autoworld dead

autoworld was a treasure trove for historical car news circa 2000 - 2010 but seems to finally bit the bullet. Website doesn't load.

Thank you to the parent company (cannot remember which one) for keeping it afloat for so many years.

Meanwhile sites like autocarmalaysia and motaauto exist.

Chips Yap back at Motor Trader

Don't think anyone cares but thought I'll share nonetheless.

Shortly after the last issue of Motor Trader physical magazine, I noticed Chips moved to piston.my (where Chris Wee wrote for before Aurizn). Chips' last post on piston.my was in July 2023. I thought that Chips retired... but then yesterday discovered he's now writing for motaauto.com with the earliest post dated June 2023.

What I found interesting is that at the bottom of moaauto posts, you'll find a link like "Find pre-owned BMW models at Motor Trader Malaysia".

My point is - Motor Trader Malayisa is trying yet again at an online automotive news portal.

Side note:

Motor Trader used to be under PROTO Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. Now is under MT Digital Sdn Bhd. Not sure if they just rebranded or the branding license was sold off.

PROTO Malaysia also holds/held the license to Autocar Asean/Malaysia.

https://autocarmalaysia.com/ up until April 2023 on the homepage stated that they're site was in partnership with Motor Trader.

Shower Water Pressure Inquiry

To improve water pressure with this setup, I’ve tried changing the angle valve to one with less restriction (wider outlet visually). I think it improved but still not satisfying.

Will changing from flexible piping to rigid piping straight into the heater improve pressure or more recommended to install heater with built in pump?

Do newer heaters consume less electricity than old units like AC or no?

Engine Overhaul, 1993 Accord

I'm overseeing the repairs for a 1993 Accord EFI manual that belongs to my family.

Essentially been unused for the last 2 and a half years. Stopped using because didn't need the car and repairs was needed. Now car is needed again, and family is willing to pay for the repairs needed.

Looking to do full overhaul of the engine because of the issue of white smoke out of exhaust pipe. 1 mechanic said something like piston rings.

Inquired around (location: Penang island),

some mechanics don't do overhaul,

some mechanics said car is too old,

1 mechanic estimate around RM5k,

Another mechanic said could go up to RM7k.

For fun, inquired with a mechanic in Selangor, estimate RM3k - very tempting but I don't think the car can survive a drive to Selangor.

Anything I should be aware with full overhauling engine? Any alternatives? Any recommendations?

Facemask without filters

I previously used Uniqlo Airism mask (the original design). Had about 6 and used 1 per day. Washed repeatedly for about a year until the inner filter material disintegrated.
Since then went back to using disposable surgical face masks.

Now looking to once again return to using a reusable face mask. However I wish to get something that doesn't have any layers or filtering. Something that can last like a T-shirt or pants. Something more for fashion than for protection. I acknowledge this is somewhat of a selfish act.

Any suggestions?

Motorcycle License, English, Penang

The only language I speak and understand fluently is English.

Is there a motorcycle driving school that gives lessons in English in Penang?

I have already taken and passed my car driving test a few years ago. Back then, communicated with instructor in Hokkien which I can communicate a bit in. I think it helped that I am kind of a car geek.

However with motorcycles, rather clueless and thus seeking to find English lessons.

Kancil Parts

Any recommendations on places/shops/breakers/scrapyard/how I can get a variety of different parts for Kancil. I'm living in Penang.

backstory. I bought a Kancil and I did a terrible job at inspecting it. Ended up with a car with many many problems. Now seriously curious on how much more money I would need to spend to fix the remaining non-critical problems to understand if there is a possibility that one day, I can sell the car without losing so much money compared to if I sell the car off in the current state.

Bonus if knowledgeable on tertiary education during the pandemic (online classes, online exams, limited social interaction, e.g.) and computers (e.g. digital note taking).

Not guidance on what course to take but rather guidance on attending classes, revision, ethics, etc.

I am currently seeking counsellor available in my university but not completely satisfied.

Willing to pay, alright with both online or in-person sessions (Penang).

