MAB Outreach Care Programme

The idea of the MAB Outreach Care Programme is to utilize the available voluntary manpower resources as a means to reach out to the blind in order to meet their needs or provide them with services. It is felt that through this programme, MAB could do the following:

Tap the voluntary manpower resources in the community in a more effective and organized manner
Utilize voluntary manpower where it would not be so expedient to employ paid personnel
Promote awareness among the public regarding MAB and the blind
Reach out to more blind persons through the help of volunteers, thereby saving costs for MAB which would otherwise be incurred if paid personnel were employed
Develop voluntary manpower into a useful resource for the benefit of MAB and the blind
The objectives of this programme are as follows:

To augment and supplement the services being provided by MAB
To enable more blind persons to be served at minimal cost to MAB
To provide opportunities for the community at large to reach out to the blind
To organize activities that would enable the blind and the sighted to get to know one another better
Operations:

A volunteer group will be set up under the MAB Outreach Care Programme. The programme will serve not only the MAB Welfare Unit but other units and sections as well depending on the suitability of the volunteers
In order to enable the volunteers to establish closer links and to feel involved with MAB, a committee will be elected among the volunteers to help run the programme and organise activities
Blind persons are also welcome to register as volunteers if they are able and want to contribute to the programme by providing services or imparting knowledge and skills
An effort will be made to recognise volunteers and their services to MAB.

There will be two types of volunteers:

Long-Term Volunteers:

These will be volunteers who intend to serve MAB for at least one year and they should register with MAB by completing and faxing or emailing the Volunteer Application Form.

Short-Term Volunteers:

These will be volunteers who are interested in providing services for just a short period of time or just for the immediate project or activity. Examples of such volunteers will include inter-actors and school students. These short-term volunteers do not need to fill in the application form.
However, after having served for at least one year, they could register as long-term volunteers.

Kindly contact 03-22722677 ext. 121 if you would like further clarification or information on Outreach Care Programme.
[attachmentid=569091]

Brightest Young Minds - Malaysia?

Is anyone out there interested in this?

Quoting this from EducateDeviate:

QUOTE

I just came back from 5 days of the Brightest Young Minds summit in Sydney. The general idea of the summit is to get motivated and passionate young people together to learn about creating initiatives, while also developing actual workable projects to be pitched to potential sponsors.

Brightest Young Minds

It started in South Africa and it’s now that country’s most prestigious and well-known youth-based development initiative. It recently arrived in Australia and within the two years has created a lot of good.

I love the idea and I think it should be more widely available. I was wondering if people were interested in doing a BYM in Malaysia.

While there are people trying to encourage young people to form initiatives, such as BarCamp and Young Entrepreneur summits, there isn’t really any clear support and education system that’s comprehensive. Also, information on actually STARTING and getting legal/financial support for your project is pretty low. There are plenty of youngsters with ideas…just no idea how to get them off the ground.

Having 100 other energetic young people, plus the support and knowledge of people in their field (we had Hugh Evans, who is pretty much THE MAN when it comes to youth development in Australia) would go very far in getting these ideas into reality. There would also be actual opportunities for delegates to create and develop those ideas before they leave - thereby avoiding the common youth conference problem where people are so motivated to crate change during the conference, but afterwards their energy drops and nothing gets done.

To get BYM in Malaysia we need to know the following:

    * Legal aspects of using the BYM name and concept - is there some sort of “franchise kit”?
    * Finding and recruiting young people to be part of BYM(M) 1
    * Partnerships and sponsorships with companies and organizations
    * Convincing people that BYM as a structure can work in Malaysia
    * Getting BYM(M) off the ground and sustainable
    * Creating a team of people interested in getting involved with BYM(M) behind the scenes
    * Connecting BYM(M) to BYMs in SA and Australia
    * Timelines - when do we start work, and when do we have our first BYM(M)?

If you’re interested, or know other people who are, leave me a comment or message.

Global Environment Centre Volunteer Programme

Making a difference. That’s what being a volunteer at GEC is all about. Whether you’re helping train someone, raise funds, or simply helping to write a thank you letter, you can be sure that you ARE making a difference for the environment.
Concern over the environment is growing in Malaysia and so is GEC. We are now expanding our organisation by establishing a Volunteer Programme. Through this programme, we not only hope to become more efficient as an organisation, but we hope to engage you, as young adults, to be more actively involved in environmental conservation and develop your skills and character.

The Programme
The GEC Volunteer Programme is unlike any other. Here, we aren’t just looking for your help, but we want to nurture your skills and help you develop yourselves further through our programme.

It is a platform for young adults who are genuinely concerned for the environment, and who have skills and are willing to contribute their time and effort for environmental conservation. In return, volunteers will gain opportunities to learn, discover, experience and share their lives with others and the environment.

Short-term Objectives

To engage in work that is beneficial to the environment and community

Long-term Objectives

To grow to be a self-sustaining entity
To engage people of all ages in environmental conservation
To be a leading volunteer group in educating the public about the environment

Benefits of being a Volunteer with GEC

Being a volunteer will develop and enhance many aspects of yourself and provide you a better understanding of the world.

Some of the opportunities you will gain from being a volunteer with GEC:

* Inside knowledge about environmental issues facing Malaysia today
* Hands-on training experience in various fields
* Leadership skills
* Meet new people
* Make new friends
* Networking opportunities with people in the environment field
* Widen your perspectives
* Once in a lifetime experiences
* Develop new skills

Areas of Work and Brief Description

Photography

* Capture the moments at GEC events and workshops for our collection
* Contribute unique photos on environmental issues on a regular basis

Writing and Media Relations

* Write pre-event and post-event press releases
* Pitch feature stories to the daily newspapers or magazines
* Pitch publicity ideas to TV and radio stations

Training

* Assist in GEC training events, workshops and other events

Event Management

* Assist in the planning, preparation and implementation of events and workshops

Advertising & Design

* Conceptualise ideas and create designs for educational materials, exhibition materials and other needs

IT & Website Development and Maintenance

* Assist in website development and maintenance for all GEC websites
* Assist in internal office computer maintenance

Administration and organization

* Assist GEC staff in administrative matters and office organization
* Take charge of managing GEC’s database

Individual/Group Research and Projects

* Undertake your very own research activities or surveys to gain valuable baseline information or public opinion about any environmental issue

Group Fund Raising and Campaign Activities

* Work with as a group of volunteers to develop a campaign to raise funds for GEC’s River Care Fund
* Work with other volunteers to develop campaigns to raise awareness about environmental issues

Who we’re looking for

A GEC Volunteer should:

* Have a strong desire to contribute back to the environment and to society through any means
* Be willing to learn and contribute innovative ideas for GEC’s projects and campaigns
* Want to take the extra step and initiative in everything they do
* Be enthusiastic and motivated to work hard
* Have a fun, friendly and honest character about them

[attachmentid=550565]
