https://www.thestar.com.my/opinion/letters/...ndemic-together

QUOTE

The nationwide vaccination drive is heading towards 400,000 jabs a day in the next few weeks, with the opening of more mega centres and deployment of mobile units as major boosters.

All the ministries involved are intensifying every possible way and means to fight the pandemic clusters which are still dominating. This is one of the many uplifting news carried in almost all the dailies and news portals.

Another positive piece of news is that Singapore might likely accept the MySejahtera app as a vaccination passport soon, as said by National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme coordinating minister, YB Khairy Jamaluddin. Kuala Lumpur, he said, was finalising talks with Singapore while negotiations with other countries were still underway for the recognition of the vaccine passport. Complementing those news was the Education Ministry's recruitment of some 18,702 teachers to fill shortages in several states, including Sabah and Sarawak.

Topping up the many positive stories was the RM30bil which the government still has to distribute to the rakyat and businesses in the form of cash aid and direct assistance soon as possible as said by Finance Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. All these inspiring news items are contributing extra features and strategies as outlined in the recently announced National Recovery Plan by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

With the ramping up of the vaccination drive, the government’s goal of getting 80% of the population vaccinated before year end is nearing closer, making other cinches outlined under the Plan, including safety of our public health system and opening of more economic and social sectors, as workable and achievable, too.

The World Health Organization’s Our World In Data yesterday showed that Malaysia is way ahead of other countries in Asean in terms of total population who have received at least one vaccine dose, away from Laos, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar.

All these prove that the many health measures being implemented by the Perikatan Nasional-led government in handling the pandemic, have borne fruit. The removal of bureaucratic barriers to expedite the vaccination process through outreach programmes to reach all corners of the country to increase vaccination coverage, the deployment of mobile units and others, are too good to be true but all these are being intensely implemented. Vaccination is the only exit strategy to contain the pandemic in this country, and this is what exactly the Perikatan government is doing.

All these, in a way, indicate that Parliament should only reconvene as soon as it is practical and only safe to do so, including taking into account the state of vaccination in this country. The strengths and stability of the government-of-the-day have made the targets it set to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic, seem workable and feasible within the phases of transitions that have been worked out for.

Continued bashing of the present government and all these cynical political manouvres by those quarters jockeying for power should not in any way distract public’s focus and attention from giving their unwavering support to the government’s Recovery Plan.

Do not let political stunts aggravate the various lapses in compliance with the standard operating procedures and other health protocols that we have been committing, time and again. Instead of fighting Covid-19, we are fighting each other by these quarters who are out pursuing their personal political goals. The pandemic has been around for more than one year and such discordance will only make it more difficult for us to fight this battle.

The bulk of new Covid-19 clusters continues to be detected at workplaces and many others. Let there be no cluster if Parliament is reconvened. Even without a parliamentary session, it was reported recently that several Parliament staff had come down with the pandemic. And during a sitting at the end of last year held ahead of the 2021 Budget, concerns over risk of exposure to the virus had shortened its daily sitting when a staff member was infected.

Even before issues on convening of Parliament became the highlight of today’s news, Muhyiddin had said it clearly that Parliament could reconvene either in September or October if daily infections showed a decline. He gave his commitment to uphold the parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy, but some people just can’t seem to wait!

We must not give in to any parties who purposely create restlessness among us to the extent of hindering and disrupting the Perikatan government’s main task to handle the pandemic. As responsible citizens, we should remain true to the principles of logic and reason because being rational will help us survive and sail through this difficult, challenging period.

Azril Mohamad

Bangi.

Kerajaan PN handling pandemic very good

https://www.thestar.com.my/opinion/letters/...gainst-covid-19

We have all heard the axiom that it is unwise to change horses midstream, yet it appears that some career politicians in Malaysia are pinning their ambitions on proving their lack of wisdom with this particular strategy.

Even as the government has successfully reduced the R0 value of Covid-19’s infection rate in Malaysia to 0.97 and provided a first round of vaccination to a greater percentage of the population than any country in the region (with an expected 300, 000 vaccinations to be carried out per day by August); opposition parties are still clamouring to unseat the government

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin recently announced plans for a Social Protection Database that will enhance and expand existing safety net measures for the most vulnerable Malaysians; something no previous government has attempted - including Pakatan Harapan - of which some of the remnants are now seeking to override the popular will and replace the current administration.

We are in the middle of a national crisis and the Perikatan Nasional government has been masterfully navigating every challenge as they arise.

