desert to replace Cairo.

But hardly anyone in Jakarta is convinced Jokowi’s plan is serious. “People have heard this before but it is just getting more frequent now, it’s now every two to five years,” said Elisa Sutanudjaja, director of the Rujak Centre for Urban Studies, with a laugh. “It’s just really distracting.”

After a cabinet meeting on Monday days after the city was hit by severe flooding, Indonesia’s planning minister, Bambang Brodjonegoro, said the president had decided to move the capital. However, he provided almost no detail, prompting the ire and derision of Jakarta’s urbanists.

“You don’t solve a problem by just moving it away,” Sutanudjaja said. “Jakarta is quite similar to Tokyo in the 1960s, with its land subsidence, flooding, natural disasters and overcrowding. If you really want to solve the problem then they should tackle it, not just move it.”

The president’s Instagram account on Tuesday posted a bird’s-eye view photograph of Jakarta’s hyper-urban sprawl and mused about whether the city could continue to shoulder the burden of being both Indonesia’s economic and administrative hub.

https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/apr...sts-new-capital

Dr M not worried approval rating has dropped

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said he is not worried that the approval rating for him and Pakatan Harapan has dropped.

The Prime Minister said it was normal for a government to be criticised, unlike the Opposition.

"When you are in the Opposition, all you do is criticise. You do nothing, so there is nothing to criticise.

"We are aware that when we become the government, we will be criticised and lose some of our popularity," he said

Last Saturday (April 27), the Merdeka Centre said that Dr Mahathir's approval rating as the Prime Minister fell to 46% from a high of 71% in August last year, according to a poll it conducted.

The opinion research firm also found that the Pakatan government's rating was at 39%, compared with 79% from that same period in 2018.

In a statement, the Merdeka Centre said the decline in ratings are likely to be attributable to three factors: the condition of the economy as perceived by ordinary consumers, the perceived performance of the administration, and concerns over Malay rights and privileges, as well as fair treatment of the other races in Malaysia.

Read more at https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2019...Mg3P6y6ZuOuh.99

Got a verbal job offer. What should I do?

Finally I e-mailed HR department yesterday to find out about my job application status in Company A I attended for interview few weeks ago. The HR e-mailed to me that I got the job offer but they are now in the process of preparing my offer letter.

I already got a job offer from Company B last week, but I really want to work for Company A because:

1. Company A offers me a position that I am really passionate to pursue for the rest of my career
2. Company A offers me higher salary (more than 1K higher than Company B).

However, I still have yet to receive an official offer from company A. I am scared that if I turned down offer from Company B, I will be left disappointed if something were to happen to the offer from Company A.

I have 8 days left to decide whether I want to accept job from company B.

What should I do?

My previous thread:

https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&#entry92487294
