Malaysian volunteers recall horrors of war in Yemen

SEPANG: It was a terrifying yet meaningful experience for four volunteers from the Malaysian Relief Agency who joined a humanitarian mission in Yemen.

The four volunteers — Wan Kamarudin Wan Ibrahim; Mohamad Zhafri Ikhwan Roslam, Azizul Naszri Alias and Mohd Fahrin Mohammad, who represented the Malaysian media, were stationed in Oman for 13 days to help the people of Yemen and refugees who were affected by war.

Kamarudin described the situation in Yemen as very unstable.

“I have been to several conflict areas such as Palestine for humanitarian missions but I have never seen a situation as bad as Yemen. The people there are running out of food, water, medicine and shelter.

“There are about 28 million citizens in Yemen, and I can say that two-thirds of the total population need assistance. According to the United Nations, nearly seven million people in Yemen are suffering from famine.

“Some parts of Yemen are also at high risk. We could hear the sound of gunshots everywhere and it seemed normal for the people of Yemen,” he told the New Straits Times after arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), yesterday.

The four, from One-to-One View Production House, arrived at KLIA via Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight SV828 at 1pm.

They joined the mission from April 7-20.

Kamarudin said they had to remain in Yemen for nearly 72 hours before entering Oman. He said the team were assigned to do an assessment in Yemen to identify the areas that needed help in terms of water supply, food and medication.

He said despite the horrifying experience, he was looking forward to joining the mission again.

“For me, it is satisfying to be able to help people in conflict countries despite the danger we had to deal with.

“We have documented the scenes in Yemen, and the video will be shown during the Yemen Charity Night,” he said.

Yemen Charity Night will be held at Vivatel Kuala Lumpur on Apr 30.

Malaysian Relief Agency senior manager Fauziah Tahar said the agency aims to raise RM300,000 at the charity dinner.

“I hope Malaysians will join the charity dinner and watch the documentary video on the hardship of the people affected by war in Yemen.

“We hope to continuously receive public donations even after the dinner. We hope to raise RM4 million for Yemen as lives there are at stake,” she said.

Donations can be channeled to CIMB Bank account 86000 59478 under the name Malaysian Relief Agency Foundation.

According to Harian Metro, Ibrahim was arrested at a hotel there at 2.30am.

It was reported that Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Dr Ashraf Wajdi Dusuki, said police arrested Ibrahim because his actions have damaged the image of Islam.

The Malay shaman is infamous for his bizarre rituals, such as the theatrical display he performed outside the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) mortuary on March 13 – complete with bamboo shoots which he used as binoculars – to “protect” the country from harm, and which was captured by the international press, much to the embarrassment of many Malaysians.

After observing his many shenanigans, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) director-general Tan Sri Othman Mustapha advised people not to pay the shaman any heed, because Ibrahim’s rituals contradict the teachings of Islam.

24 April 2017 declared public holiday to mark the installation of Sultan Muhammad V from Kelantan as Malaysia’s 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Employment Insurance Scheme (SIP) for private sector employees will take effect from Jan 1, 2018 onwards.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the move will benefit some 6.5 million employees nationwide.

In a statement today, he said the insurance will provide financial assistance and provide new job opportunities for those who have lost their source of employment.

“This new social safety net is aimed at employees who have lost their employment source, to receive financial aid and find new employment,” said Najib in a statement today.

Under the SIP scheme, he said workers who lost their employment will receive temporary remuneration and will look for new jobs under a employment service programme,” he added.

“In addition, workers who lost their jobs will also undergo a retraining scheme to improve their skills and enhance their employability,” he added.

Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said the SIP will be funded via contributions from employees and employers, and will be managed by the Social Security Organisation.

He said the necessary laws for SIP are currently being drafted and are expected to be tabled in the June Parliament session.

“This law is expected to be enforced from Jan 1, 2018 onwards, whereas benefit payments can be made from Jan 1 2019,” Najib said.

The government believes that the implementation of the SIP is a long-term initiative, which will give a positive impact to employees and employer’s groups.

“Other nation’s experience shows that the SIP acts as an economic stabiliser and continues to maintain economic activity in a sustainable manner, especially during tough times,” Najib said.

He adds that the SIP will enhance the effectiveness of the labour market through matching offers and demands in a more efficient manner as well increase productivity and industrial competitiveness.