No one would claim that it has been smooth sailing as we have been battered by the Fujiwhara effect of the pandemic colliding with the economic storms of the movement control order and the global downturn, just like every other country.

But amidst these multiple, unparalleled catastrophes, Muhyiddin’s leadership has been steady, responsive, and compassionate. The government has neither exploited lockdowns to silence opposition nor to impose harsh austerity measures, as we have seen elsewhere.

Quite the contrary, the Prime Minister has endured relentless attacks by political opponents even as he has released more financial aid to the public than any regional counterpart.

It is no wonder that despite organised efforts on social media to deride the government, Tan Sri Muhyiddin continues to enjoy majority support among Malaysian citizens, and the respect of world leaders.

We are leading Asean in vaccinations and will likely be the first in the region to achieve herd immunity. Our people have persevered through every incarnation of the MCO with abundant support from the government. And our most needy and vulnerable citizens are provided unprecedented protections that will further advance the Prime Minister’s vision of “Shared Prosperity”.

By any metric, the Perikatan government has acquitted itself remarkably well. Vying for leadership and position during a crisis instead of standing in solidarity with the people and the government does not indicate sincere concern for the national interest.

Lives have been saved under this government, and countless more will be. Thanks to of Muhyiddin’s pragmatic and effective steering of our nation, we are well on our way to overcoming the pandemic and setting our economy back on course towards even greater growth and development.

History will salute those who stand together with the rakyat and their leader during these tumultuous times, and those who sought to use this crisis to pursue personal ambitions will only be mentioned with an asterisk.

Azril Mohd Amin, Bangi.

Foreign students ditch dream of work in the UK

International students are abandoning their dreams of working in the U.K. as the British government's stringent immigration policies restrict their ability to find jobs.
Since mid-2012, harsh visa rules have slashed the number of foreign students who are able to secure jobs after graduation, down by roughly 88% from 2012 to 2013.
Previously, students could take two years to find a job after graduation, but current rules give them just four months. Consequently, only a few thousand international grads are able to secure jobs each year, compared to tens of thousands in earlier years.
And now, new policies under consideration could tighten the screws even further by setting higher minimum salaries for international graduates seeking new jobs. These rules are specifically aimed to restrict students from outside the European Union.
"They're trying to cut every connection and every possibility for [an international] student here to go and work," said Josephine Goube, a London-based spokeswoman at Migreat, a website that provides immigration advice.
Neil Carberry, a director at the Confederation of British Industry, says government restrictions on foreign students have gone "too far." He argues that it's important to keep skilled foreign workers in the country.
Related: Here's what happened when these U.S. colleges ditched SAT scores
Foreign grads from British universities have the odds stacked against them, since just 27,282 companies have permission to hire these candidates, out of a pool of over five million British businesses.
Lilit Mughalyan, a 25-year-old Armenian MBA student at the University of Oxford, said it's difficult to find a company that is willing to sponsor her work visa.
"I believe any student graduating from Oxford with an MBA can get a job, any job. But the problem is that you need to get into a big company and the company needs to be willing to sponsor you," she said, noting that many foreign classmates are also struggling to secure job offers.
The work restrictions have led some rich students to take an alternate route, opting to remain in the U.K. via an investor visa that requires them to invest at least £2 million ($3.1 million) in British stocks and bonds. The latest data from the U.K.'s Migration Advisory Committee shows that 74 foreign students secured investor visas after graduation in 2013, up 48% from the previous year.
Related: The rich are rushing to buy passports
Despite calls to loosen the rules, the government argues it is taking these steps to protect British jobs and British workers.
"We are already seeing the results: since 2010, the majority of the rise in employment -- a record 1,000 jobs every day -- have gone to British nationals," said Prime Minister David Cameron in a prepared speech in June.

http://money.cnn.com/2015/09/08/pf/college...l?iid=obnetwork

Vacant Bathrooms “Too Small” So Parents Let Kid Poo in the Airplane Aisle
There were some stinky flights in China this weekend

Charles Liu Charles Liu, August 17, 2015 5:08pm

Chinese airliners have stepped up security after an arson attack on a Guangzhou-bound flight a few weeks ago, but there’s no security tight enough to stop the stinky scourge of parents letting their kids poo in public on airplanes.

Last Saturday on West Air flight PN6233 from Zhengzhou to Nantong, a post on Weibo showed a child relieving himself in an aisle of the plane (pictured above). Fortunately for the passengers, it took place towards the end of the flight as it was descending into Nantong.

