More Than 2,500 M’sians Attend S’pore Career Fair

Johor recently became the venue for the first-ever Singapore career fair aimed at Malaysians, drawing an overwhelming response from job seekers.

The fair, hosted by 200 Singaporean employers, offered around 300 job opportunities, primarily in the service industry.

This sector included various roles such as chefs, kitchen helpers, butchers, pastry chefs, bakers, tea brewers, café supervisors, and waiters in Chinese restaurants, breakfast joints, cafes, bars, vegetarian eateries, and Japanese and Korean restaurants.

Other job types included office work, warehouse roles, factory jobs, sales assistants, beauty and nail services, technicians, hotel staff, clerical roles, and more.

The attendees included a diverse group of job seekers from various states such as Penang and Perak, all united by the prospect of better employment opportunities in Singapore.

One of the main attractions of the fair was the lucrative salary package, with service industry roles starting from 2,000 SGD (approximately RM7,000).

During a press conference, Chua Jian Boon, special officer to Johor Chief Minister shared that according to the National Statistics Department’s data, Johor’s unemployment rate has decreased to 2.4% for the second quarter of 2023.

“With a total population of 4.1 million, Johor boasts 1.88 million employed individuals, an increase of 30,000 from the previous year’s 1.85 million,” he added.

This high salary range, combined with the strong Singapore dollar, presented a compelling opportunity for many, leading to a significant turnout of over 2500 people by midday.

Malay-Muslim woman models for Victoria's Secret, sparks debate on social media

A Malaysian model has just become the first Malay-Muslim to star in a Victoria's Secret advertising campaign, but not everyone is happy about it.

Taking to Instagram on July 2, Nia Atasha teased about modelling for the lingerie brand.

"I can't keep this a secret anymore. Something exciting is coming really soon," the 26-year-old said.

In an interview with Malaysian media outlet Eh!Malaysia, Nia shared her excitement of being a face of Victoria's Secret.

"It's an honour. This is a big opportunity and I've always had a dream since I started modelling [to be in an] ad campaign for Victoria's Secret," she said.

"I'm still processing everything and currently in pinch me mode. Teenage Nia wouldn't believe this," Nia wrote in an Instagram post.

Several netizens let comments on her post, congratulating the model for making history.

Others, however, were not too happy about a Malay-Muslim modelling for a lingerie brand, reported Mashable.

"She will regret it later," one of them said, while another criticised Nia for showing too much skin in public.

Meanwhile, several netizens urged those "who have nothing good to say" to "keep quiet".
