Believe me when I say this – Macs can be upgraded too. I am using a MacBook Air 11-inch from mid-2013, with a 128GB SSD, which is clearly insufficient. Transcend has come up with a real simple but pretty useful way to overcome this bottleneck. Transcend’s JetDrive 820 is an upgrade in both storage and speed, armed with the PCIe Gen 3.0 interface, delivering read and write speeds of up to 950MB per second. It is the native PCIe SSD upgrade that Mac enthusiasts have been waiting for, with capacities ranging up to 960GB and today I got this 240GB version for my upgrade.

The JetDrive 820 comes with a five-year warranty and is compatible with the following Macs:
•MacBook Air (11- and 13-inch): Mid 2013-2017 (6,1 / 6,2 / 7,1 / 7,2)
•MacBook Pro with Retina Display (13- and 15-inch): Late 2013 – Mid 2015 (11,1 / 11,2 / 11,3 / 11,4 / 11,5 / 12,1)

First, let’s talk specs. The Transcend JetDrive 820 is made with the latest 3D NAND flash technology and is offered in capacities of up to 960GB. Its read and write speeds can reach up to 950MB/s. It is faster than any SATA 3-based SSDs out there.

At the top side, you can see that there is a Nanya DRAM chip and a bank of NAND flash chips.

The package includes two screwdrivers – one with a P5 bit and another with a T5 bit. That means you don’t need to own any sort of special screwdriver set to open up the machine. However, as Transcend has stated, upgrading a Mac Pro or Mac mini requires additional screwdrivers. Though, you can purchase them separately on the Transcend website.

The JetDrive 820 is a straight swap for the original.

JetDrive Toolbox software
They developed their own tailor-made software to let you monitor the SSD’s health, enable TRIM, and even upgrade its firmware.

You had better to install the JetDrive Toolbox software because you need to enable TRIM. The only way you can enable TRIM is through this software. This is to prolong your SSD’s life span.

There are two ways to do the migration – either by creating a full carbon copy image to an external storage device with SuperDuper! and restore it after the SSDs have been swapped, or through Time Machine.

The data cloning process might take a couple of hours, but the actual installation should take less than half an hour. You want to do the installation in a clean place with enough free time without distractions to complete the process end-to-end. Although SSD is expensive, the performance is spectacular - especially since Apple has incorporated PCI Express (PCIe)-based flash storage in newer models. I am happy that Transcend is offering an alternative to the market and it works great on my MacBook Air.

We've seen the dilemma of console gamers over the years since the days of Sony PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360. Let's be honest here - there are games these days that easily take up ~50GB, and some are about 100GB of storage on your console today. These things aren't really avoidable as there are always new games coming out that takes up a larger-than-expected amount of storage space. Enter the world of external storage - this is where we're trying to expand an XBOX One's storage with a Transcend StoreJet 25CK3 2.5-inch external storage enclosure, together with the Transcend SSD230S 256GB SSD.

We always have more than a few games, and that can easily chew up your storage. Yet for the PlayStation 4, a 500GB hard disk will only have 407GB usable - while the remaining 93GB is reserved for the system. The situation is similar with the XBOX One but in a more drastic way - only 362GB out of the total 500GB is usable.

Surely you can indeed open up the entire console and change your hard disk - but XBOX One gamers don't have that privilege without voiding their warranty. Hence, it's the perfect opportunity to show you the marriage between the Transcend StoreJet 25CK3 and the Transcend SSD230S SSD, and how it works together with the XBOX One.

In summary, it's simple. Within the packaging of the Transcend StoreJet 25CK3, it has a complete set of accessories that will get you through from the beginning towards the end. There's a screwdriver, a USB 3.0 micro-B to USB-A cable, the enclosure itself, and also a spacer.

That spacer is important as there are 2.5-inch storage drive that are either 7mm or 9.5mm in height. That spacer is meant to fill in the 2mm gap if you have a 7mm storage drive.

The installation steps are rather straightforward too - dismantle the entire Transcend StoreJet 25CK3, take the PCB part and connect it to your storage device. In this case (pun intended), we're using the Transcend SSD230S - a 7mm-thick SSD. Hence, we'll have to use the spacer. Just place it on top, and position everything back into the enclosure and screw it back shut. Then, wrap the protective silicon sleeve back on and you're done!

Preparing it to work with XBOX One

Many might think that the SSD will work right after plugging it in - but since when are things so simple, anyway?