And then just yesterday, a Weibo post showed a child defecating on board Shenzhen Airlines flight ZH9709 from Nanjing to Guangzhou. This one, though, might be worse: after a passenger complained saying both bathrooms were vacant, the parents said the bathrooms were too small anyway so they used the back of the plane because it had more room.

That could be the most infuriating part of the story, except for this: the plane hadn’t taken off yet.

Shitty Source

MCA urges Chinese youths to join police force

The MCA is urging Chinese youths to grab the opportunity to join the police force with the new requirement imposed by the government in an effort to raise the number of Chinese policemen.

Federal Territories MCA Publicity Bureau chairman Lau Chin Kok said joining the police was considered a "secure" occupation and Chinese youths would be able to enjoy a pension after retirement.

The police force was endeavouring to double up the number of Chinese policemen to three times from the current figure, or 5,000 officers, to serve the people and country.

"It is an unhealthy situation to have only 1.78% of Chinese in the police force, which is lower than the number of Indian officers (3.6%)," he said in a statement today.

Beginning March 3, the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) decided to lower the Chinese recruitment criteria.

Applicants who posses the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia with a pass in Bahasa Malaysia (BM) and two credits and four passes in other subjects, may now apply for the job, for those who failed the BM paper, they may re-sit the examination in three years.

The recruitment will end on April 30 and those with the necessary qualifications may submit their applications via the Internet, or at the police stations.

"In the past, many Chinese parents objected to having their children working as police officers because of the occupational risk and the negative image towards the force, such as corruption and abuse of power," he said.

However, with so many Chinese police officers nationwide testifying that it was a job with good prospects, I urge parents to change their perception and encourage their children to join the force, he added.

Lau also said the MCA Youth would hold a briefing on the recruitment this Saturday at 2.30pm at the Wisma MCA. Those interested may bring along a copy of their identity card, birth certificate, and SPM certificate to interact with the recruitment officers and submit their application.

For more information, please contact the MCA Youth secretariat at 03-22033865/3866, the application forms are available online at www.rmp.gov.my and the nearest police station. – Bernama, April 10, 2014.

Sauce

Pls advice, fren bought car on loan under my name

Help! Serious advice needed here.

I have this friend who bought a car with loan under my name. Normally he just pay the installment to bank directly. Now he has delayed payments for at least 2 months and I already got bank's notice to settle before they repossess the car. I know it will be difficult to have him churn out the payment, but I decided not to be the victim for his financial disaster anymore as last year I already helped him pay over rm 4k with little hope of getting back the money.

I know it is bad decision to let him bought the car under my name in the first place but please let that be discussion for another day.

Problem is I don't even know where he stays now although I know he is in Rawang. I have some ideas in my mind on how to settle this mess in a more gentle way but if in worst case, what can I do? Can I make police report? Or apply court order to have him surrender the car?

1Malaysia changed to 1Melayu

Umno veteran Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir today suggested that the 1Malaysia slogan introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak be changed to 1Melayu.

The reason behind the switch, according to Musa, is because the non-Malays had stabbed the party in the back causing the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) to lose many seats in the 13th general election.

“We do not have to say 1Malaysia anymore. Just change it to 1Melayu,” the Penang Umno veteran told delegates at the Umno general assembly today.

“Why should we help them? We help them, they stab our backs,” said Musa, who is also the Penang Umno communications secretary.

He urged the government to stop their campaign or hold programmes to garner the support of non-Malays since there have been no results.

“We have been busy preparing dinners, programmes, for what?” he asked to loud cheers from the other delegates at the assembly.

SOS RENDANG

Kaji pemberian BR1M

CILI SOS

Tunku Aziz dah berinsaf

QUOTE

Give Najib a chance, says Tunku Aziz

KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — Former DAP vice-chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim has made an impassioned call to the people to support the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Give Najib the chance and time to see his transformation programmes currently being implemented, come into fruition, he said.

Tunku Abdul Aziz who quit the party on Monday to defend his stand against holding the Bersih 3.0 demonstration on April 28, repeated his view that the transformation programmes were good for the country.

“What the prime minister has done now is the right thing and we need to support him,” he said, adding that Najib’s transformation process for change would certainly take time.

“By definition, the process will take a little bit of time,” he said while stressing that this included Najib’s administration on improving the democratic process of the country.

