Oil prices plunged Wednesday after President Donald Trump agreed to suspend attacks on Iran for two weeks in exchange for Tehran allowing safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate
futures with May delivery fell 15.7% to $95.17 per barrel by 5:17 a.m. ET. International benchmark Brent crude
futures with June delivery, meanwhile, lost more than 13.6% to $94.38 per barrel.

The WTI could log its worst daily performance since April 27, 2020 if it settles more than 14.52% lower.

Trump said the two-week ceasefire was subject to Iran agreeing to a complete, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. has received a 10-point proposal from Iran that is a workable basis for negotiations, he said.

“Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated,” Trump said in a social media post.

President Trump ordered strikes on sites inside Venezuela, including military facilities, U.S. officials told CBS News, as the administration early Saturday ratcheted up its campaign against the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The strikes follow months of U.S. military buildup in the region, with the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and numerous other warships positioned in the Caribbean.
In recent weeks the U.S. has seized two oil tankers off Venezuela, launched deadly strikes on more than 30 boats the administration says were carrying drugs, and struck what President Trump called "the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs."
The Trump administration has accused Maduro of drug trafficking and working with gangs designated as terrorist organizations, which Maduro denies. On Christmas Eve, Mr. Trump declined to say what his goal was, but cautioned that if Maduro "plays tough, it'll be the last time he'll ever be able to play tough."
Maduro said this week he is open to talks with the U.S. on drug trafficking, oil and migration issues "wherever they want to whenever they want."

As with many heads of state, Xi Jinping preferred to be chauffeured in his own presidential car for his recent meeting with Joe Biden. His armored limo didn't go unnoticed as the POTUS jumped at the opportunity to check out the stretched Hongqi. If the name doesn't ring a bell, it’s a sub-brand of the FAW Car Company, which itself is a subsidiary of the state-owned FAW Group.

The stately luxobarge is loosely based on the retro-styled L5, known for being the most expensive car to come out of China. At the end of their meeting, Joe Biden admired Xi's extra-long sedan, calling it a "beautiful vehicle." He was then invited to have a quick look inside at what we assume is a lavish cabin fit for the president of one of the world's most powerful countries.

Biden went on to say the Hongqi L5 is like his very own Cadillac, known as "The Beast." Given how important these two cars are, most details are shrouded in mystery. It is believed the POTUS' car is built on the heavy-duty GMC TopKick truck platform and is powered by a Duramax diesel. Xi's presidential car is reportedly an elongated L5 with a massive turbocharged 6.0-liter V12.

Given the amount of armor fitted to both cars, The Beast and the L5 (codenamed N701) probably weigh as much as the moon. The Caddy is said to tip the scales at anywhere between 15,000 to 20,000 pounds, so we'd reckon fuel economy is not ideal, even with that diesel engine. The Hongqi is by no means a Miata either considering the donor car already weighs roughly 7,000 pounds. Mind you, that's before adding all the heavy armor.

The US House approves SANCTION on Hamas Supporters

The House on Wednesday night passed bipartisan legislation imposing new sanctions on Iran and other Hamas supporters.

That bill, along with other legislation the House passed Wednesday, is designed to show further U.S. support for its longtime ally Israel and to strengthen foreign policy efforts to counter terrorist activities and funding of Hamas and other adversarial groups in the region.

The headline bill would impose sanctions on foreign states and persons who knowingly provide significant material or financial support for Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad or other Palestinian terrorist organizations. The House passed that measure 363-46.

"This bill takes aim at Iran's support for Hamas and makes it clear that banks cannot facilitate the toxic relationship between the largest state sponsor of terror and its proxies," Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul, the lead sponsor, said during floor debate.

Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Ill, said the sanctions legislation "will provide more tools for this and future administrations to hold Hamas accountable for its terrorism and brutality."

The US House of Representatives approved a bill to sanction foreign supporters of the Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist movements on Wednesday night.

The bill, titled the Hamas International Financing Prevention Act, passed 363-46. Some 45 Democrats and one Republican voted in opposition of the bill. First introduced in the House in January, it will now head to the Senate.

The bill would require the president to periodically report to Congress a list of each foreign person who knowingly provides “significant support or services” to a senior member or supporter of Hamas or the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The president would also be required to provide Congress with a list of any foreign governments that have repeatedly provided material support for the terrorist groups’ activities. These governments will be barred from receiving US assistance or the exports of controlled munitions for one year. International financial institutions will also be instructed to oppose providing assistance to these governments for a year.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 ― The government is currently monitoring the decision of the United States House of Representatives to pass a Bill regarding restrictions on foreign entities that support Hamas and the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine yesterday.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir said the ministry will thoroughly examine the content of the Bill before taking further actions.

“The situation in Palestine has worsened and as of today the death toll reported is over 8,700 people and this is highly disappointing. Moreover, the number of people who have lost their homes or are displaced has reached 14 million individuals in total and this is extremely saddening.

“On one side, continuous bombing are taking place, and on the other side they are not pursuing the best path to resolve the issue. Instead, they are further complicating the situation, making it difficult to achieve a positive outcome that would allow us to immediately halt these attacks and facilitate the entry if humanitarian assistance,” he said.

