Domestic cruise tours to restart on Dec 22

GEORGE TOWN: If you are looking to step aboard a luxury cruise, you probably won’t have to wait long.

Cruise tourism is set to make a comeback after a near two-year hiatus with Star Pisces by Genting Cruise Lines departing from the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal to Langkawi on Dec 22.

This will mark the first international cruise line to homeport that is resuming commercial operations in the country.

Genting Cruise Lines vice-president (sales) Cynthia Lee said there would be five trips every week.

“We hope to call in on more domestic destinations and expand our itineraries with the inclusion of regional destinations such as Phuket in the near future to spur the cruise tourism industry.

“We are also actively engaging with various port authorities to create ‘harmonised cruising standards’ in the hope of gradually reopening international cruises in a controlled and safe manner,” she said during a press conference at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal yesterday.

Lee added that Star Pisces, which has a 1,700-capacity for passengers, would operate at a reduced rate of 50%, or only 850 passengers, as a preventive measure against the coronavirus.

“All passengers must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 and present a negative test result after completing the mandatory pre-boarding Antigen Rapid Test (ART) at the cruise terminal on the day of departure,” she said.

Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng said the reopening would enable the cruise tourism industry to be revitalised after it was halted in March 2020 because of the pandemic.

“The National Security Council has given the green light for the resumption of domestic cruise operations, thanks mainly to PPC, Genting Cruise Lines, Penang Port Sdn Bhd and the respective government agencies which have worked very closely to get this nod.

“There were about 20 cruise companies before the pandemic in 2019. We will continue to do promotions to support the industry and hope that these companies can return soon,” he said.

Also present was Genting Cruise Lines senior vice-president (marine operations and safety) Capt Harvard Ramsoy.

Bookings for Star Pisces will be opened by mid-December to all Malaysians, foreigners with valid Malaysian long-term visit passes as well as international tourists who have completed and passed the quarantine and home surveillance order by the authorities.

SUBANG JAYA: Travellers who want an alternate way to get to KL International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2 can opt for an airport shuttle service from the Putra Heights LRT station for only RM10.

Those who wish to get to the two airports can just buy the combo ticket at any LRT, MRT, BRT or monorail counter.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the airport shuttle services began operations last month to help increase connectivity and seamless travel for passengers.

“The combo ticket is sold for RM10 and comprises rail and bus tickets for a one-way journey.

“So if you’re staying in Sungai Buloh, for example, you can take the MRT, then take the LRT to come here (Putra Heights LRT station) and hop on the bus, all for just RM10.

“This is the government’s vision for an integrated service and we want to make it convenient and most importantly, affordable for the people,” he said at the launch of the service at the Putra Heights LRT station yesterday.

The journey from Putra Heights to KLIA and KLIA2 takes about 40 minutes, with a bus departing every 30 minutes.

Loke said Putra Heights was chosen due to its strategic location, as it connects the LRT Kelana Jaya Line and Ampang Line.

Those at KLIA and KLIA2 who wish to continue their journey on the Kelana Jaya or Ampang line can also ride the shuttle bus that will ferry them straight to the Putra Heights LRT station and go to their respective destinations.

Loke said Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, has provided five shuttle buses that operate on a daily basis with a total capacity of 37 passengers per bus.

To further increase connectivity, Loke said a private company had also offered to provide airport shuttle services from the Putra Heights LRT station.

Loke said the JetBus airport shuttle service managed by Perkhidmatan Hafeena Sdn Bhd provides the service at RM4 for a one-way journey from the Putra Heights LRT station to KLIA and KLIA 2, with a bus departing every 60 to 90 minutes.

Manager Mohd Aidil Zakaria, 33, said he was glad that there were such services.

“It is so expensive to take e-hailing services or KLIA express from KL Sentral. I look forward to travelling more using this combo ticket price,” said Mohd Aidil.

Accountant Annabelle Wong, 40, said she would not mind taking the shuttle service if she was travelling alone.

“But if I am travelling with my husband or family, I would rather take a cab as we would have luggage to bring around and by making an appointment with the taxi, the car comes straight to my house. I wouldn’t have to wait 30 minutes for the bus,” she said.

I am applying for credit card but bank said need this J form. anyone can help to explain?