To get an external storage device to work with the XBOX One, we first have to plug it in and format the external hard disk to the appropriate type first.

The main option here is to choose your install priority. If you choose the priority to install it to your external storage, then you can literally bring it out and about to play using other XBOX Ones - granted that you sign into your XBOX Live first. The other option is to prioritize installation to your internal storage first - then when it's full, the game files will overflow to your external storage device.

In this case, we're prioritizing installation on the external storage - as we want to show you the impact of doing it.

Benchmarks

So the first thing that crosses everyone's mind is this - how does it impact your gaming experience? Sure, I have more storage space now, but doesn't it affect my game loading speed? And the answer is yes - yes it does.

The SSD will be bottlenecked by the USB 3.0 interface. However, the IOPS should be higher than a conventional mechanical hard disk, and an SSD will have better random 4KB read and write speeds too.

In this test, we're only going to try game loading speeds, as that's the main impact when it comes to storage devices on a console anyway.

Verdict

Having games stored on an external SSD does benefit gamers who don't want to stuff everything into the internal storage because XBox One owner should be aware of the internal storage drive which gets very slow overtime and games like GTA 5 and Batman Arkham Knight can really take up to 1 minute to load into the game.

Storing your games (digital copy) into an external SSD can do more than just saving you some extra space on your internal storage. Blazing fast performance is something you can really expect from an SSD and our game loading speed benchmark is the proof - because numbers don't lie. The best part of this is, you can bring the external SSD and plug it into any XBox One, sign-in to your XBox account and you're good to go with your favorite titles without having to re-download everything.

I don’t spend much time on the road as a lot of professionals. However, the more time I spend in the car, the more aware I am becoming about the safety of me and my family and that of other drivers. Dash cams are compact cameras that can be used to record 24/7 video from the view of your windshield. You can use one to capture the picturesque scenery on your family road trip and if you were ever unfortunately in an accident or pulled over for a traffic violation, the dash camera video offers excellent footage for insurance companies and courtrooms.

Most dash cams on the market can already do pretty impressive stuff and this Transcend DrivePro 50 comes with the features I required at an affordable price. I am impressed by the compactness of its size, the large aperture and viewing angle with the full HD imaging sensor. Upon opening the box, it contains the camera unit, 16GB High Endurance microSD card, adhesive mount, warranty card, and a power cable that attaches to the car cigarette lighter. At the front of it is the camera lens, a microphone and obviously the Transcend logo. On the left side is the microSD card slot and red button that act as the power on, record, and off button. In the event of a collision, the built-in g-sensor in Transcend’s DrivePro 50 will detect the impact and instantly trigger an emergency recording. Emergency recording mode protects the current recording as well as the critical seconds before the accident from being overwritten. Alternatively, you can also manually activate emergency recording mode by pressing the red button on the side of the unit. In the back, there is no LCD but the brand’s logo.

Now, the question you may ask is how you will be able to watch all those videos if there is no LCD screen. This is the place where your smartphone will take a dive in. You will just have to download the DrivePro app from the App store or Google Play. The App connects through the Wi-Fi and allows you to watch those videos live or you also have an option of streaming and saving them into your phone. What’s more, through the app, you can change all the settings such as the G-sensor sensitivity, Wi-Fi name and password, video length.

To start the process of recording, just presses the red button. It will automatically start the recording as long as it is plugged in with your car. There is an LED light on the left which will turn blue when the recording starts. If you want to watch your video or check if the camera is lined up properly, just use the App on your smartphone and connect it through the Wi-Fi.

Here I mounted the DrivePro 50 to the front window of my cart and set off to capture the essence of the drive. What I like about the DrivePro 50 is that it is very easy to mount. You don’t have to read the manual to install it and it only took me like 5 minutes to get it ready for the trip.

The camera emits a single beep when powered up. When connected to the DrivePro through the Wi-Fi, you can stream, playback, and download videos, and easily adjust DrivePro 50’s settings on the smartphone or tablet. The good thing is, you can live view what is happening in front of the road even if you are a passenger sitting in the back.

The dashcam integrates a wide 130° viewing angle and a Full HD imaging sensor for clear and smooth 1080p (v30fps) video recording. In addition, the 6 glass lenses plus 1 infrared filter lens are designed to prevent fogging from heat generated during extended recordings and to ensure the whole trip is recorded in high clarity. It also has a small built in battery for an extra 30-second recording in case of power failure.
