Hi guys,

I'm looking for books or websites that will be able to teach me Windows Powershell. I hold my own with bash scripting but I'm not sure if that will help in understanding Powershell.

So please give me your recommendations. Thank you.

Real Life Japanese Mech

The Kuratas Mecha robot is an art/aspirational nerd project by Suidobashi Heavy Industry. This full-sized Mech robot features a ride-in cockpit, “rocket” launchers, and a “smile controlled” BB Gatling gun. That’s right: when you smile, this thing unleashes thousands of tiny plastic BBs.

Unveiled at Wonder Fest 2012 in Tokyo, you can control the robot with either a set of master-slave joysticks or using a more fluid Kinect interface. It runs something called the V-SIDO (Bushido) OS and includes touchscreen support inside the cockpit as well as 3G wireless connectivity so you can control it via phone.

You can “price out” your own Mech here but rest-assured you won’t be able to drive one of these off the lot any time soon. It’s a one-off project and, as cool as it is, it only moves at about 10KM per hour.

There are some who are suggesting this is CG but considering the AFP/Getty picked up some photos of it, it looks about as real as you can get.

Sos wif video

Ok guys, I'm stumped. Yesterday I started building a new firewall/proxy and it was all coming along just fine. But then stupid Libclamav can't run and so I can't plug it into Dansguardian.

Any ideas?
Local Web Server

I have small problem with a test machine.

I installed Apache2 on a debian system because I'm trying to build a web front-end to a service. The service is also located on the same machine. Now that I'm done testing (it sucks and doesn't work well enough), I have been trying to remove the webserver component but so far unsuccessful.

Everything I've tried still shows the basic index.html. Pointed it to 127.0.0.1, http://localhost, <ip-address> all show that my webserver is still running. I'm totally stumped.

Basically, how do I stop my webserver?

Snow will feature prominently, affecting movement and forming cover.

Game Informer got in touch with publisher THQ, which said it would share more details soon. You know, probably after the cover makes it to stands.

Source : Joystiq
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CoH2 is almost here.

Hi guys,

I've been boxing at Alex's for the last 3-4 months but I sprained my ankle earlier in the week. The lack of activity is starting to get to me. I need some advice on what I can do with my ankle busted. Its a slight sprain and should be healed up by next week. I just don't wanna worse it.

Any exercise which will give me a good cardio workout or make me feel less like a blob?

Embedded Device

Hi guys,

I recently got my hands on an embedded x86 architecture CPU. Specs are as follows :-

5" touchscreen LCD (attached)

1GB flash drive (IDE connector)

Gigabit wired network card

Proc unknown due to lack of experimentation

Unknown board

512mb DDR1 RAM

No USB port but I have connector to connect a USB keyboard to its motherboard

Runs on 12V DC

Its currently got TinyXP installed on it (wasn't done by me). I'm looking for a really light distro to work it. It will need touchscreen support from the get go. I'm planning to remove the drive and install Linux into it then reconnect the hard drive.

So, what distros will be able to fit the bill? Also, got any suggestions on what to do with it once I'm done with it? I'm willing to post some photos of it to get ideas.

Ok guys, I've decided that enough is enough and my ubuntu login is broken. I can't even get to my login screen. The background just appears and then nothing happens. The mouse, sound, everything is working but nothing is showing (except for the background).

So, I guess im going to uninstall GDM and go with scrot. Or maybe icewm. Stupid ubuntu updates. Broke my laptop.

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a place where I can print PDF e-books for a decent price. Usually the charges are RM1 per page but my e-books are something like 400-600 pages.

I'm looking for a place where I can get it printed cheaply. Any ideas?

Choose project for me

Hi guys,

I'm kinda torn between personal projects right now. I really can't decide which I should do. So I'm gonna enlist your help.

The hardware
1st, the hardware. I have Debian Etch installed on :-

AMD Athlon 2800+ (clawhammer)

1GB DDR1

80GB PATA drive

MSI mobo (can't remember model) but it is survivor of 6 lightning strikes, yes 6

The network setup is currently Win7 Desktop and Debian are connected to simple home user switch. Switch is then connected to modem/router. The modem/router is also connected to my caseless HTPC (no money buy case yet).

I also have an Asus RT-N16 (unused) which I can use as an access point. Hardware-wise, I'm gold. Everything is available except the stupid case.

The projects
Why the MythTV backend? Well I have 2TB of "home-movies" But seriously, I have quite an extensive DVD and avi collection and its time to catalogue them. A MythTV backend will allow users of the HTPC to choose and watch movies via web browser. Plus its pretty impressive for the visitors.

Why captive portal? I'm very curious about how they operate and it will give me some valuable insight when pen-testing. Its just plain interesting to me.

The concerns
I'm not sure about the difficulty of establishing a captive portal. But I know MythTV is a little complicated when trying to import AVI into the database. I was hoping somebody could tell me which is more difficult. Also, will it be possible to run both on 1 machine?

Any sort of suggestions based on experience would be great. Thanks.

Unix Haters Handbook

I've recently read this book called "The Unix Haters Handbook". Published in 1994, it is quite old and yet rather informative for a newbie like me to the world of Linux.

It demonstrates certain issues which are still in existence today. And if you don't think it as informative, its pretty entertaining if nothing else.

You can find a copy here.

Whistling Sound

Hi guys,

I've got a strange problem which I couldn't find a solution. I recently purchased an Antec 550W PSU from Hong Kong (only 300+ ringgit). When I plugged it into my machine, it worked fine. However, after I shut down my PC a whistling noise will start about an hour later. Main power is still on but the PC is still shut down.

If I turn on the PC, the noise goes away immediately. There is no other sound except that whistling sound when PC is in powered down state. If I turn off the main power (or the power switch on the PSU), the whistling sound stops after about 10 mins.

Before switching to this PSU I didn't have this issue. Therefore I suspect the PSU but am still open to other suggestions.

Forwarding X11

Hi guys,

I'm trying to build a headless debian server (personal experiment). I've managed to get OpenSSH up and running and can putty (on my Win7) into the server.

Once putty-ed into the server I logged in and ran 'xeyes &' to start the X11 forwarding. However, I got an error message which was something like 'can't open display:10:0'.

At this point, Google has failed me or I just don't understand what they are trying to tell me to do.

On my Win7 machine, I have putty and XMing. However, I am using a multi-screen, multi GPU setup. I'm not sure if that makes things more complicated. In order to test if the Win7 system was the problem, I loaded putty on the Debian system and proceeded to putty into itself. In there, I tried load X11 again and the error displayed was 'can't open display:11:0'.

I'm out of ideas now. I'm not interested in using VNC or FreeNX because this is in my local area network and will not be open to public. Also, its a proof of concept (to myself) that the screen can be forwarded via SSH.

Help? Please?

KVM over IP

Hi guys,

This seems like a network issue more than anything else. I'm contemplating using a KVM over IP switch for my home but I'm a little sceptical about its security.

I've done some looking around but I'm not sure how to interprete the data I've gotten. As such, does anybody have any opinions on the security of a KVM over IP switch?