Asked for his views on whether Najib’s leadership would receive the support of the people in the coming general election with the changes he has made, Tunku Abdul Aziz said: “I am not a political analyst and I do not know how to speculate. But the process will take time, given the chance. “

“In the past, we have been screaming that the government did not do this and that, but now, the government is listening, that is why I say, there was no need to protest... (now) they want Bersih 4.0... what else do they want?,” he asked.

He said the protest was held to attract the attention of the people. (The aim of a protest is to draw attention and raise awareness).

“Do you think the government did not see what the people wanted? In the assembly, 98 per cent protested to change the law but there were two more per cent... they have other agenda... to create a riot,” he noted.

Tunku Abdul Aziz also referred to the action of certain opposition political parties, which seized the protest from the non-governmental organiser to create a riot, so much so that several policemen and members of the public were injured.

Asked for his opinion on Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Tunku Abdul Aziz said, since he became a columnist for The New Sunday Times, he did not agree with his style of politics and that he had written an article, “Stop the theatrics, Anwar, let Malaysians get on with their life”.

The article touched on rumours that the federal government would fall to the opposition on September 16, 2008, with a large number of BN members of parliament jumping to join the opposition.

“Hopping is not my game... I despise people who do that... we contest under, let’s say, Umno banner and later hop to Anwar... I do not agree. If you want to jump, resign and hold a by-election to contest on an independent ticket, then we will see who will win,” he said.

Tunku Abdul Aziz, a corporate figure and activist against corruption, was the vice-chairman of Transparency International.

He assisted in setting up Transparency International-Malaysia, joined DAP after the March 2008 general election and was appointed vice-chairman and later made senator in July 2009.

However, his term as a member of the senate representing DAP was not extended by the party leadership after he made open statements against Bersih, which was supported by his party and Pakatan Rakyat.

On whether he would review his decision to leave DAP, Tunku Abdul Aziz made it clear the decision was final.

“(As) I have said (before), if I get out, I am out... end of story,” he said.

When asked whether he received any comments or feedback from other Malay DAP members after deciding to leave the party, he replied in the negative.

On former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s comments that he was surprised that Tunku Abdul Aziz joined the DAP, he said he joined the party in his struggle against corruption and promote integrity in the government and business sectors.

He had served in the corporate sector and was a Bank Negara adviser before becoming an activist, said Tunku Abdul Aziz.

“I joined DAP, not to become a politician... if I had wanted to become a politician, I would have joined after college... if I wanted to join Umno, I would have done so, a long time ago... I thought I am better without being politically linked... non-partisan,” he said.

He said at the moment, he would take a long rest, shut off his telephone and spend time breeding ornamental fish. — Bernama

SOS

Semalam rain storm, today solar storm

A strong solar storm is expected to hit Earth shortly, and experts warn it could disrupt power grids, satellite navigations systems and plane routes.

The storm - the largest in five years - will unleash a torrent of charged particles between 06:00 GMT and 10:00 GMT, US weather specialists say.

They say it was triggered by a pair of massive solar flares earlier this week.

It means there is a good chance of seeing the northern lights at higher latitudes, if the skies are clear.

The effects will be most intense in polar regions, and aircraft may be advised to change their routings to avoid these areas.

In the UK, the best chance to see them will be on Thursday night, the British Geological Survey says.
Complex network

"It's hitting us right in the nose," said Joseph Kunches, an expert at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa).

He described the storm as the Sun's version of Super Tuesday - in a reference to the US Republican primaries and caucuses in 10 states.

"Space weather has gotten very interesting over the past 24 hours," Mr Kunches added.

The charged particles are expected to hit Earth at 4,000,000 mph (6,400,000 km/h), and Noaa predicts the storm will last until Friday morning.

Images of from the Sun's region where the flares happened show a complex network of sunspots indicating a large amount of stored magnetic energy.

Other solar magnetic storms have been observed in recent decades.