Shopee seller problem

I am from Penang. I wanted to buy cardboard boxes recently. Could not find a physical shop within my district (North-East Penang Island District) so went onto Shopee. Found a seller from the mainland that had good ratings and a variety of different sizes to chose from.

I decided that I wanted to buy 126 50x40x30cm boxes. When I went to checkout, Shopee gave me an error: "weight or size limit exceeded".

I went to the Shopee seller profile and there was a WhatsApp number listed. Contacted the seller through WhatsApp and after a few messages back and fourth including payment, I was informed that they "will send by tomorrow". This was on Sunday, 5 September 2021.

On the 6 September 2021, I was asked to provide my name, address and phone. I replied the seller with the information and did not get a reply. I had already provided my address in an earlier message but not my name and phone.

Also did not get a reply to my WhatsApp message asking for update that I sent on both the 7 September 2021 and 8 September 2021.

On 8 September 2021, I messaged the seller through Shopee chat feature. I asked if I could "get a date for when delivery can be done by?" and in reply the seller said "Yes sure boss". My follow up messages including a request for refund has not been replied too. I see the Shopee seller account active since sending my messages,

On 9 September 2021, I tried calling the phone number, did not pick up. Got my mother to call them with her phone (different phone number), also did not pick up.

Before conducting the transaction through WhatsApp, I understood the risks and am aware that I cannot file a dispute with Shopee since the transaction did not take place on their platform. The total I paid was about RM500. Can I conclude that I have lost RM500 or is there a possibility the cardboard boxes will one day show up in the coming weeks or something else?

I do not wish to reveal the Shopee seller name yet.

From childhood, my father's past business and potentially from my deceased grandparents, I have a lot of items I would like to pass on to somebody else.

I am aware of 2 different ways that these items can be passed onto somebody else.

1) I can drop of the item at a thrift store

2) I can sell the items on an online marketplace like Carousell and Mudah.

I prefer to not use a thrift store because I do wish to get some revenue from the items. For online marketplace, I tried it out for a few months in the beginning of this year. I was asking only RM1 for many of items and was a relative success. However it was too much work and chaotic. Became unmanageable by myself which led to too many problems.

I am wondering: Is there a business or people in Penang that can come to my house and buy all my items of various categories from me in exchange for a small amount of money?

To clarify, I am not looking to recycle the items. I know of places that will buy paper , plastic , metal from me in exchange of money.

I have a car that has not been used since December 2020. Last time put petrol in the tank from a petrol station was in November or December 2020.

Can I drain the tank and put the petrol in a different car? (I do know how to drain petrol tank)

Or is it not recommended due to petrol shelf life / expiry date? If this is true, then where can I dispose of the petrol safely?

Used Upgrade Recommendation

I currently own a Olympus Stylus SH-50 (has 1/2.3" sensor) and a Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite. Previously owned a Canon PowerShot S100.

I prioritize simplicity. Turn on and shoot. Leave everything in auto. Sometimes will manually select white balance.

My lack of understanding of lens discourages me from indulging into using a camera with interchangeable lens.

I take both photos and videos.

Specifically for photos, I am looking for more pop like what I previously was able to obtain with my S100.

Then for videos, I am looking for the ability to film videos natively in 4k and film videos in low light situations.

What I wish for is a Olympus large sensor point and shoot with their 5 axis stabilization. However this does not exist. Optical stabilization is very important to me as I like to walk and film. My Canon PowerShot S100 had OIS but it was not strong enough. However many years has past since the S100 was launched. Not sure if non-Olympus models from recent years has optical stabilization that is good enough to allow walk and filming.

I see 3 possible upgrade paths.

1) Used iPhone, for example: iPhone 8

2) Used large sensor point and shoot, for example: Panasonic Lumix LX10/LX100, Sony RX100, Canon G7X

3) Used micro four thirds, for example: Panasonic Lumix GF9, Olympus OM-D E-M10

Prefer to spend as little as possible … but maximum budget for me is RM1500.

Looking for upgrade recommendations.
