When I subscribe to the streamyx combo wifi@home, I got this free wireless modem (Riger DB108-WL). I didn't bother trying it since I already have a D-link wireless modem running. However, two days back, there was lightning when I was at work. Due to my careless mistake (or wasn't bothered) of not disconnecting the telephone wire to the modem, my D-link wireless modem was strike by lightning... along with a lightning surge protector, phone, network card and adsl splitter

Luckly enough, I remember that I had this free modem! However, upon connecting it and opening the router page, I was shock! Where are all the settings commonly available on wireless modem?!?! The default wireless setting is WEP. WEP???

Later I found out that there are alot of hidden settings. The login name and password provided in the guide was actually a user account (not admin account), hence having limited configuration settings. I guess TM did not want us to mess around with the settings.

I would just like to share with you guys on how to increase the security of your Riger DB108-WL wireless modem. Do it at ur own risk! Some user have reported problem when changing the setting, thus make sure u know how to undo the settings just in case it causes problem.

1. Log-in to router using admin account (http://192.168.1.1)
Username: tmadmin
Password: tmadmin

2. Goto Wireless > Basic
a. Change the SSID to any prefered ID.
b. Save/Apply.

Using the default SSID by TM will let the whole world know that you are using a TM supplied wireless modem (eg. Riger DB108-WL) and hence easier for hackers to identify what modem you are using and try to exploit any known vulnerabilities.

3. Goto Wireless > Security
a. Change "Network Authentication" to WPA2-PSK.

b. Key in the "WPA Pre-Shared Key".
Use combination of alphabet, number and symbols for a good key as u would use for any password. (i.e 10wy@tdotn3t^_^ )
Remember this key as you will need to key-in on every wireless devices (laptop, handphone, etc.) trying to connect to this network.

Note: Older devices might not support WPA2. If this is the case, use WPA-PSK instead.

c. Select "AES" for the "WPA Encryption"

So why not use the default WEP encryption? WEP is the earliest encryption used for wireless router. This is the weakest encryption and is known to be easily exploited with easily available hacking tool. I won't be explaining in detail about this as it has been discuss countless of time on the internet. d. Save/Apply.

4. Change the router login password for tmadmin and tmuser

a. Management > Access Control > Password
Change the password for tmadmin and tmuser.

Remember the password. You will need it when logging into the router page in future.

b. Save/Apply.

5. Finally "Save/Reboot"

In my opinion, the above wireless security setting provides the most basic security which should have been the default setting in the first place. There are many more methods to secure your wireless which you can easily find out from the internet. No protection method is 100% safe. However using multiple combination methods makes it more difficult/time consuming for hacking.
