WASHINGTON: Drew Weissman's decades of research helped pave the way for mRNA Covid-19 vaccines, but the scientist isn't resting on his laurels.

The University of Pennsylvania immunologist, who on Thursday shared the US$3 million 2022 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences with his longtime collaborator Katalin Kariko, is now spearheading efforts to design a new vaccine against all coronaviruses.

The Silicon Valley-backed award honors major discoveries with the highest cash amounts in science.

"There have been three (coronavirus) pandemics or epidemics in the past 20 years," Weissman told AFP in an interview, referring to the original SARS virus, MERS and Covid-19.

"You have to assume there's going to be more, and our idea was that we could wait for the next coronavirus epidemic or pandemic, and then spend a year and a half making a vaccine. Or we could make one now and have it either ready to go, or use it now."

The 62-year-old and his team started work on the project last spring and have so far published two papers, with promising results.

One of the vaccines was shown to prevent SARS and a few other animal coronaviruses that have the potential to cross into humans.

By now, many are familiar with the basic principles of mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) vaccines: they deliver genetic instructions to our cells to build the spike protein of the coronavirus, in order to evoke antibodies when our bodies encounter the real virus.

The new focus is to try to train our immune systems to parts of the virus that do not mutate as fast as the spike. These are called "conserved regions."

As a practicing doctor for most of his life, "my dream since starting college and medical school was to make something that helps people," Weissman said, adding it made him "incredibly happy" to see the vaccines he laid the groundwork for save lives.

But while he foresaw the issue of global vaccine inequality – and is working on a project with the Thai government to develop their own Covid-19 vaccine for this reason – he admitted to being astonished by the level of vaccine hesitancy seen in wealthy countries.

"The conservative anti-science, anti-government people completely surprised us. I just didn't expect that group to come out against vaccines," he said.

While mRNA technology is enjoying huge attention, Weissman remembers a time when the field was a scientific backwater.

"We started working together in 1998, and that was without much funding and without much in the way of publications," he said of his work with Kariko.

In 2005, they found a way to alter synthetic RNA to stop it from causing a massive inflammatory response found in animal experiments.

"Just before our paper was published I said 'Our phones are going to ring off the hook,'" he recalls.

"We sat there staring at our phones for five years, and they never rang!"

With a second big breakthrough in 2015, they found a new way to deliver the particles safely and effectively to their target cells, using a fatty coating called "lipid nanoparticles."

Both developments are part of the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines today.

Beyond vaccines, mRNA technology is also being heralded for its potential to revolutionize medicine.

Weissman's team is working on using RNA to develop a single-injection gene therapy to overcome the defect that causes sickle cell anemia, a genetic blood disease that 200,000 babies are born with in Africa every year.

Significant technical challenges remain to ensure the treatment is able to correctly edit genes and is safe, but the researchers are hopeful.

Kata beliau, dalam aduannya mangsa mendakwa doktor lelaki itu yang merupakan majikannya telah merakam apa yang berlaku dalam tandas dengan menggunakan telefon bimbit miliknya.

“Mangsa yang telah bekerja selama enam tahun sebagai pembantu klinik di sebuah klinik swasta daerah ini menyatakan bahawa ketika mangsa masuk ke tandas pada hari yang sama jam lebih kurang 2.00 petang, mangsa telah ternampak sebuah telefon bimbit berada di kedudukan tinggi dalam keadaan kamera terbuka.

“Mangsa terus mengambil telefon bimbit tersebut dan mengecam telefon bimbit itu milik majikannya,” katanya dalam kenyataan hari ini.

Tambah beliau, wanita tersebut yang terkejut, malu dan terganggu dengan kejadian itu terus mencapai beg tangan dan keluar dari klinik secara tergeas-gesa disedari suspek lalu menghalangnya.

“Suspek juga meminta mangsa memulangkan kembali telefon bimbit tersebut kepadanya dan berjanji akan menghapuskan rakaman tersebut di hadapan mangsa.

“Sejurus mangsa menyerahkan kembali telefon bimbit itu kepada suspek, suspek juga telah menunjukkan perbuatan ‘delete’ (memadam) di hadapan mangsa tetapi mangsa tidak nampak apa yang sebenarnya telah dipadam atau dihapuskan oleh suspek,” ujar beliau.

Mohamad Fakhrudin berkata, berdasarkan risikan maklumat, pada jam 7.30 malam pada hari sama, sepasukan polis dari Bahagian Siasatan Jenayah IPD Petaling Jaya telah menahan suspek.

Jelasnya, polis telah memeriksa suspek dan merampas telefon bimbit miliknya untuk membantu siasatan.

