LED - Brightness ? how to choose ?

Hi all,

I got a lot of email and PM from forumers asking about LED, how many units they should buy, how to put their lights, it is bright enough ... etc
well, i repost some of the thing to watch up when buying LED,

Standards
1. Lumen/watt: Higher better ; above 70
2. Wattage: Lower better, 1000lumen about 10- 12w
3. Angle: flood design 90 - 130
4. CRI: higher better, above 80 for warm color , above 72 for cool colors
5. Hours: longer better, 25000 hours and above
6. Chips: it depends, better chips you light will fade or maintain brightness longer.

A proper design, all manufacturer will give the designer the IES file, this will tell the consumption, the maintenance cycle of the light, angle, approximate lux , budget, etc

why do we need this for LED.

for example, a good manufacturer with good chip will have less degration, mean the brightness will stay there longer
X chip give 16 watt 1000 lumen, 15 - 20% lost after 1 year << poor, means need to purchase higher wattage for drop off
Y chip give 15 watt 900 lumen, 3% - 6% lost after 1.5 year << good, means can maintain the same wattage not need to get higher wattage for drop off.

X might be a bit cheaper and Y might be a bit more expensive. So this give us idea how to design and how to budget for the owner.

Why so many after good LED chips, i seen forumers come up with CREE, Bridgelux, Samsung, Osram, etc ?

well they give high efficient, high lumen per watt, and less degration, but of course the price is more than normal chip set.

Possible in the market give very good cheap at very good price ?

Well will Merc, BMW , Audi sell you at toyota price ?

Many LED driver burn quickly, can i get one more reliable ?

Yes, there are drivers that are very good, guarantee no problem for 5 - 10 years, but are you willing to pay for it,
i.e. whole set led is about 60 - 100 , will you willing to pay twice the money to get a set of the driver that last 10 years.
most of the manufacturer will give warranty and most of the owner will gamble on this, not going for better driver.

So what do we need to design light,

1. we need you furniture layout, we need to know where are your cabinets, sofa, bed, study table, etc
2. we need your ceiling height, wall material, floor material. i.e. plaster ceiling, concrete ceiling painted white, tiles , wall paper
3. we need your M&E plan

From my experience selling LED for the last 4 years, i found out that the following rule of thumb to determine how much a person should pay on LEDs

1. Lumen/Watt (brightness/energy use = efficiency) i.e. 6 watt , 550 lumen = 91 l/m = very efficient
2. CRI (color rendering index) below 70, poor ; 70+ , ok ; 80 + good ; 90 + super expensive
3. Lifespans (25,000 ; 35,000 ; 50,000 hours)
4. Warranty (6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years)
5. Brand of the chips (CREE, Bridgelux, Samsung, Epistar, Citizen, Toshiba, no brand etc)

Industry standard
1. Lumen per watt @ 3000k - downlight >85 , MR16 replacement > 40, others >65
2. CRI >80
3. Lifespan >35,000 hours
4. Warranty 1 year

Please advise me which is your priority of these

I planning to get MBP 2.4 Ghz, so graphic card is 256 and 3mb cache, will it overload or only partially offload to GPU ?

MacBook Pro ~ HELP ~!

Dear Mac Pro users,

I just read from Mac web site that Macbook Pro comes with 2.6ghz D2C processor but still running on santa rossa platform , should i get this laptop? I am thinking of since penryn platform processor is avaiable december 07 and probably the new Macbook pro is going to launch at Mac Expo January 08, should i wait for the penryn processor ? the speed of the processor 45nm and compulsory upgrade of graphic card - 8600GTM can't fit in penryn platform (also probably slimer design) makes me think that i should wait for that ... but i need a new laptop ~! so anyone know more rumours about the penryn base MacBook Pro ?

The new price of 2.6ghz is unknown since Malaysia is respective slow on updating news from Apple Inc or the price of 2.2 and 2.4ghz; but good to know they have already got the new MacBook and price.
