Najib called Anwar twice on election night

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s ousted former premier Najib Razak was ”totally shattered” the night he lost the general election and called his jailed rival Anwar Ibrahim twice for advice on what he should do, Anwar said on Thursday.

Najib was handed a shocking election loss last week which ended the dominance of the Barisan Nasional coalition that has ruled Malaysia for more than six decades.

BN’s defeat in the May 9 polls was attributed to rising anger over corruption and an unlikely alliance struck between 92-year-old Mahathir Mohamad and his former rival, Anwar, who got together to oust the scandal-tainted Najib.

Anwar, who was pardoned and released from his five-year jail term for sodomy on Wednesday, said he had received two calls from Najib.

“When he called on the night of the election, I advised him as a friend to concede and move on,” Anwar told Reuters in an interview at his home on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar said he asked Najib to come out with a statement quickly rather than delay and be perceived as trying to scuttle the process.

Najib, however, said nothing despite Mahathir declaring victory a few hours after the counting of the votes began.

At a news conference the next day, Najib said no party had a simple majority and the constitutional monarch would decide who would form the government.

“He was just very evasive ... he refused to concede early,” Anwar said about his discussion on election night.

He said Najib was thinking of what he could do and who he could consult. But Anwar insisted the former-PM did not approach him for a deal in any ”serious manner”.

“Even if he had referred to that (a deal) I would have just ignored ... I was just listening to him,” Anwar said when asked if Najib had offered him a deal to shift allegiance.

“After the second call he was totally shattered,” he said.

Najib could not immediately be reached for comment.

“In a close contest between two coalitions it is not unusual for a leader of the losing team to try to entice members from the other side,” said Adib Zalkapli, a Kuala Lumpur-based analyst with risk consultancy Vriens & Partners.

Khairy Jamaluddin, the youth and sports minister in Najib’s government, visited Najib at his house on election night and said this week the prime minister had been ”calm” and ”poised”, but that the people around him were ”stunned, shocked and sombre”.

Khairy was not available for comment on Thursday. A spokesman for Khairy declined to comment on Anwar’s description of events on election night.

Najib’s coalition secured only 79 of Malaysia’s 222 parliamentary seats while Anwar’s People’s Justice Party (PKR) won 50 seats. An alliance between the two could have secured Najib’s return to power.

Last year, Najib visited Anwar at a hospital where he was recovering from a shoulder surgery. The meeting sparked rumours that the two leaders may strike up an agreement to join forces against Mahathir, although this was quickly dismissed by Anwar’s team.

Mahathir, who was sworn in as leader last Thursday, secured a royal pardon for Anwar, and has promised to step aside for his friend-turned-foe-turned-ally to become prime minister.

The relationship between these two giants of Malaysian politics is a saga that has spanned three decades.

Anwar said it had been accepted that he would be the next prime minister after Mahathir steps down, but he wanted to ensure a smooth transition.

“Mahathir has been in power for just a week so it’s not proper to talk about an immediate transition. So let him just continue,” Anwar said. He did not give a time frame for this move.

Anwar was Mahathir’s deputy in the 1990s, but fell out with his mentor during the 1997-99 Asian financial crisis.

He was eventually sacked from the ruling party and founded the Reformasi (Reform) movement, challenging Mahathir’s government. Within weeks, he was arrested and jailed on disputed charges of sodomy and corruption.

After being freed in 2004, Anwar was jailed a second time for sodomy in 2015, when Najib was in power.

Both times, he and his supporters said the charges were politically motivated.

Mahathir was perfect as prime minister right now as the new government goes about dismantling the obsolete and corrupt system put in place by the long-ruling United Malay National Organisation (UMNO)-led coalition, Anwar said.

UMNO’s race-based politics and patronage system has been slammed by its critics and blamed for the bulging civil service and weak institutions like the judiciary.

“Probably he seems to be the right man...I am a bit more moderate and have a softer image,” Anwar said.

“Because of how I suffered, I always think how any decision would cause sufferings to those affected. So I’m a bit more considerate...and that may not be good in these times when we have to make sure the elements of the old regime do not resurface.” Anwar and his party has faced a protracted struggle to gain power due to electoral systems and government institutions working in favour of the ruling party.

He said the old regime had been dismantled, but the new government could not assume it would retain the level of support and euphoria seen in the last week.

“From my discussion with the PM (Mahathir) this morning, that seems to be the sentiment ... we will have to deliver,” he said.

“I have given that message. We don’t want UMNO 2.0.”

Kicap from The Star

Japan Train Co Apologies 25 second leave earlier

Six Chinese guys made it off the Titanic alive, and 24 hours later were written out of the story. That wasn’t an accident. That was deliberate. It’s something that the culture of the time made happen.

Eight Chinese men were among the 2,200 people on board the RMS Titanic. Six survived its sinking and were rescued, but disappeared soon afterwards. A new documentary looks at their lives and what happened when they reached the US

The Titanic leaves Southampton on her ill-fated maiden
How six Chinese men survived the Titanic disaster, and the racist US federal law that ensured their obscurity – a story told only now
Eight Chinese men were among the 2,200 people on board the RMS Titanic. Six survived its sinking and were rescued, but disappeared soon afterwards. A new documentary looks at their lives and what happened when they reached the US

In the early hours of April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic – the “unsinkable” British passenger ship – hit an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York, taking more than 1,500 of its 2,200 passengers and crew down with it.