Tambah beliau, kes disiasat di bawah Seksyen 509 dan Seksyen 377 D Kanun Keseksaan dan jika disabitkan kesalahan boleh dihukum penjara maksimum lima lima tahun atau denda atau kedua-duanya. – MalaysiaGazette

SINGAPORE - A male teacher who made a former pupil his "godson" and later molested the boy during a sleepover was jailed for 2½ years on Thursday (Sept 9).

The man, 36, was also given three strokes of the cane.

He was earlier found guilty of two counts of molestation and another charge of attempted molestation after a trial.

Details about the man, the boy and the school cannot be revealed because of a gag order protecting the victim's identity.

The man has been suspended from service since July 2017 and no longer teaches in any school.

He used to be the victim's Primary 6 form teacher and taught English, mathematics and science in 2016.

The court had earlier heard that he and his victim had a "normal teacher-student relationship" at the time. But they also met outside the school three times that year.

They grew closer after the release of the boy's Primary School Leaving Examination results. He had gone to the victim's home to help the child with selecting a secondary school.

The court also heard that the boy had been raised by a single mother and he never had a father figure before the teacher came into his life.

The boy agreed to become the teacher's godson in early 2017 as he felt the man was "sincere" and cared for him. They texted every day and the man supported the child financially.

On June 15, 2017, the man touched the boy's private parts twice when the victim was at his flat for a sleepover. He tried to commit a similar offence the next day.

The boy told his mother about the incident and wanted to report the matter to the police. But she stopped him from doing so.

He finally told a school counsellor what had happened when classes resumed on June 27 that year, and the police were alerted.

In its submissions, the prosecution urged the court to sentence the man to between 31 and 34 months' jail as well as be given five strokes of the cane.

Among other things, it noted the victim's testimony that he became insecure, more sensitive and easily angered after the abuse.

The boy also had suicidal and self-harm thoughts, added the prosecution.

For each count of molesting a child below the age of 14, an offender can be jailed for up to five years, or fined, or caned, or be sentenced to any combination of such punishments.

Singaporean jailed for giving money to Malaysian man to join Islamic State in Syria

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean man was jailed for three years and 10 months on Thursday (Sep 9) after giving money to a Malaysian man who travelled to Syria to join the terrorist group Islamic State.

Mohamed Kazali Salleh, 51, provided about S$1,000 to Wan Mohd Aquil Wan Zainal Abidin, also known as “Akel”, a known Islamic State fighter, said court documents.

On Thursday, Kazali pleaded guilty to two charges under the Terrorism (Suppression of Financing) Act. Another charge under the same act was taken into consideration for sentences.

This is the first prosecution in Singapore for financing the travel of an individual to a foreign country to train to become a terrorist.

THE MEETINGS

At the time of the offences, Kazali was a businessman operating out of Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The court heard that Kazali befriended Akel in Kuala Lumpur in 2009.

During the trip, Akel told Kazali about his religious views, and the pair kept in contact after this encounter, court documents said.

From 2010 to 2013, Kazali met Akel “many times”, and they attended religious sermons and political rallies in Malaysia together, the court heard.

On these occasions, Akel shared with Kazali his extremist ideology. This included Akel's "strong interest" in becoming a fighter in a "Muslim army", said court documents.

"The accused agreed and support Akel's extremist ideology," stated court documents.

TRAVEL TO SYRIA

In mid-2013, Akel told Kazali that he intended to travel to Syria for this purpose, and asked Kazali for money for a plane ticket to Turkey, from where he would travel to Syria.

Later that year, Kazali took Akel to a travel agency and passed him RM 1,000 (about S$386 at the time) to purchase the ticket to Turkey.

In January 2014, Akel contacted Kazali via WhatsApp asking for more money for his travel to Syria. Kazali then got his daughter to remit US$351.75 (about S$450 at the time) via Western Union to Akel's contact in Turkey. Kazali told his daughter the money was to purchase carpets.

Akel joined the Islamic State in 2014, the court heard. He took on a leadership role within the organisation three years later.

“Investigations reveal that he was the most senior Malaysian ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) fighter in Syria, and actively recruited Malaysians to fight for ISIS in Syria,” according to court documents.

Akel was also identified by the Malaysian authorities to be responsible for two Islamic State-linked attack plots in Malaysia in 2019.

These plots involved instructing two Malaysian supporters of the Islamic State to mount attacks on places of worship and police stations in Malaysia in early 2019. The plots were foiled.

Akel was killed by a Russian airstrike in Syria in 2019, the court heard.

KAZALI ARRESTED

Kazali was arrested by the Malaysian Special Branch on Dec 19, 2018 for his terrorism-related activities.

