A simple brushed metal mod

I'm sure all of us here love the look of our iPhones - 3G or otherwise. The glossy chrome bezel look spectacular out of the box. To maintain the same elegant look, most of us here have been over-zealously protecting it. But alas, these scratches are close to impossible to avoid. My chrome bezel had its fair share of scratches too. Honestly, it wasn't too bad but that evening i was bored. So i decided to give this simple mod a go.

Of course this mod is nothing new. We've seen the same mod many years ago on the first iPod. But no one seems to talk about it here and i thought, hey why not share this with the community? This simple guide was done based on the actual process i went through. And as always, do it at your own risk.

So, here are what you guys need:
- Scotch-Brite™ Power Sponge (any brand would just do actually)
- Electrical tape (or anything similar)
- An iPhone, of course!

1. First up, use the electrical tape to cover the area (eg: back cover and screen) around the chrome bezel while leaving the chrome bezel itself exposed (obviously!). This to make sure other parts of the phone will not be damaged in the process.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

[attachmentid=640408]

2. When everything is all well and taped up, use the rough side of the sponge and start brushing. Don't be afraid to apply some pressure when you're doing so. I don't have my own image for this part, so i took this from some where:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

[attachmentid=640418]

TIPS: Make sure you have a steady hand when you brush. Give it a long, consistent and straight brush. The result will be marvelous.

Repeat the process for all sides. Be more careful when it comes to the edges. I realized that the edges are the hardest part to give the bezel a consistent brush.

3. And.....we're done! Simple? You bet it is.

Here are some of my own Before & After photos:

Before

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

[attachmentid=640436]
Look at the scratches and swirls

[attachmentid=640438]
More scratches on the bezel

After

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

[attachmentid=640439]
Tadaaaaaa~

[attachmentid=640442]
Another close-up

Sorry for the lack of photos. It is quite difficult to capture the details with my ancient digicam. But you get the idea. There are several good photos available here. There is also a video tutorial available here should you need more detailed explanations.

I actually prefer the look of the chrome bezel now. Sure it isn't glossy anymore, but it is still as elegant in my opinion. Finger prints on the bezel aren't as visible as before and scratches can hardly be seen now. The verdict? I am absolutely happy with it.

Hope you guys like this simple guide. Adios.

What's next after a degree?

Hello all,

Being a fresh grad and having almost no real working experience (my part timers don't count), I am seriously wondering what a Computer Science grad can do? I've gone thru a few threads here and collected some really useful information. Here are some of the industries and specializations that I think i could venture into with a degree in Computer Science. In brackets are the examples of the companies that offer such services/business solutions. Note that the list below may not be correct and definitely far from being a complete one:

* Technology Consultation (Accenture)
* Technology Audit (The Big 4 - PwC, Deloitte, E&Y, KPMG)
* SAP (DKSH)
* Technical Helpdesk (HP, etc.)
* Programming (Silverlake, etc.)

As of now, the list is sorted according to my personal preference. I am more inclined to do field jobs than desk jobs. I am a technical person but jobs like helpdesk operator and programming really not my cup of tea. I prefer meeting clients and to have the opportunity to be based at different locations.

I really do need more options, suggestions and opinions and I deeply appreciate the help given.

I would appreciate if you guys (the more experienced ones especially) could help me rectify whatever mistakes there are in the list and contribute to it. Contributions in any kind is good - a more specific job title, job description, names of companies, so on and so forth. I would update accordingly. This list may even be useful for future grads. Thanks for all the help.

iBuilder

Not exactly a new piece of news but nonetheless worth mentioning. iBuiler - the app for your windows to customize your own firmware. What does this mean? It means we can now restore our iPhones without needing us to reinstall every single applications and apply every settings again. What an ease!

Quoted from the source page, ModMyiPhone.com

QUOTE

iBuilder, a nifty new project by rotem25, allows you to select from a large list of items for your iPhone, and create a package which can then be added to your internalPackages in iPwnage and used to create a custom firmware for your iPhone.