Eight Chinese passengers were on board, a fact little known until now. British documentary maker Arthur Jones thought it odd that little was known of their stories, and set about making a film about the lives of the Chinese passengers, six of whom survived before vanishing from history books.

His film, The Six, will be released later this year (a trailer for the documentary came out in June last year and went viral on Chinese social networking site Weibo).

“Of the 700 survivors of the Titanic disaster, the six Chinese men never told their stories. Why were they ignored?” Jones asks from Shanghai, where his production company LP Films is based.

“The global press loved and continues to love the Titanic story, chronicling every little detail, right down to the size of the ashtrays in second class. But nothing was reported about the Chinese passengers,” he says. The Chinese were the largest group of non-European or North American passengers on the luxury ship.

“Who were they, why were they on board and what happened to them after the disaster? And how did so many get on a lifeboat?” Jones asks.

To answer these questions, Jones follows historian and frequent collaborator Steven Schwankert to uncover the lost stories of the men: Lee Bing, Fang Lang, Chang Chip, Ah Lam, Chung Foo and Ling Hee. He says the two believed to have perished in the disaster were Lee Ling and Len Lam.

Jones says a social media campaign to help track down information about the six was hugely successful.

“Thousands reached out, so I launched whoarethesix.com to get more information from people, asking if they had any information about relatives who might have been on board.”

What they found was that the eight men had worked on cargo ships travelling between China and Europe, and were probably bound for the US to start a new life.

They boarded the Titanic in Southampton on a single ticket that listed eight names – common practice for third-class passengers. Four survived by boarding the last lifeboat, one was rescued from another lifeboat, and the sixth was found floating on wreckage – a piece of wood, most likely a door.

Instead, the men were sent to an immigration station on Ellis Island, where they boarded a ship and sailed into one big mystery, disappearing from public view within 24 hours.

“Other survivors were welcomed to the US with open arms. But these six were given no support and [were] widely mocked in the press,” Jones says. After that the men were largely forgotten about, and if their story was touched on in the press, it was to say they did something dishonourable.

“Rumours swirled that they dressed as women, or pushed children away to get on lifeboats or hid like stowaways in the lifeboats. But we found they didn’t hide or dress as women – they all had valid tickets and there is no evidence of them taking seats from children and women.”

While there is little information online, some websites say two of the men were from Hong Kong. Jones says it’s most likely all eight hailed from Taishan in Guangdong province, but visited Hong Kong.

Jones says the research for the film took them to the US, Canada, Britain and China, as well as Hong Kong, where some descendants were located.

They traced a son of one survivor to the US state of Wisconsin; other clues took them to a remote village in Guangzhou. Jones says the research was littered with obstacles.

“Chinese genealogy is notoriously difficult, particularly in English-language documents such as shipping records, where names are often inconsistently transcribed,” says Jones.

However, there was a surprising number of documents which did survive in archives around the world, and which add an unexpected side story about the Chinese diaspora in the early 20th century, he says.

“Six Chinese guys made it off the Titanic alive, and 24 hours later were written out of the story. That wasn’t an accident. That was deliberate. It’s something that the culture of the time made happen.”

Kicap satu : China Selatan Pagi Post (SCMP)

She consistently works out to keep her body fit, and is a star athlete at her school. She grew up playing tennis with her father, and is a multi-trophy winner of the 1,500-meter run at her school. An insider revealed, “[May Lo] takes a jog almost everyday at the Happy Valley Clubhouse, and sometimes she’d bring her daughter along. They’re very close. Sometimes she’d also bring her younger daughter. It’s been a while since I last saw Jacky playing tennis, though.”

Perhaps influenced by her parents, Zoe also earned a modeling job for a business that promoted physical exercise.

Zoe did catch the paparazzi’s interest in the past. In 2013, it was revealed that Zoe got severely homesick when she was studying in the United Kingdom, and her parents had no other choice but to bring her back home. Zoe is currently studying at Harrow International School Hong Kong, a prestigious British international boarding school in Tuen Mun.

The development also features a stream with a bridge over it, basketball and badminton courts, and even a stage for hosting traditional operas.

However, although the homes have been ready to move into since the end of last year, they remain unoccupied because of squabbling between villagers over who should get one, or even two.

The report did not say how the properties had initially been allocated, but Chen was quoted as saying that he based the number required on a 2013 census, which said there were 190 households in the village.

Despite there being an oversupply of almost 70 homes, in the years that followed the announcement of the plan, more and more people came forward staking claims to them, with several villagers saying they needed more than one to accommodate their growing families.

The villagers’ reaction to his magnanimous gesture left Chen disheartened.

“As soon as I went back to the village, everyone started making all kinds of demands,” he said. “So I don’t go back any more.”

The report said he has not been back to Guanhu for two years.

In an earlier report, Chen was quoted as saying that as well as building the villas, he would also plant lychee orchards and a large pig farm close to the development to create more than 100 jobs for the community.

The businessman and benefactor even said that the meat processing company he owned would buy the pigs reared on the farm, guaranteeing a market for them.

“Within four years, the villagers’ average income will be 200,000 yuan a year, so they won’t have to worry about houses or their children’s education,” he said.

The report said that the village committee will hold a meeting of all residents in a bid to find a way forward for the project.

Kicap from : SCMP