He was deported to Singapore and arrested by the Internal Security Department (ISD) on Jan 7, 2019. The same month, he was issued with an order of detention under the Internal Security Act for his activities in support of the Islamic State.

ISD referred the matter to the Commercial Affairs Department, after which investigations revealed that Kazali provided about S$1,026 to a known terrorist over three occasions.

On Thursday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Edwin Soh asked for Kazali to be jailed for 46 months.

He said Kazali had carried out the offences in a "deliberate fashion" and that his actions would "engender public disquiet".

Kazali was “fully aware” that the money would be used for a “nefarious purpose”, Mr Soh said.

He added that it was with Kazali’s money that Akel managed to arrive in Syria, and subsequently rose to become the most senior Malaysian fighter in the Islamic State. Kazali was “key” in aiding the rise of the “notorious terrorist”, Mr Soh said.

Kazali’s lawyer Noor Mohamed Marican said that his client was “grateful that he has been stopped in his tracks as a result of his detention”.

“He realised after the arrest that he was not cautious enough when Akel approached him, and that’s how it all started,” Mr Marican said.

Kazali felt he was “brainwashed”, but that it was his fault for “not being alert”, the defence lawyer said.

His client now “condemns” the Islamic State, Mr Marican said.

Kazali gave his “sincere undertaking” that he will not maintain any contact with any person directly or indirectly participating in terrorism, Mr Marican said. Since his detention, Kazali felt that he has been fully rehabilitated, the lawyer added.

Mr Marican also noted that Kazali’s wife and daughter and other family members were in court on Thursday to “give him assurance”.

In sentencing Kazali, District Judge Jasvender Kaur said she noted the nature of the organisation - "one of the largest and most dangerous terrorist organisations" - and the role that Akel played in the organisation.

Samsung Galaxy Note trademark dropped, killing off hopes of a Galaxy Note 22 series
Samsung skipped the Galaxy Note 21 series this year, with the Galaxy Z series taking its place. Now, it has emerged that Samsung has not renewed its Galaxy Note trademark, making the chances of it releasing the Galaxy Note 22 series seem even more remote.

Samsung has updated its trademarks for numerous product names, including the Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series. The trademarks were renewed in August, presumably for next year's set of Galaxy smartphones. Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy S series will return next year, with the S22 series tipped to debut RDNA 2 GPUs in a smartphone form factor.

Samsung continues to push the Galaxy Z series hard too. For example, the company received over 900,000 Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 pre-orders in South Korea during the device's first week alone. In short, it appears that the Galaxy Z series has replaced the Galaxy Note series, at least from Samsung's point of view.

The omission of the Galaxy Note series from these new trademarks underlines this, in our opinion. Arguably, Samsung has not managed to replace the Galaxy Note series entirely yet though, even after bringing S Pen support to the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold3.

Neither are able to carry an S Pen in their chassis though, unlike the Galaxy Note series. Evidently, the Galaxy Note series is not currently in Samsung's plans for 2022. Hence, we doubt that there will be any replacement for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra any time soon.

BOSTON (Reuters) - A Chinese businessman was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in prison after admitting that he illegally exported marine technology with uses in anti-submarine warfare from the United States for the benefit of a Chinese military university.

Shuren Qin, who founded a company that sold oceanographic instruments, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Denise Casper in Boston after admitting he illegally exported devices called hydrophones that can be used to monitor sound underwater.

Prosecutors had sought 7-1/2 years in prison for Qin, who must also pay a $20,000 fine. His guilty plea was conditional, allowing him to appeal a ruling by Casper to not suppress the evidence against him.

The marine biologist was charged in 2018 amid rising U.S. concerns about China’s national security threat, a continued focus of the Biden administration. Qin, 45, had already served three months in jail after his arrest.

Defense lawyers said he founded LinkOcean Technologies Ltd in China in 2005 to provide oceanographic instruments to scientists, and immigrated to the United States with his family in 2014 as a permanent resident.

Prosecutors said Qin from 2015 to 2016 exported hydrophones to Northwestern Polytechnical University, a Chinese military research institute involved in underwater drone projects, by deceiving a U.S. supplier and without obtaining export licenses.

His lawyers say Qin was unaware of the university’s intended purposes for the products, which also had civilian, scientific uses.

“These are not top-secret technologies,” said Qin’s lawyer, Sara Silva.

Qin, who lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts, in the Boston area pleaded guilty in April to 10 counts, including conspiring to commit export violations, visa fraud, money laundering and smuggling.

Prosecutors originally also accused Qin of exporting unmanned surface vehicles and robotic boats, and alleged he supplied $8 million in goods to Chinese government-controlled entities.

He instead only admitted to charges concerning 60 hydrophones worth $100,000.
