Khairy is best candidate to contest

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today hinted that Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin would be the best candidate contesting the party's presidency in its upcoming polls.

The Pakatan Harapan chairperson said Khairy was an eligible candidate for the post due to the fact that Umno was now deemed as a party in disarray and directionless in its struggle.

“I think the best candidate (for the post of) Umno president is Khairy Jamaluddin,” he told a press conference after chairing the Kedah Harapan council meeting at Seri Mentaloon in Alor Setar.

Also present was Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir.

On May 22, Umno acting president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that according to the party constitution and regulations, all top posts in Umno – including that of the president, deputy president, vice-presidents and wing chiefs – are open for contest in the next party election.

LETTER | The ninth of May was a historic moment when confident Malaysians decided to reject BN which had enjoyed uninterrupted rule for over 60 years and they voted in a loosely formed coalition of political parties called Pakatan Harapan.

Undeniably Dr Mahathir Mohamad was a factor but I would agree with Rafizi Ramli that Mahathir was not the main reason which caused BN to lose power. Anwar Ibrahim would have achieved similar results if he was not put away in prison. After all Anwar Ibrahim was instrumental in causing the BN to lose its two-thirds parliamentary majority in GE12 and maintained this record during GE13.

I believe that the main reason which caused BN’s downfall was their inability to offer any reasonable explanation on allegations of financial scandals and also rampant incidences of corruption including leakages which the people felt were being condoned. Cost of living and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) were merely aggravating factors which Harapan effectively capitalised on.

It was rather unfortunate that other than Muhyiddin Yassin and Mohd Shafie Apdal, who decided to raise questions, other members of the previous administration who probably thought that they were indispensable, decided to remain silent, condoning such practices.

Moving forward it is hoped that BN members of Parliament will provide a strong opposition to prevent future domination by Harapan. For democracy to flourish, a two-party political system must be achieved.

Since winning the general election, Harapan has been on a cleaning up mode reviewing key policies and mega-projects which appear to strain the country’s finances, zero-rating the GST seemingly to help ease the cost of living impact, initiating institutional reforms to strengthen key government institutions and also investigating former politicians for corrupt practices.

All these commendable efforts are being celebrated by many to the extent of donating to help pay for country’s alleged out of control debt situation. Embarrassingly, the government had legitimised it as Tabung Harapan, this after deciding to forgo over RM20 billion in GST revenue.

It is interesting to note that people who have overwhelmingly rejected the GST claiming it to be an unfair tax system are now willing to donate money to this specific fund purportedly to help the government pay debts. What is a better way to help the country’s finances if not by diligently paying taxes?

In order to effectively contribute towards nation-building, it would be worthwhile for us to look at ways to increase our own productivity levels so that the economy is able to record impressive sustainable growth. It is also important that we begin to celebrate our diversity and stop prejudicial behaviour against one another so that we can have better confidence and an improved living environment.

Let us all move away from being emotional and adopt a more pragmatic approach to achieve long-term desired results rather than rejoice over short-term plans.

Najib: Don’t plunder funds from Petronas

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has urged the Pakatan Harapan government not to plunder funds from Petronas for bailouts.

“I urge the new government to continue to give sufficient space and capital to Petronas to fulfil their vision and not to plunder funds from Petronas or through bailout missions as what was done during the 22 years of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s administration,” Najib said on his Facebook post yesterday.

Najib noted that the Pakatan government recently stated that the shortfall in revenue due to the abolishment of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would be made up by Petronas, Khazanah Nasional and Bank Negara Malaysia, who were asked to provide higher dividend payments to the Government.

However, Najib said this approach was not sustainable.

“Petronas’ profits depend on global oil and gas prices which are out of its control. Over-dependence on high oil prices should be avoided,” he added.

Najib also said that the cash reserves of Petronas had increased to RM164.7bil as at March 2018, an increase of RM36.5bil compared to RM128.2bil at the end of 2017.

He said the increase resulted from competitive oil prices and payments received from Aramco Saudi’s investment for the RAPID Pengerang project.

He pointed out that during his administration, he made sure that Petronas did not need to pay dividends beyond its means.

“This has resulted in the cash balance of Petronas increasing significantly and the company has been able to make investments and expand to implement ‘game changer’ projects such as the RAPID Pengerang project, Sarawak Oil and Gas Integration Project (SSIOGP) and the Sabah Ambon and Urea (Samur) project,” he said.

Najib added that Petronas was also given the freedom to make investments all over the world.
