New traffic light at old klang road

I hope this is the correct subforum to post.

So I am not happy with the newly-functioning traffic light on old klang road towards mid valley direction. It is located slightly after Shell/Honda service centre and is apparently built for the convenience of 9 Seputeh residents.

Old klang road is a super high traffic area and without traffic light towards mid valley direction has been great in the past. However, even without traffic light the road is already jam enough during peak hours, let alone with a new traffic light like this.

I think the traffic light is unnecessary because:
- it worsen the traffic in old klang road
- the vehicles wishing to use that traffic light can have a u-turn in just 800 m (less than 1 min drive with 60km/h)

What say you, old klang road daily users?

Edit: what is the avenue to complain? If many people make the complain is there a possibility to abolish the traffic light?

Real world applications of Blockchain

We know that Blockchain is the underlying technology behind cryptocurrency. I have read many articles about how Blockchain will change the way we live the way the Internet changed our lives. But I do not know how and why. With limited knowledge of the technology, I open this thread to clear my doubt and to promote a healthy discussion.

Cryptocurrency has been a hype for the general public. All people have their own opinions (including positives and negatives) about the currency, with majority still being very skeptical at the time of writing (solely based on my personal experience when seeing other people's reaction to cryptocurrency). I used to be very skeptical too. But instead of continue to be skeptical and judging cryptocurrency as bubble or rubbish, I am open to learning new knowledge and started to read some information about Blockchain. I believe that if Blockchain has its value, so does cryptocurrency. And this will be the reason that cryptocurrency is here to stay, as everything goes back to the fundamentals, of how the technology affects and changes (improves) our daily lives.

Some application examples:
1. A Blockchain "application":
Some time last year I read about the creator of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin used Ethereum blockchain to disprove his death hoax. Lots of website just showed the following picture and then said he used the technology to disprove the rumour. I did not understand how.

Then I did some research into it, then I realised how. Because the block that he posted, 3930000 and the hash matches that on Ethereum blockchain. And because the block is created in real-time, it means that Vitalik is alive at the time the block is created, i.e., Jun-25-2017 11:09:41 PM +UTC. Vitalik couldn't have known the hash if he wrote the block and hash beforehand. That's how it works.

2. Korean Peach Declaration [added 20 May 2018]:
Another media report is about the Historic Korean Peach Declaration recorded on Ethereum Blockchain. This means that the blockchain will prove, forever, that this declaration did indeed happens at the specified time (Apr 28, 2018). The corresponding block can be found in both English (Block 5518813) and Korean (Block 5518813) version.

This is wow. My understanding is blockchain verify transactions and it basically verify that the declaration indeed happens at that time. That is the proof. And because blockchain is immutable and cannot be reversed, there is no way to delete the record of the transaction. Everyone knows that the declaration did happen.

3. Auction [added 18 June 2018]
Auction using blockchain - this article reports the application of Ethereum blockchain to bid auction. It says:

"The auction will be conducted on the Ethereum blockchain, and a smart contract will determine the final price for Warhol’s painting."

So I think the blockchain smart contract enables the process to process and determine the auction winners automatically.

[Update 17 Sep 2018]: It appears that the art has been sold using the blockchain technology, details can be found here where the news source dated 5 Sep 2018. I couldn't find the block number or transaction details on blockchain though, not sure why.

4. Chinese citizens bypass censorship by taking news to blockchain [added 17 Sep 2018]
In July 2018, it appears that mainland China has a news spreading among social media which was quickly censored, according to this news, which says:

"Chinese internet monitors deleted the story within hours and quickly removed any reposts. However, internet users figured out a way to share the story that will keep it permanently out of reach of these monitors: by adding it to a blockchain."

Because of this, someone took to the Ethereum blockchain to send him/herself a small amount of ether and posted the news on the metadata. The transaction is recorded in Block 6007493. As blockchain data is immutable and will be forever there, hence the chinese citizens has bypassed the censorship.

Main topic:

So today I read this article titled "Cryptocurrencies are here to stay" on Al-Jazeera. It says: "For instance, a car could be tracked from the production of its parts and where it was assembled, to the taxes, sales and any resales of the car."

Another application I saw is to track food from farm to fork. So if using Blockchain, then if a food is labelled "Product of New Zealand", then the customer can use Blockchain to track that it is really from New Zealand?

If the above is the real-world application of Blockchain, then it is beyond imagination that how disruptive this technology can be! Because in today's world, when we saw a product labelled "Product of New Zealand", there is no way to prove it. But if Blockchain can do this, then this is huge.

So my question is: how?

My understanding on the technology is limited, but I would be interested to know how. So I imagine that the food packaging would contains a block/hash so that the consumer can track the particular block on the blockchain, similar to the way Vitalik dismiss his death hoax. But then how to get the information that the food is from New Zealand?

Meditation

Saw this new subforum was created. I think it’s a good idea to open a thread to discuss about meditation. Western world tends to call it mindfulness, but yeah I don't really differentiate the two.

Meditation is a great way to reduce stress in our daily lives. I tried to practice daily but with the busy working life it is hard to be persistent. There are lots of different ways. The method I use is simple (but may not be easy), taught by a psychologist. I focus the attention on the breath as a start. Then I practiced the so-called 6 seconds cycle, i.e., 3 seconds in-breath and 3 seconds out-breath, that will make 10 breaths in a minute. If the mind wanders (which it will), try to bring the attention back to the breath. Continue doing this for at least 5 minutes, preferably longer.

Anybody has practice meditation regularly? Feel free to discuss here.

There was once a screening of “The Connection: Mind Your Body” when I was studying. The filmed is made by a journalist who was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, i.e., her immune system attacked her own body. She travelled around the world interviewing experts with remarkable stories of recovery from severe diseases. She found that there is a connection between mind and body (it has to be), that the mind will affects the body’s physical health and vice versa that the body will communicate with the mind. Therefore, if we are stressed continuously in our lives, chronic illnesses are likely to manifest.

The file uses a simple example that, e.g., when we encountered a tiger in a jungle, we activate the fight or flight response, which is associated with increased heart rate, blood pressure etc. If we are stressed, we are usually worrying what might happen in the future, as if there is a “virtual tiger” in our mind. When this happen for a long time, it produces adverse effect to our health, both mental and physical. Meditation, on the other hand, helps us to only focus on the present moment and let go of unnecessary thoughts. It activated what is called the relaxation response, which is associated with decreased heart rate, breathing rate etc.

Another point worth noting is that western medicine often treats mind and body to be separated. For example, when a patient has a prolonged back pain, then doctor would prescribe medicines for back pain. But sometimes this doesn’t help. Would it be possible that the daily stress in the mind causes it to manifest as back pain? This is something worth pondering.