You can then use iTunes to simply restore your iPhone to the new firmware, with all your favorite apps, sources, or packages already in there. Not too bad...

And a snapshot:

Buying a new rig

I'm planning of a new rig soon. Here's how it would look like:

Intel C2D E4500 2.2 Ghz
ABIT IP35-E (Intel P35 Chipset)
Corsair TwinX XMS PC800 2GB
XFX nVidia 8800GTS 640Mb
WD 250Gb HDD
ASUS DVD+RW
Cooler Master Real Power 450W

And my current machine:

AMD Athlon X2 3800+ 2.0Ghz
Gigabyte M57SLI-S4
Mushkin PC667 1GB x 2
XFX nVidia 7900GS
WD 250Gb HDD
ASUS DVD+RW
Cooler Master Extreme Power 460W

I have some concerns:
1. How much performance increase will the new Intel CPU gives me over my current AMD?
2. Any idea if the new mobo (ABIT IP35-E) is a good in overclocking and in general? I know i'll lose SLI but i guess that's fine since I've never had plan to go SLI.
3. Can the PSU (Cooler Master Real Power 450W) sustain the new setup sustain the number of devices given that I'll overclock the CPU and graphics card?

Thanks to all that drop their 2 cents =) Cheers!

Hey all,

I've installed in my mate's PC Windows Vista Ultimate a fortnight ago and surprisingly enough i don't have to install any of his drivers off his CDs and Windows have got most of this drivers pre-installed. After running an update, all the missing drivers in the beginning have been found and installed as well.

Now, the question is... are those drivers packaged in Windows update the latest one? Or i could find a newer (and better?) ones if i download them manually from the net? I'm planning to get Vista on my own machine now.

I'm particularly concern with my graphic card driver (XFX 7900GS) as i would want the best driver for it and overclock it later. Shall i download it manually and then it's tweaking tool or just update the Windows and only download the tweaking tool (nTune, for example) later?

Anyway, does anyone know what is the latest driver for nVidia 7-series card for Windows Vista? I don't mind whether it is WHQL or not...

Bunch of thanks, lads!

Problematic Controller

Hey there all gamers,

I have problems trying to connect my wireless controller to my console. All the four green lights on the controller were blinking. What could be wrong? One thing to note though, the controller i was using to connect to this console was actually a pre-packaged controller with my another 360 (yea, i have two). Does that matter actually? I have no problem playing with the wired controller.

Thanks all.

Hey folks,

The rumoured launch date of the Apple iPhone in the US is at 11th June 2007. The supposed launch date in Asia is late 2008. And, i don't like waiting

From information i gathered, the phone is locked to Cingular, unfortunately. Do you guys know whether this phone's SIM could be unlocked so i could use it here in Malaysia? Or mmm, any direction you could point me to for more information?

Loads of thanks guys.

360 vs PC

Hey folks,

There are enough endless debates and discussions about PS 3 vs Xbox 360.

So wot i would wanna know from you people is wot do u think the outcome gonna be when the Xbox 360 is pitted against a top-of-the-line PC? Which gonna fares better? Hmm, say the PC is well armed with 2gb or maybe 4gb of RAM, the best graphics card out there ( 8800 GTX?) in SLI mode and a top notch C2D processor. And say the games gonna be in Vista and that of course in dx10 as well. So which do u think gonna be a better gaming machine (maybe in terms of frame rate and how the graphics look like)? Let me hear your verdicts.

And oh by the way, do u guys think the power of 360 have been fully tapped? Gears of War looked awesome i don't know if it could be pushed any further.

Can this be fixed?

Hey people,

My 360 keep crashing every 5 minutes or so into a game. It doesnt show 3 ROD, though. I posted the some pix of the crash so u guys can have better idea of what i'm saying:

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/zc_squash/al...quash/my_photos

After it crashed, none of the buttons on the controller were responsive, including the the Xbox Guide button. It happened to all my games, all my movie DVDs. I tried playing a clip off the HDD (for about 6-7minutes) and it works ok.

any idea what is wrong?