He told this to reporters after attending the Diploma in Diplomacy graduation ceremony at the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations here yesterday.

He said the first shipment of humanitarian aid for the Palestinians in Gaza is to be sent to Al-Arish International Airport, Egypt via a special chartered cargo flight tomorrow.

"We thank the Egyptian authorities because in a short time, they allowed help from Malaysia to arrive. Normally for other countries to reach Al-Arish airport it takes days, approximately five or six days but in the context of Malaysia, we get the response in just 36 hours.

"This allows us to make preparations for delivery to the airport, from there the Egyptian authorities will take follow-up actions to deliver goods to Rafah," he said.

Zambry added that Wisma Putra is also trying its best to get a Malaysian, Nurul Ain Haron and her husband who have been in Gaza since October 1 out with the cooperation of a third country.

"We have also received feedback about the possibility that the route in Rafah will be opened to allow people from abroad and those who have dual nationality to leave," he said. ― Bernama

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah hari ini mengingatkan rakyat bahawa kelonggaran daripada Pelan Pemulihan Negara (PPN) yang dinikmati kini boleh hilang sekali lagi jika mereka berterusan lalai.

Seri Paduka bertitah semua pihak mengambil iktibar daripada pelbagai ujian sebelum ini selain terus memainkan peranan sehingga negara bebas sepenuhnya daripada wabak Covid-19.

Al Sultan Abdullah dalam pada itu turut menasihati rakyat agar terus bersabar, menjaga kesihatan diri dan mematuhi peraturan yang ditetapkan kerajaan dalam usaha mengekang penularan pandemik itu.

"Beta percaya, setiap badai yang melanda akan berhenti jua, yang gelap pasti akan menjadi terang dan yang kelam akan kembali bercahaya," titah Al-Sultan Abdullah pada Istiadat Sambutan Ulang Tahun Hari Keputeraan Rasmi Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tahun 2021 di Istana Negara di Kuala Lumpur, hari ini.

Turut berangkat Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.

Pada istiadat itu, seramai 44 individu menerima Darjah Kebesaran, Bintang dan Pingat Persekutuan Tahun 2021 hari ini sempena Hari Keputeraan Rasmi Yang di-Pertuan Agong yang disambut 7 Jun lepas, namun tiada istidat sambutan diadakan berikutan penularan Covid-19.

Mengenai sambutan hari ini, Seri Paduka bertitah ia dirancang untuk berlangsung pada Julai, namun tidak dapat dilaksanakan berikutan keadaan pandemik Covid-19 yang belum reda.

"Alhamdulillah, situasi pandemik Covid-19 di negara kini semakin bertambah baik, negara mula beransur meniti ke fasa terakhir PPN yang memberi pelbagai kelonggaran kepada rakyat beta," titah Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

PPN yang merangkumi empat fasa diumumkan pada 15 Jun lepas oleh Perdana Menteri ketika itu Muhyiddin Yassin.

BN akhirnya meletakkan noktah kepada teka-teki tentang kemungkinan kerjasama dengan parti-parti lain dalam pilihan raya negeri (PRN) Melaka yang akan datang.

Timbalan Presiden Umno, Mohamad Hasan memaklumkan bahawa BN akan bertanding secara solo dan menggunakan logo sendiri, serta tidak akan bekerjasama dengan mana-mana parti lain dalam PRN yang dijadualkan pada 20 November itu.

“BN pergi bersendirian.

“Saya ulang sekali lagi, tidak ada lagi soal jawab sama ada nak bersama dengan siapa-siapa,” katanya dalam sidang media pengumuman calon-calon BN yang turut disiarkan dalam talian.

Dalam sidang media itu, Mohamad mengumumkan yang Umno akan menurunkan 20 calon, MCA tujuh dan MIC akan satu kerusi, untuk bertanding di kesemua 29 kerusi DUN Melaka.

Ford wakes up badly burnt from its India dream

NEW DELHI (Sept 17): When Ford Motor Co built its first factory in India in the mid-1990s, U.S. carmakers believed they were buying into a boom - the next China.

The economy had been liberalised in 1991, the government was welcoming investors, and the middle class was expected to fuel a consumption frenzy. Rising disposable income would help foreign carmakers to a market share of as much as 10%, forecasters said.

It never happened.

Last week, Ford took a $2 billion hit to stop making cars in India, following compatriots General Motors Co and Harley-Davidson Inc in closing factories in the country.

Among foreigners that remain, Japan's Nissan Motor Co Ltd and even Germany's Volkswagen AG - the world's biggest automaker by sales - each hold less than 1% of a car market once forecast to be the third-largest by 2020, after China and the United States, with annual sales of 5 million.

Instead, sales have stagnated at about 3 million cars. The growth rate has slowed to 3.6% in the last decade versus 12% a decade earlier.

Ford's retreat marks the end of an Indian dream for U.S. carmakers. It also follows its exit from Brazil announced in January, reflecting an industry pivot from emerging markets to what is now widely seen as make-or-break investment in electric vehicles.

