Punter hoping to strike big

GEORGE TOWN: A herd of wild boars has become an attraction of sorts at the foothills outside Penang Botanic Gardens, drawing crowds that include lottery punters after dark.

While curious people just want the chance to observe them, punters hope to lay eyes on them and strike big with the number 509 that represents the creature in the chifa book.

Used by punters, the chifa book or Cheng Jee Tor (Thousand-Number Guide in Hokkien), is a booklet of numbers from 000 to 999, each accompanied by a picture of an item or act said to represent them.

Punters who catch sight of the boars will add another number to 509 based on their inspirations and buy 4D.

One of them, who wished to be known only as Lee, said he was told the beasts would bring luck to those who see them.

He purposely laid out fruits to coax the wild boars out of the forest and onto the lawn near the parking area of the botanic gardens.

A check by The Star last week found a small group of excited people waiting for the wild boars in pitch darkness at 9pm.

Most of them admitted they were waiting to see how many boars would come out.

An hour later, six to eight wild boars squeezed through a gap at the bottom of the chain link fence for the food or vegetables brought by the onlookers.

The herd seemed young, with five juveniles still bearing their light brown lateral stripes.

Only two or three sows were observed and the alpha boar was not seen.

The animals did not mind camera flashes or torchlights but scampered back into the forest for a few minutes when the headlights of cars swept across them.

According to locals and avid hikers, it was common to see wild boars there and the creatures never harmed anyone.

Penang Botanic Gardens Department director Mohd Azwa Shah Ahmad said they had reported the wild boar-watching to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

He said the department had secured a quotation to upgrade the fence near Penang Rifle Club to stop the creatures from coming out of the forest.

“The wild boars are always spotted at night but nobody has ever complained.

“Anyway, we will put up signboards to warn people not to feed the wild boars and monkeys here,” he said.

KJN murder trial

SHAH ALAM: The Kim Jong-nam murder trial has been set for 23 days starting Oct 2.

High Court judge Justice Azmi Ariffin set the date after a case management in open court here Friday.

He said plea from both the accused will be recorded on the first day of the trial.

The accused, Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, were present in the court. Both wore baju kurung.

Muhamad Iskandar said the prosecution would be calling 30 to 40 witnesses, including 10 experts, to testify.

Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan, 29, have been charged with the murder of Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, at KLIA2 on Feb 13.

They face the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

The court complex was in a lock down since 6.30am as armed policemen stood guard at strategic locations.

Amidst the heavy security, firemen were called to the court complex after a group of people were trapped in an elevator for about 40 minutes. A man inside the elevator fainted.

All were eventually freed and the man was given medical attention.

Suspected cable thief survives

MIRI: A middle-aged man sustained burns all over his body after he tried to steal copper cables from an electricity pole along the main road of Jalan Trusan near Lawas town on Monday.

He was found trapped between the power lines in the 11pm incident which also caused a blackout in Trusan village.

The Lawas Fire and Rescue Department said it was alerted by passers-by who had seen the man dangling from the 15m-high pole.

The man was still alive but badly burnt in the mishap.

He was rushed to the Lawas Hospital and police have been notified about the incident.

Electricity was restored after repairs were carried out by Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation technicians.

RM1 houses for relatives of the sick, domestic abuse victims

For those truly in need of temporary housing for whatever reason, community activist Kuan Chee Heng hopes to provide the solution with his RM1 houses, where it costs only RM1 to stay there each night.

Launched today, the two houses in Taman Puchong Utama were initially meant to provide temporary housing to relatives of hospitalised patients who come from afar to take care of their family members.

“We’ve readied two houses, for anyone from far who need to be with their relative at the hospital, so they can ask to stay at the RM1 house,” Kuan said.

However, he added, they are also open to accepting anyone in need of temporary housing, such as domestic abuse victims.

There is already a family staying in one of the houses, he said, whose house burned down last night...