One huge solar flare in 1972 cut off long-distance telephone communication in the US state of Illinois.

sosej

Ladyboy flight attendants

QUOTE

(Reuters) - A new Thai airline is hiring transsexual ladyboys as flight attendants, aiming at a unique identity to set itself apart from competitors as it sets out for the skies. Known as "katoeys" or "ladyboys," transgenders and transsexuals have greater visibility in Thailand than in many other nations, holding mainstream jobs in a variety of fields. They are especially common in cosmetics shops or health stores, which almost always have a ladyboy shop assistant. PC Air, a charter airline set to start operations on Asian routes in April, originally planned only to hire male and female flight attendants. But it changed its mind after receiving more than 100 job applications from transvestites and transsexuals. Four were chosen, along with 19 female and 7 male flight attendants. "When I knew that I got this job, I burst into tears because I'm very happy," said 24-year-old Chayathisa Nakmai. "I had sent many applications to different airlines." The airline said that the qualifications for the ladyboy flight attendants were the same as for female flight attendants, with the additional provisos that they be like women in how they walk and talk, and have a feminine voice and the right attitude. Though there is very little discrimination against ladyboys in Thailand, they are not officially recognised as women and their identification cards will always say "male." While the airline strives for equality, PC Air president Peter Chan, who chooses the transsexual cabin crew himself, said he needed to spend longer with interviews for such applicants. "For male flight attendants, if I don't want to hire them, it's because of their attitude or their characters, like the way they walk and smile. For female flight attendants, if they have no patience and their character does not qualify, we won't hire them," he added. "For transsexuals, we can't just spend 5 or 10 minutes with them, we have to spend the whole day with them to make sure they have feminine characters." The airline says it may hire more flight attendants from the "third gender" in the future since the Department of Civil Aviation has no objections. Though excited by the opportunity, the transsexual flight attendants said they were aware they needed to prove themselves. "People will keep their eyes on us... There will be more pressure," said Dissanai Chitpraphachin, 23, who was crowned as Thailand's most beautiful transvestite in 2007. "We have to prepare ourselves more than the women." The airline is initially set to fly to South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and China.

sos pondan

Guan Eng raps Umno for Penang protest

Guan Eng raps Umno for Penang protest
By Clara Chooi
July 03, 2011

GEORGE TOWN, July 3 — As protests escalate against the federal government’s nationwide pre-Bersih rally clampdown, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng moved today to condemn a violent anti-state government demonstration at Penang’s capital here on Friday.

The protest, said to have been staged by Umno and Perkasa members, had reportedly resulted in the arrest of at least seven people, including Umno Senator Ezam Mohamad Nor, and the assault of two reporters.

In a statement today, Lim, who was the target of the over 300 protestors who gathered first at the historic Masjid Kapitan Keling after Friday prayers, slammed Penang Umno chief Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman for denying Umno’s involvement.

The Penang Chief Minister pointed out that Ezam’s arrest had proven Zainal Abidin’s “blatant and open lie” and told the politician to seek public forgiveness and apologise.

“Video footage of the illegal assembly and the arrest of Umno Senator Ezam by the police for illegal assembly proves that Umno is a coward for trying to deny its involvement and is a classic reminder of the Malay proverb, ‘baling batu sembunyi tangan’ (hiding the hand that threw the stone),” he said.

Lim also dared Zainal Abidin to stand by his statement by denying Exam’s Umno membership and the party’s appointment of the former PKR man as a Senator.

He claimed that during the protest, Ezam had threatened to stage more protests to pressure him into resigning ahead of the next general election.

“Where is Umno’s respect for democracy and my mandate as the rightful elected Chief Minister of Penang?” he said.

Lim urged the police to take action against those responsible for the attacks on two pressmen who were taking photographs of the protest, saying that failure to do so would confirm the government’s practice of double standards.

“Both reporters have lodged police reports and provided evidence of their assailants and their vehicles,” he noted.

He accused English daily New Straits Times of being complicit in Umno’s “cowardice and lies” by failing to publish news of Ezam’s arrest and the attacks on the reporters.

“No mention was made by NST of two reporters being attacked by Umno nor that the demonstrators had blocked traffic in the middle of the Penang Bridge causing a 10km-long traffic jam.

“Penang Umno and Umno Youth state leaders were also present at that violent, illegal assembly. Seven others were arrested with Ezam including a Perkasa Penang leader Mohd Rizuad Mohd Azudin,” he reported.

Lim said the joint protest proved Umno’s close links with Malay rights group Perkasa, often criticised by the opposition as a racist organisation.

“Gerakan, MCA or MIC must fully explain why they still support an Umno that works closely with a racist organisation like Perkasa that regards our Chinese women ancestors as prostitutes and Indians as beggars and dogs,” he said.

According to media reports, protestors had called for Lim’s resignation due to his support of the now-outlawed Bersih 2.0 coalition. During their march, they reportedly accused Lim of being a “communist” and the “most racist leader in the history of the country.”

SOS
