Viet singers forced into performing sexual acts

TAIPING: Three Vietnamese women, initially hired as singers at a karaoke lounge here, lodged police reports alleging they were forced to perform sexual acts besides just singing.

The trio, in their early 20s, stopped a police patrol car not far from where they lived in Pokok Assam last Sunday and pleaded to the policemen to help them.

OCPD Asst Comm Yusuf Mohd Diah said the women were brought to the police station where they lodged a report with the help of an interpreter.

“They said they felt cheated as they were hired as singers but were later forced to follow their employers’ clients after work and perform sexual favours at odd hours,’’ he said.

ACP Yusuf said the girls who arrived on social visit passes here on March 21, paid about RM1,800 to the agent in their village for the trip here.

He said they were housed in Pokok Assam by two men in their 20s who picked them up as soon as they arrived at KLIA.

He said police knew the identity of one of them and were on the lookout for him.

“The case is being investigated under Section 12 of the Anti Human Trafficking Act 2007 where an offender is liable to be jailed up to 15 years and fined up to RM100,000 if found guilty.

“We have also obtained a two-week court order to have the girls placed under custody at a safe home in Kuala Lumpur,’’ he added.

Tourist dies after falling into volcano

A SWEDISH tourist was killed yesterday when he fell 150minto the crater of Mount Batur, an active volcano on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali.

The 25-year-old man slipped as he tried to peer into the crater after a dawn trek to the summit, which climbs to 1700m on the north-eastern side of the island, police said.

"He was looking into the crater, slipped and fell 150m," local police chief Made Oka said.

He said emergency responders were at the scene and were trying recover the tourist's body using ropes.

Police were unable to provide the man's name.

Mount Batur is easy to climb compared to some other volcanoes in Indonesia and has become popular with day-trippers on Bali.

You Really Can Be Bored to Death, Experts Say

LONDON — Can you really be bored to death?

In a commentary to be published in the International Journal of Epidemiology in April, experts say there's a possibility that the more bored you are, the more likely you are to die early.

Annie Britton and Martin Shipley of University College London caution that boredom alone isn't likely to kill you — but it could be a symptom of other risky behavior like drinking, smoking, taking drugs or having a psychological problem.

The researchers analyzed questionnaires completed between 1985 and 1988 by more than 7,500 London civil servants ages 35 to 55. The civil servants were asked if they had felt bored at work during the previous month.

Britton and Shipley then tracked down how many of the participants had died by April 2009. Those who reported they had been very bored were two and a half times more likely to die of a heart problem than those who hadn't reported being bored.

But when the authors made a statistical adjustment for other potential risk factors, like physical activity levels and employment grade, the effect was reduced.

Other experts said while the research was preliminary, the link between boredom and increased heart problems was possible — if not direct.

"Someone who is bored may not be motivated to eat well, exercise, and have a heart-healthy lifestyle. That may make them more likely to have a cardiovascular event," said Dr. Christopher Cannon, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard University and spokesman for the American College of Cardiology.

He also said if people's boredom was ultimately linked to depression, it wouldn't be surprising if they were more susceptible to heart attacks; depression has long been recognized as a risk factor for heart disease. Cannon also said it was possible that when people are bored, dangerous hormones are released in the body that stress the heart.

Britton and Shipley said boredom was probably not in itself that deadly. "The state of boredom is almost certainly a proxy for other risk factors," they wrote. "It is likely that those who were bored were also in poor health."

Others said boredom was potentially as dangerous as stress.

"Boredom is not innocuous," said Sandi Mann, a senior lecturer in occupational psychology at the University of Central Lancashire who studies boredom.

She said boredom is linked to anger suppression, which can raise blood pressure and suppress the body's natural immunity. "People who are bored also tend to eat and drink more, and they're probably not eating carrots and celery sticks," she said.

Still, Mann said it was only people who were chronically bored who should be worried.

"Everybody is bored from time to time," she said.

Last speaker of ancient language of Bo dies

The last speaker of an ancient language in India's Andaman Islands has died at the age of about 85, a leading linguist has told the BBC.

Professor Anvita Abbi said that the death of Boa Sr was highly significant because one of the world's oldest languages - Bo - had come to an end.

She said that India had lost an irreplaceable part of its heritage.

Languages in the Andamans are thought to originate from Africa. Some may be 70,000 years old.

The islands are often called an "anthropologist's dream" and are one of the most linguistically diverse areas of the world.

Professor Abbi - who runs the Vanishing Voices of the Great Andamanese (Voga) website - explained: "After the death of her parents, Boa was the last Bo speaker for 30 to 40 years.

She was often very lonely and had to learn an Adamanese version of Hindi in order to communicate with people.

Ghost told me to stab family, says youth

KUALA TERENGGANU: A youth claimed that a “ghost” directed him to stab his family members, which caused the death of his father during a scuffle at their home in Kampung Duyung Wan Su, Duyung Besar, here.

However, police are probing the 20-year-old boat repairer under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, and also screening him for suspected drug abuse.

Japanese monks serve up alcohol and hip hop music

Tokyo, Japan (CNN) -- The Buddhist religion has largely remained the same over the past few centuries, but a group of monks in Japan are spicing things up by turning to alcohol and rap music to lure in followers.

The monks are calling it Buddhism 2010.

Kansho Tagai, who is a Buddhist monk, believes it's time to change for the future and doesn't mind if it means dropping the chants and bringing on the rap music.

