Can manual connect but cannot auto connect

My friend laptop is using wired connection in her university hostel. She can connect manually by inputing the ip by herself. But when she try to change to obtain ip address automatically, then it becomes limited or no connectivity.
The problem with manual is that she does not know which ip is not used and she is afraid got conflict. How to make it auto connect? THX
