A 1997 study on mouse has found that neonatal BPA exposure of 2 μg/kg increased adult prostate weight.[56] A 2005 study on mouse has found that neonatal BPA exposure at 10 μg/kg disrupted the development of the fetal mouse prostate.[57] A 2006 study rats has shown that neonatal bisphenol A exposure at 10 μg/kg levels increases prostate gland susceptibility to adult-onset precancerous lesions and hormonal carcinogenesis.[58] A 2007 in vitro study has found that BPA within the range of concentrations currently measured in human serum is associated with permanently increase in prostate size.[59] A 2009 study has found that newborns rats exposed to a low-dose of BPA (10 µg/kg) increased prostate cancer susceptibility when adults.

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday decided to drop the widely used West Texas Intermediate oil contract as the benchmark for pricing its oil, dealing a serious blow to the New York Mercantile Exchange. The move by the world’s biggest oil exporter could encourage other producers to abandon the benchmark and threaten the dominance of the most heavily-traded oil futures contract. Riyadh’s decision follows the divergence of the WTI benchmark from the global oil market this year.

Curry spice 'kills cancer cells'

An extract found in the bright yellow curry spice turmeric can kill off cancer cells, scientists have shown.

The chemical - curcumin - has long been thought to have healing powers and is already being tested as a treatment for arthritis and even dementia.

Now tests by a team at the Cork Cancer Research Centre show it can destroy gullet cancer cells in the lab.

Cancer experts said the findings in the British Journal of Cancer could help doctors find new treatments.

Dr Sharon McKenna and her team found that curcumin started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours.

'Natural' remedy

The cells also began to digest themselves, after the curcumin triggered lethal cell death signals.

Dr McKenna said: "Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value."

Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, said: "This is interesting research which opens up the possibility that natural chemicals found in turmeric could be developed into new treatments for oesophageal cancer.

"Rates of oesophageal cancer have gone up by more than a half since the 70s and this is thought to be linked to rising rates of obesity, alcohol intake and reflux disease so finding ways to prevent this disease is important too."

Each year around 7,800 people are diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in the UK. It is the sixth most common cause of cancer death and accounts for around five percent of all UK cancer deaths.

Fiery 'meteor' creates 50-foot crater in Latvian countryside

Locals were stunned when a fiery object fell from the sky and created a large crater near a small town in northern Latvia yesterday.

According to media reports, the object – thought to be a meteorite – fell near a residential house on the outskirts of Mazsalaca town in the Valmiera leaving a burning trace behind.

It created a hole which measured 15 metres (50 feet) wide and 5 metres (16 feet) deep in a meadow next to a farm in northern Latvia.

A witness who saw the incident is said to have described the 'meteorite' as making a noise similar to the one of an aircraft flying at a low altitude.

A spokesperson for the Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service said that a military chemical unit has tested the object and found that radiation levels are normal.

My friend brought his GF to a restaurant...He told me dinner there for 2 would cost about $100...but that day got 20% promotion...so he bought her there...

NHS Trust suspends cervical cancer vaccinations after girl, 14, dies within hours of jab

An NHS trust today suspended all cervical cancer vaccinations after a 14-year-old girl died hours after being given the vaccine.

Natalie Morton, who attended the Blue Coat Church of England School in Coventry, died in hospital after receiving the Cervarix jab.

Coventry Primary Care Trust today said it had halted vaccinations for two days while an investigation into Natalie's death is carried out.

The Department of Health has refused to say whether it would still allow tens of thousands of girls across the country to receive the jab in the months ahead.

But there were calls for the entire cervical cancer vaccination programme to be suspended amid fears parents would now boycott it in the wake of Natalie's death.

CMP: It's got one of the biggest central peaks a_ound. It's a very unusual crater. But there are some dark areas in it that Farouk has gone on record as saying they are dikes.