Analysts and executives said foreigners badly misjudged India's potential and underestimated the complexities of operating in a vast country that rewards domestic procurement.

Many failed to adapt to a preference for small, cheap, fuel-efficient cars that could bump over uneven roads without needing expensive repairs. In India, 95% of cars are priced below $20,000.

Lower tax on small cars also made it harder for makers of larger cars for Western markets to compete with small-car specialists such as Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp - controlling shareholder of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, India's biggest carmaker by sales.

Of foreign carmakers that invested alone in India over the past 25 years, analysts said only South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co stands out as a success, mainly due to its wide portfolio of small cars and a grasp of what Indian buyers want.

"Companies invested on the fallacy that India would have great potential and the purchasing power of buyers would go up, but the government failed to create that kind of environment and infrastructure," said Ravi Bhatia, president for India at JATO Dynamics, a provider of market data for the auto industry.

EARLY MISSTEP
Some of Ford's missteps can be traced to when it drove into India in the mid-1990s alongside Hyundai. Whereas Hyundai entered with the small, affordable "Santro", Ford offered the "Escort" saloon, first launched in Europe in the 1960s.

The Escort's price shocked Indians used to Maruti Suzuki's more affordable prices, said former Ford India executive Vinay Piparsania.

Ford's narrow product range also made it hard to capitalise on the appeal won by its best-selling EcoSport and Endeavour sport utility vehicles (SUVs), said analyst Ammar Master at LMC.

The carmaker said it had considered bringing more models to India but determined it could not do so profitably.

"The struggle for many global brands has always been meeting India's price point because they brought global products that were developed for mature markets at a high-cost structure," said Master.

A peculiarity of the Indian market came in mid-2000 with a lower tax rate for cars measuring less than 4 metres (13.12 ft) in length. That left Ford and rivals building India-specific sub-4 metre saloons for which sales ultimately disappointed.

"U.S. manufacturers with large truck DNAs struggled to create a good and profitable small vehicle. Nobody got the product quite right and losses piled up," said JATO's Bhatia.

RISE AND FALL
Ford had excess capacity at its first India plant when it invested $1 billion on a second in 2015. It had planned to make India an export base and raise its share of a market projected to hit 7 million cars a year by 2020 and 9 million by 2025.

But the sales never followed and overall market growth stalled. Ford now utilises only about 20% of its combined annual capacity of 440,000 cars.

To use its excess capacity, Ford planned to build compact cars in India for emerging markets but shelved plans in 2016 amid a global consumer preference shift to SUVs.

It changed its cost structure in 2018 and the following year started work on a joint venture with local peer Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd designed to reduce costs. Three years later, in December, the partners abandoned the idea.

After sinking $2.5 billion in India since entry and burning another $2 billion over the past decade alone, Ford decided not to invest more.

"To continue investing ... we needed to show a path for a reasonable return on investment," Ford India head Anurag Mehrotra told reporters last week.

"Unfortunately, we are not able to do that."

A Netflix documentary focussing on the life and career of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher has been released.

Entitled SCHUMACHER, the film features contributions from his wife Corinna, his children Gina and Mick, and his brother Ralf.

Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm describes the film as the “family's gift to their beloved husband and father.”

It also features insights from many F1 personalities who either played a role in Schumacher’s career or who were his direct rivals, including Jean Todt, Bernie Ecclestone, Luca di Montezemolo, Flavio Briatore, Sebastian Vettel, Mika Hakkinen, Damon Hill and David Coulthard.

“Michael Schumacher has redefined the professional image of a racing driver and has set new standards,” said Kehm.

“In his quest for perfection, he spared neither himself nor his team, driving them to the greatest successes. He is admired all over the world for his leadership qualities. He found the strength for this task and the balance to recharge at home, with his family, whom he loves idolatrously.

“In order to preserve his private sphere as a source of strength, he has always rigorously and consistently separated his private from his public life. This film tells of both worlds. It is his family's gift to their beloved husband and father.”

The film has been produced by Germany company B|14 FILM GmbH, and is directed by Hanns-Bruno Kammertons, Vanessa Nocker and Michael Wech. The same team was responsible for a 2017 documentary about tennis legend Boris Becker, called Der Spieler.

“The greatest challenge for the directors was certainly to find the balance between independent reporting and consideration for the family,” said Nocker. “Corinna Schumacher herself was our greatest support in this.

“She herself wanted to make an authentic film, to show Michael as he is, with all his ups and downs, without any sugarcoating. She was great and brave enough to let us do what we wanted, and so we respected and kept her boundaries. A very inspiring, warm woman who made a lasting impression on all of us.”

Producer Benjamin Seikel added: “The documentary was a big challenge and needed a lot of time and sensitivity, considering the pressure that was put on the production from the outside. But thanks to a great team and a really great collaboration with the family, we didn't let ourselves get rattled.

“We're grateful that it's finally getting underway and excited about its global release on Netflix. The film was always intended to be an international documentary and we're confident it will be embraced as such.”
