KUALA LUMPUR (June 10): Speculations have surfaced regarding AmBank Group
ex-chief financial officer (CFO) Mandy Rutherford after she withdrew from taking up one of the most senior banking roles in New Zealand in March 2018.

New Zealand-based news portal Stuff Ltd reported yesterday (June 9) that Rutherford, who spent six years as AmBank CFO, was set to start a job at Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) that would have paid nearly NZ$1 million (RM2.76 million) a year, but did not show up for work.

BNZ chief executive Angela Mentis was quoted as saying Rutherford was never on BNZ’s payroll and that her withdrawal happened just as she joined the company.

"It was personal reasons for Mandy and we respected that and supported that. It is her personal situation that changed," Mentis said.

TNB high electricity bill error

I have a RM400 bill shoved at me. I have also paid bills as high as RM180 because I were in a hurry to go for an overseas trip. But the RM400 bill, shoved at me plus a demonstrated threat to cut my electricity supply (in order to force me to pay) just after my return from overseas, was too much.

I refused to pay and visited the TNB local office 6 times. The sixth time was after GE14 i.e. 9th May 2018.

At the sixth time I threatened to make a report "somewhere" if my complaint is not resolved to my satisfaction.

It was only then that the TNB executive admitted that there was a mistake. I insisted on knowing what was the mistake.

She then showed me a calculation in a bill that was not sent to me (the RM400 demand was purportedly for arrears (but I have not receive bills for 3 months prior to that) which showed a wrong calculation:

the unit consumed was correct and also the unit price; but the multiplication was wrong. It was like unit consumed 100 x unit cost 0.218 = RM400.

I asked the executive how could that happen? She answered that it happened during data-conversion from the legacy system to the SAP system and the error was not detected.

My opinion is that such a glaring error could only be undetected due to detail checks were NOT made after data conversion. Customer accounts are so important that there should always be a 100% check after data conversion before billing.

An even worse possibility is that there is an error in the logic of the data-conversion program. If so, there would be hundreds if not thousands of similar errors. Apparently no one tested the program thoroughly before using it.

Another possible error to note: the new electric meter is likely susceptible to surges from lightning strikes. It could jump as a result. I suspect this to be so due to the large variation in my monthly bill after my old meter was changed to the new digital meter.

Also after the change to the new digital meter, my monthly electricity bill went up by 40% overall for no apparent reason other than the change of meters from the old analog meters to the new digital meters .

There is also a third more ominous possibility: that charges were deliberately reduced for some 'favoured' customers and in order to balance the books, the amount of reduction was distributed to other smaller users who would normally not question small quirks in their monthly bills. The data conversion from legacy systems to SAP would have presented just such an opportunity for such frauds.

Therefore I suggest CEO Amir to ask his Internal Audit to recheck the entire data conversion of the customer accounts. Hire a forensic auditor from outside if need be if you suspect that your Internal Audit Department had been compromised.

Alphabet Inc. subsidiary Wing Aviation on Tuesday became the first drone delivery company to be awarded air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). With the certification, Wing Aviation now has the same certifications as smaller airlines and can turn its tests into a commercial service that delivers goods from local businesses to homes.

The approval grants Wing permission to conduct flights beyond visual line of sight and over people, Wing says. The company will start commercial deliveries in Blacksburg, Virginia later in 2019. Wing spun out of Alphabet’s X research division in July 2018.

“This is an important step forward for the safe testing and integration of drones into our economy,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Elaine L. Chao, who made the announcement. “Safety continues to be our Number One priority as this technology continues to develop and realize its full potential.”

Part of the approval process required Wing Aviation to submit evidence that its operations are safe. Wing’s drones have flown more than 70,000 test flights and made more than 3,000 deliveries. Wing says it submitted data that shows “delivery by Wing carries a lower risk to pedestrians than the same trip made by car.”

PwC estimates the total addressable market for commercial drones is $127.3 billion. That includes $45.2 billion in infrastructure, $32.4 billion in agriculture, $13 billion in transport and $10.5 billion in security.

Apple could slash iPhone prices

Apple has signalled that it could lower iPhone prices in an attempt to boost falling sales.

The firm reported a decline in both revenue and profits in its latest quarterly financial results on Tuesday night.

In the three months ending in December, it reported a 15 per cent fall in sales of the iPhone.

This reflected a dive from £46.8 billion in 2017, down to £39.8 billion a year later.

Apple Chief executive Tim Cook said customers were are also struggling with the firm's high prices.
