Ethereum-killer Polkadot launches parachain auctions, DOT price rallies 25%

Following unanimous approval from the Polkadot network’s on-chain governance council members, the blockchain is now anticipating the debut parachain auctions. The launch marks a significant achievement as it realizes the final core technical element of its whitepaper.
Polkadot reaches major milestone since inception

The proposal for the first parachain auctions on Polkadot was approved by its community, as the network fulfills its goal of multichain interoperability. The layer-1 project aimed to enable blockchain networks to be interoperable with one another and accomplished its goal as members voted to approve the proposal to launch its first parachain auctions.

Parachains are blockchains that run alongside the main network, which are also tethered to the Polkadot Relay Chain.

The protocol, co-founded by Gavin Wood has long anticipating parachain auctions, which will commence in November. The first auction is expected to be held on November 11 after the Polkadot Council voted in favor of Motion 118.

The parachain auctions will continue at a rate of one per week for five consecutive weeks until the final auction set on December 9. Polkadot auctions will be held in transit for the duration of one month, while the initial bidding period will last for two days.

Twitter CEO and self-professed Bitcoin (BTC) maximalist Jack Dorsey is not giving Ether (ETH) fans an inch. In his latest offhand remark about the market’s second-largest cryptocurrency, Dorsey downplayed the platform’s potential to single-handedly shake up the status quo in Big Tech:

Dorsey’s comment followed an online discussion of the usefulness of a full-blown integration of nonfungible tokens (NFT) into Twitter, which Twitter user Seyitaylor argued would be more to the benefit of Ethereum than to the social media site.

Dorsey agreed that such a move would be more consequential for the Ethereum ecosystem than for his own platform but added, “Every account on Twitter being able to link to a Lightning wallet however…”

Despite Twitter’s previous dabbles in the world of NFTs – and Dorsey’s own use of the technology to raise money for charity – Dorsey has remained a staunch Bitcoin advocate, much to the frustration of both Ether diehards and less sectarian crypto fans.

When one Twitter user responded to Dorsey’s comments, pushing him to explain, “Why the ETH hate then if there’s room for more than one piece to the puzzle?” Dorsey’s rejoinder was that “focus on one thing isn’t hate of the others. I’ve made my concerns known about others in comparison to Bitcoin. Key ones are founding principles, security, and centralization.”

In another Twitter thread, Garry Tan probed the “mystery” of Dorsey’s single-minded preoccupation with Bitcoin, which Timothy Kim proposed was the veteran crypto’s promise to serve as “sound money,” which he claimed was “critical,” “especially for the globally underprivileged.” Dorsey joined the discussion to agree, asserting that he’s in Bitcoin “to help fix the money,” adding he was “not trolling.”

In yet another thread circling the same theme, Dorsey rebuffed claims he was intentionally throwing shade at Ethereum and clarified that for him, “decentralization isn’t an end goal [...] it’s just one method of fixing the money.” Elsewhere on Twitter, Dorsey said that while he agrees with the spirit of NFTs, his advocacy of Lightning in this context had nothing to do with them but rather with “enabl[ing] a currency for the internet.”

This has been a long-time motto of Dorsey’s, who has repeatedly argued that Bitcoin will be the sole currency of the internet since at least 2018. Unlike other Bitcoin fans who concede there could one day be a “flippening” of the two top coins’ fortunes, he has remained, as far as is publicly known, reluctant to invest in the altcoin to this day.

Despite cooler – but still high – inflation data in July and the U.S. Senate’s passage of a $1 trillion infrastructure bill that could impose certain taxes and restrictions on the cryptocurrency sector, bitcoin’s price climbed to $46,502 on Wednesday, its highest level since mid-May, with. The cryptocurrency was trading at $46,433 as of press time, up 2.45% on the day.

“The market isn’t expecting the language in the Senate bill to progress as is through the House and into law, which I also agree with,” Jeffery Wang, head of Americas at crypto services Amber Group, wrote to CoinDesk in an email. “I think once all is said and done, we will have more palatable rules for the crypto industry.”

The selling pressure around GBP/USD remains unabated, as the bears seek a test of the 1.3800 level amid resurfacing Brexit concerns and persistent US dollar’s strength.

The greenback continues to draw bids alongside the Treasury yields amid expectations of an earlier tapering by the Fed, in light of Friday’s stronger than expected US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) data.

The US economy seems to be closing in on the Fed’s ‘substantial progress’ benchmark, calling for monetary policy normalization sooner than previously thought. Adding to the hawkish bets, Fed officials Rosengren and Bostic also back early taper.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Brexit concerns have returned to the table amid the migrant crisis. The former Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage slammed France and the EU for failing to “lift a finger” to prevent the dangerous cross-channel migrant crisis.

4 Things to Consider When Choosing a Cardano ADA Stake Pool

Pool Performance

This is the most important metric to judge. Your ROS can take a huge hit if the pool you have delegated to is missing the slots they have been scheduled for. Pools only receive rewards for the blocks they mint on the blockchain. Poorly maintained pools will tend to miss opportunities to mint blocks, causing the whole rewards paid out to speakers to decrease.

A minor consideration is a hardware a pool runs on. If the server has insufficient resources, they will get caught up with maintaining the tip of the blockchain (or even crash) and miss out on minting blocks. Additionally, if a pool runs on a fanatical server at the operator’s house, it's vulnerable to power outages. Even if the server runs on an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), their local internet service provider equipment can go down, rendering the pool inoperable for a period of time. Large cloud computing providers, like Microsoft Azure, AWS, and DigitalOcean, provide servers in multiple availability zones in order that even within the event of widespread power outages, pools can remain operational if they have backups in another zone.

Overall, poor performance can be a tough metric to judge. As explained within the previous section, a little pool can have wild swings within the number of blocks they create. So if a pool had a low ROS during an epoch, it doesn't necessarily mean it's performing poorly. you must evaluate a pool’s performance over many consecutive epochs to induce a feel for their overall performance. This makes a pool’s transparency important, as we’ll explain later.

Pool Pledge

Pledge is the amount of ADA the pool operator(s) have staked in their own pool. This effectively let's delegators know how invested the operators are within the success of the pool. Pledged ADA earns rewards similar to if it were staked, so if a pool goes down, its operator will not only miss out on collecting fees for the missed blocks, but they'll also lose rewards on their pledge.

Pool Size

Pool rewards need to be considered as averaged over time. A smaller pool will divide bigger shares of the reward amongst its stakes (since there are fewer of them), but they'll statistically get chosen to provide fewer blocks. A larger pool will find more blocks but payout smaller rewards. As long as the larger pool isn’t saturated, the rewards will be similar over time. Also, since it's a random selection, some pools may have good or bad luck “streaks”. Let’s say that the Cardano network targets about 4.6% rewards (Return on Stake, or ROS). Large pools will tend to pay out more consistent rewards, as there's lower variance in the number of blocks they mint per epoch. Small pools will have rather more variation in the number of blocks they produce per epoch, then the rewards will vary significantly. Across three epochs, a little pool may payout 1%, 9%, and 4% ROS, but over time the rewards will average out to 4.6%.

This is important to remember when observing pool performance over a brief period of time. A little pool may get “lucky” on their first few epochs and obtain selected for several more slots than average. they'll appear to pay out a much higher ROS than other pools. However, after several epochs, this will even out to the expected ROS.