Tagai also prefers to go by his street name -- Mr. Happiness.

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a 2,000-year-old temple in Alexandria dedicated to a cat goddess.

The temple is the first trace of the royal quarters of the Ptolemaic dynasty to be revealed in Alexandria.

The find confirms the Greek dynasty of Egyptians continued the worship of ancient animal deities.

Many more ruins of the ancient capital of Hellenic Egypt lie preserved under the modern city, yet to be unearthed, archaeologists say.

The temple, discovered in the Kom el-Dekkah neighbourhood of the city, is believed to belong to Queen Berenike II, wife of Ptolemy III who ruled Egypt in the third century BC, Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities has said.

Two teens hurt in electrical pole explosion

PETALING JAYA: A Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) transformer on an electrical pole at Guar Chempedak, Kedah exploded and caught fire yesterday.

The 4.40pm incident caused two teenage girls walking nearby to suffer minor burns.

One of the girls, who suffered burns on her right arm, was given outpatient treatment at a hospital while her friend suffered burns on her back.

In a statement here, TNB said it was currently offering medical assistance and other forms of aid to the victims.

Electricity supply to certain parts of the Guar Chempedak town was also disrupted. The supply was restored by 7pm.

Tourists burnt in Hong Kong acid attack

Nine tourists and a child were among 30 people injured in an acid attack in a busy street in Hong Kong.

More than 100 people have been injured in similar attacks since December 2008 when bottles of acid were dropped from buildings in a pedestrian zone.

The latest attack was at the Temple Street night market in Yau Ma Tei when two bottles were thrown, state broadcaster RTHK reported.

The 30 people suffered light injuries and were treated in hospital.

Police were investigating, with firemen also on the scene, but no arrests had been made, AFP reported.

In December six people were injured when a bottle of acid was thrown down a street in Causeway Bay, a shopping hub which was packed with people celebrating the Hong Kong football team's victory over Japan in the East Asian Games final.

Police have previously offered 1.5 million Hong Kong dollars (£120,000; $190,000) for useful information on the attacks.

A rooftop camera network was set up over Mong Kok, the site of one attack, has failed to catch those responsible.

Houston Mom Allegedly Seduces Canadian Teen Online, Lures Him From Home

A Houston mother of four was arrested Tuesday and remains in jail after allegedly starting a sexual relationship with a Canadian teenager through the online game "World of Warcraft," and then flying to his town and luring him away from home, MyFoxHouston.com reported.

Lauri Price, 42, thought she could get around U.S. statutory rape laws by having sex with the 16-year-old in Canada, where that is the legal age of consent, Harris County investigators told MyFoxHouston.

Authorities say the substitute teacher started having an online sexual relationship with the boy, then 15 years old, in September 2008 after meeting him through the Internet video game, said Donna Hawkins, a spokeswoman for the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

"When she traveled to Canada, she actually took the boy from his home and they had a large statewide manhunt in Canada,” Harris County Prosecutor Eric Devlin told MyFox. “The child was missing for about 36 hours."

Police say Price and the teen were found in a bed and breakfast. The 16-year-old was taken home.

Price came back to Harris County where she was booked into jail.

"If she does make bond she can't have any contact with her children or any child under the age of 17," Devlin told MyFoxHouston.com.

On Dec. 29, Price flew back to Canada and managed to lure the teen from his home, taking him to a hotel in Rosseau, about 70 miles away, and having sex with him, Gray said.

Price is being held in the Harris County Jail under bonds totaling $20,000.

If convicted, she faces anywhere from two to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for each charge, Hawkins said.

Dad Put Daughter in Dryer and Turned It On

An Ohio father is facing a laundry list of charges for allegedly putting his 7-year-old daughter in the dryer, closing the door and turning it on, Fox8.com reported.

Prosecutors told the Cleveland station after the girl told her school teacher her dad put her in the dryer, the school contacted children's services and charges were filed.

"There's no explaining this type of activity, why any individual would place any human being or any animal or anything in a dryer is unexplainable and to a normal thinking person, there's no explanation and obviously this man has issues," said Mike O'Malley, first assistant to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason. "If you're capable of putting your child in a clothes dryer you're probably capable of a lot of horrible things."

Prosecutors say it wasn't the first time the girl, who has a condition that stunts her growth, was put in the dryer, Fox8.com reported.

Steve McClairin faces two counts of endangering children, felonious assault, kidnapping and domestic violence. He faces up to 33 years behind bars.

Malaysian Halal Food To Be Sold At 180 Tesco Store

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysian halal food products will soon be availabe on the shelves of 180 Tesco stores in Britain when four small-and-medium (SME) enterprise suppliers ship RM600,000 worth of items, beginning Jan 11.

Tesco Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Chris Bush said the export of halal food products by these suppliers to Tesco UK was part of Tesco Malaysia's programme to promote Malaysian exports to the British market.

"Local suppliers and SMEs are important because their range and offer is unique and different from the big multinational suppliers.

"Locally produced products are also of high quality and need to be promoted to gain wider awareness and acceptance by the public," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

The four suppliers making their foray into the British market are Dewina Food Industries, Sal's Food Industries Sdn Bhd, Vit Makanan (KL) Sdn Bhd and Kampong Koh Sauce (M) Sdn Bhd whose products have passed the strict British Retailers Consortium standards.

Bush said there was a huge market for halal products in the United Kingdom which has 2.4 million Muslim consumers.
