Protons more expensive in Malaysia than overseas
PETALING JAYA: Saudi Arabians pay less for Malaysian-made Proton cars than we do, an independent think-tank revealed.

Citing the Finance Ministry, the Research for Social Advancement (REFSA) said that Saudis only needed to fork out at the most RM43,570 for a brand-new Proton Waja, Gen-2 or a Persona between 2008 and 2009.

Malaysians, on the other hand, were expected to cough up RM52,999 for a “standard Waja or Persona”, and RM52,988 for a Gen-2 in 2011.

“The fact that local cars are cheaper overseas makes little sense,” REFSA said in a statement.

“Proton cars are locally assembled, and utilise a good amount of locally-made spare parts. These Malaysian cars are not levied import tax, so what is impregnating the price tags?”

A quick search on the Internet showed that Saudi Arabia was not the only country selling Protons cheaper than what Malaysia offered.

According to Australian vehicle listing website RedBook (www.redbook.com.au), the cheapest 2011 Gen-2 model (GCM, 1.6 Manual) was priced at AU$15,990 or RM51,727.

The cheapest automatic Gen-2 1.6 M-Line, on the other hand, according to Proton’s website (www.proton-edar.com), was priced at RM54,538. Manual Gen-2 1.6 H-Lines were priced at RM57,038 onwards.

Those prices, according to the national car website, were just prices in Peninsular Malaysia. Protons sold in Sabah and Sarawak were found to be at least RM2,000 more.

Citing Malaysian Automative Association (MAA) president Aisha Ahmad, REFSA said Malaysians were paying more for their Protons because of painfully high taxes.

“The burden comes from excise duty and sales tax, which are a minimum of 65% and 10% respectively… Aisha said in January 2011 that every car sold in Malaysia had been levied 65% to 105% excise duties, not including 10% sales tax,” the think-tank said.

This, it added, meant that Malaysians could expect to fork out a minimum of RM15,000 every time they bought a RM35,000 car.

In comparison, Thailand’s excise duty, REFSA said, was a mere 35%.

According to a Malaysian Insider report, Malaysians were paying an estimated RM6 billion through excise taxes on cars every year. Quoting the MAA, the report said that the government had imposed these taxes because it “needed the money”.

http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/2012/01/1...-than-overseas/

Harmful bacteria in 1 Malaysia foods

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 — At least one Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia product was found to contain E.coli bacteria while nine others fell short of standards set by the Food and Regulations Acts, a Pakatan Rakyat lawmaker claimed today.

A test of the products from two certified labs detected the presence of E. Coli and a higher than permitted amount of coliform in the 1 Malaysia-branded fresh milk, DAP publicity chief Tony Pua told reporters outside one of the outlets in Bandar Tun Razak today.

Strains of E.coli can cause food poisoning if ingested by humans.

Following the discovery, Pua today demanded the Ministry of Health inspect the 1 Malaysia-branded products for compliance with the existing food laws.

“If someone fell sick (from the 1 Malaysia products), can an ordinary citizen take the (relevant) ministries to court?” he asked.

But the Petaling Jaya Utara MP added that the product in question was no longer available since October 23.

Other products tested and investigated are the outlet’s bottled oyster sauce, pineapple jam, ice-cream, condensed milk, canned milk creamer, canned ghee, canned sardine, and canned curry chicken.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak launched the first of many Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia thrift shops at the Kelana Jaya LRT station in Petaling Jaya in June in response to rising inflation, which hit a two-year high of 3.5 per cent that same month.

Nurul Izzah (right) gestures during a press conference outside the Kedai Rakyat in Bandar Tun Razak, November 11, 2011. — Picture by Choo Choy May
There are now three such shops in the Klang Valley.

The shops, operated by hypermarket giant Mydin, offer 250 generic products like rice, oil, flour, bread, eggs, milk powder and diapers, at prices 30 to 40 per cent lower than market rates, as well as branded goods.

