Hi, I'm based in JB. Recently, my smart tv was struck by lightning and I bought a new Google tv online.

I tried many many times to configure the new tv using my existing outdoor antenna and also a new indoor HDTV antenna, but I can only receive Malaysia channels. I even tried the manual rf channel scan.

Does anyone have any idea how to receive SG channels with this tv?

Thanks!

Hi,

I have an American Tourister luggage, but I accidentally locked it and I can't remember the combination.

Any way of unlocking without breaking it? Is there anywhere that can do it? I'm based in Johor Bahru.

Thanks!

Hi,

I've been searching for a shop that repairs luggage wheels but can't seem to find any.. The next available option seems to be Singapore only. But given the high exchange rate, don't think it's realistic..

Does anyone here know where can I find a shop here? Or is it easy to buy the wheel and replace myself? If so, where can I get the wheels for Barry Smith luggage?

Thanks!

Touch up paint on wall

I had the house painted about a month ago (done by contractors). After the house was painted, I had cabinets installed and there were some spots covered by white silicon. I decided to paint them myself. The said wall was painted in dark brown. All was well.

Then last week, I noticed some small hairline cracks and also white spots. I took the same paint (from the same can) and painted the same way I did previously. However, the spots that I painted had a lighter shade and the patches are very obvious.

Anyone know why and how to resolve it?

Thanks!

Renovation completed - JB

Hi,

First of all, I would like to thanked everyone here who gave me advise when I was totally clueless on where to start.

I started planning 6 months before I started my renovations works in mid-October. What was supposed to be a simple work (change front and back door) became something more major when I discovered my bathroom was leaking too. It doesn't help that through my conversations with friends and after contacting some contractors, I felt that some contractors are not keen to take up small jobs and that the pricing is higher compare to KL. This is the peril of living in JB; due to the proximity to Singapore.

I got one contractor to do the main works (wetworks, piping, wiring and painting), one for metal works (gate, stainless steel door & window grilles) and one more for carpentry works.

Basically, for the main contractors, works are ok but there were a delay of about 1 month. He basically worked 2 weeks and stop for another 2 weeks. When I called, his workers came for a day or two before stopping work again. My guess is that he has may projects on hand, given that it is year end and everyone is rushing for Chinese New Year. He however, did not press me for payment (I was the one chasing him for the bills as there were some works that I had added on, before confirming the fees. My bad.. haha). Generally his tiling works are ok (done by a Chinese 'head') and his worker cleaned the place every time he finishes for the day (I was staying inside the house throughout the renovation period). The wiring works a bit slipshod but still acceptable (I had to tell them to rectify some areas here and there). The Indon workers were good at cementing work only, as they never clean up the place (after drilling for example) unless someone told them too. Also, his drilling skills are so bad, some of my tiles were cracked when he was installing the bathroom accessories. Not sure if the tiles I bought are not too good quality though. But overall, I'm satisfied with his work as I pay for what I get. His price is not the highest amongst the 3 quotes I gotten.

For the metal works, the contractor is my friend's hubby, so the price he given me was slightly lower and I'm also satisfied with his work.

As for the carpentry works, I was surprised at his price. My friend engaged his services first and when I saw their quote, I thought it was quite cheap. However, as it was year-end when I called him for a quote, he seems busy and only gave me an informal quotation (picture with price and send to me via whatsapp), which I have no problem at all. He was very fast (although he collects money upfront) and rushed out my stuff for me. Quality wise, I would have to say it again - You get what you paid for. A bit rough, but I'm happy. If you ask me about the wood quality, I would say I don't know, but as far as I know, everyone is using laminate now. Unless you use good quality wood, then I guess it's about the same. I did kitchen cabinet, display cabinet under staircase, shoe cabinet, tv cabinet (I won't call it a console as it's really a cabinet with drawers.. haha), dressing table with full length mirror, bathroom cabinet with mirror and another cabinet under the window in the bedroom... all for around RM11k.

All in all, quite satisfied with work done albeit had to put up with the dust for nearly 3 months!

Renovation completed

Hi All,

Need some advise here.

I live in a terrace house. I started the renovations work in mid-October. The hacking works (bathroom tiles, kitchen concrete table top & tiles and removal of front door) ended by end October. Thereafter it was the usual tiling works, painting, drilling (for bathroom and kitchen accessories, window grilles, etc) and carpentry works. All work ended recently.

My neighbour complained to me that due to my hacking works, her bathroom/bedroom is leaking (her bathroom is next to mine). She claims that when the neighbour at her other side started renovating, the same area was leaking and their contractor came to patch things up (I never verify this with the other neighbour).

My question is, how is it possible my contractor caused the leaking? The workers never went up to the roof, except for painting the exterior of the house. Secondly, the hacking works ended in October/November and now it starts to leak?

And the funniest thing was, before I started my renovation, I asked them if their bathroom was leaking, as the wall below my bathroom was wet and mouldy. I didn't use my bathroom for 2 weeks to see if it was my side that was leaking, but after the 2 weeks, the wall was still wet. After they told me there was no leak, I decided to hack the whole bathroom and redo the water proofing. And now they are claiming I caused the leak after they did the repair works?

Can I just ignore them coz my contractor just laughed when I told him that? hahaha..

LED lightings

Hi,

I recently changed all my ceiling lights from normal circular bulb to LED round ceiling lights when I was renovating my house.

I have used those normal bulb lights for 15 years with no issues (I didn't have to change the bulb even once). However, with the LED lights, sometimes it flickers. Is this normal? My contractor also changed my normal plastic DB box (to add in few more switches). Could this cause the problem too?

Thanks!

L Shape Shower Curtain Rod with Ceiling Support

I have been searching high and low for a L shaped shower curtain rod with ceiling support but can't find it. I even called some big time hardware shops in Singapore and they don't have it. Apparently only IKEA has it, but it does not have ceiling support. From my past experience, without the support, the rod will sag after few months

I got one at Ginmit but my contractor does not know how to fix it! Apparently will need to bend and saw (instructions in some foreign language, so we can only guess by looking at the photos)

Anyone can advise where to to buy in JB?

Thanks!

White stains on tiled wall/floor after renovation

Hi,

There are white stains on my tiled walls and floors after the renovation. I believe it's cement residue?

I tried washing them off with soap water, but it still there after drying. I hear acid wash will do the trick, but I prefer not to, in case it spoils my tiles colour. Can anyone suggest how to remove those stains?

Also, some of the walls have power socket. If I use normal plastic and stick over those sockets with cello tape, will the water seep into the sockets when I pour water over it?

Thanks!

Aluminium Door VS Wooden Door

Hi,

My existing bedroom and bathroom doors are normal wooden door (plywood, if I'm not mistaken. Original from developer).

Am thinking of changing them to aluminium doors. For this, they only need to dismantle the doors or need to remove the existing door frame too?

My main concern is :
1) Cost
2) Durability
3) Ease of installation (no hacking if possible)

Can't decide if aluminium (either folding or swing type) or wooden door is better. Any feedback are welcomed.

Thanks!

Hi,

My current grilles are just normal painted grilles. Most of it are still in good condition, except for some small parts where the paint came off and are rusty.

I'm just wondering if the cost of replacing new grilles are almost the same as dismantling the existing grille, send it to repaint with powder coating (is it even possible?) and then re-installing them?

Anyone has any contacts for the 2nd options (repainting) in JB area?

Thanks!

When I moved in, I have already changed the original DB box to a new one as my then-contractor told me the box supplied by the developer are low end ones. That was 15 years ago.

Now, I want to install autogate wiring and a new switch for my electrical hob. Maybe a few more power points here and there (not more than 5). Do I need to change to a new DB box? I live in a double storey house, and there are 2 boxes (one each on ground and first floors).

Any idea how much a DB box cost (with installation)? I saw some quote, nearly RM4k! Is it really that expensive (I live in JB, btw)?

Hi,

I'm shopping for electric stove, and currently narrow it down to Senz or Kitch. Actually both belongs to the same company. The dealer told me Senz cater to mid to high end clientele whereas Kitch is for lower end. He said Senz quality is better and easier to get spare parts in case it breaks down. The price difference is about RM1k.

As my renovation is bursting my budget, I'm tempted to take Kitch.

Any comments? When I went to ask at a supplier (not advertised in FB), I quoted RM500++ pfr! So much difference! Anyone has any idea what's the average price for alluminium kitchen cabinet?

Also, is alluminium the 'in' thing now? I remember it used to be melamine board, and my friends' cabinets are still working fine (more than 10 years already). Are there any cheaper options other than alluminium?
Hi,

Anyone got any recommendations for a good contractor in JB? In a tight budget.. need to to the following:

1) Change the plaster ceiling at carporch to aluminium/composite wood
2) Autogate - wiring, motor and gate (likes the mesh-like gate)
3) Change front door to security door
4) Change the sliding door to half brick and the top to "glass wall". Basically, I saw some rectangular glass brick in the internet and quite like the look. Didn't see it in JB though, as most as square glass brick. I want the glass wall so that the living room will have some natural light
5) Cabinet for space under staircase
6) Kitchen - there is an existing concrete table top only, but will need to redo as will be extending the table top to L shape and change gas stove to electric. Wanted concrete only for table top, but was told it's not practical. Will need to install kitchen cabinets. Will be changing all wall (1/2 wall) and floor tiles.
7) Masterbedroom bathroom to change wall and floor tiles.
8) Some wiring work, including changing all switches.
9) Painting - interior and exterior. Was told that the cement-look walls for exterior is not practical as it will crack. Painting the walls will act as a protection. Any comments on this?

Thanks!