Najib said more Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia will be set up in other locations similar to the 1 Malaysia clinics his administration has established in states like Sabah and Sarawak.

Pua later revealed another test that found the outlet’s bottled oyster sauce to contain only flavouring and no natural oyster extract. It also fell short of the required 2.5 per cent protein content.

PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar pointed out that Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) communications director Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman was previously reported as saying he encouraged the public to buy from Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia because the “prices are way cheaper and they sell quality products”.

Today, she said the various ministries and agencies that endorsed the 1 Malaysia products should inspect the items sold to take responsibility for their backing.

“We can support Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia, but follow your own laws. That’s all we ask.

“Please review, take this seriously. This is not a political issue,” the Lembah Pantai MP said.

Pua also urged the government to be even-handed and conduct checks on Kedai Rakyat stores, just as it did on other companies.

“You must be fair. You go to all the other mom and pop shops to check their products and when they commit an offence, you recall (the products) and shut down their store. Every company should be equal before the law.

“Do your job, don’t sleep,” Pua said to the Minister of Health Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

PAS Central Committee member Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, who was also present, said that while he respects and appreciates efforts to keep the prices low, there should not be any compromise towards health and food quality.

“And those who visit these stores are those from the low-income group. Can we sacrifice them like that... giving them sub-standard products?” he asked.

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysi...malaysia-goods/

Chef Wan’s son cook up his CV for MasterChef

UPDATED @ 08:09:53 AM 09-11-2011
By Debra Chong
November 09, 2011

A screenshot shows Chef Riz’s Masterchef Malaysia profile page hosted by Astro.com.my.
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 — Mohd Nadzri Redzuawan, popularly known as Chef Riz and a judge on MasterChef Malaysia, is in hot soup.

In his MasterChef profile on the Astro Ria website, he claimed to have worked at two famous restaurants in the US, but checks with both of them have revealed otherwise.

The son of local celebrity chef Redzuawan Ismail, better known as Chef Wan, claimed he worked as “chef de cuisine” — also called a head chef — at the world famous Mario Batali’s flagship Italian restaurant Babbo in New York when he was only 22.

Batali is an American chef who is as famous for his signature shorts and orange Crocs as his string of restaurants in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Singapore and has starred in the “Iron Chef America” TV series.

“These claims are untrue. Mr Nadzri has never worked at Babbo,” Mario Batali’s communications director, Pamela Lewy, said in an email reply yesterday.

When contacted, Chef Riz insisted he did work at Babbo.

“I was there for a year, from January 2005 to December 2005,” he said.

Now 29, he also told The Malaysian Insider he worked as “sous-chef” at Le Bernardin under chef Eric Ripert — of the Asian Food Channel’s “Avec Eric” fame — before returning home to star in several TV programmes.

A sous-chef is the second in command of the kitchen and directly assists the head chef.

“I took a break, a short holiday before joining Le Bernardin for two years. I was there from March 2006 to July 2008,” he said to The Malaysian Insider in a phone interview yesterday.
A publicist for Le Bernardin, Helen Medvedovsky, told The Malaysian Insider this morning after checking with the Michelin three star-rated restaurant that: “We looked into this and found out this man never worked at Le Bernardin.”

When it was pointed out that Batali’s spokesman had refuted the claims, Chef Riz said: “Aiyoh! That’s weird. I’ll be checking with them.”

MasterChef Malaysia is a cooking show like the other MasterChef shows in other countries, such as USA, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia , Greece, India, Sweden, Indonesia and Great Britain.

The show’s first season on Astro Ria began its run on October 22. Shooting for the series is scheduled to continue until the end of the year.

Obedient Wives Club publishes explicit sex book

Obedient Wives Club publishes explicit sex book
By Debra Chong
October 12, 2011

Previously, the club’s vice-president, Dr Rohaya Mohamad (right), had provoked an outcry for advising women to behave like “a first-class whore” while in the company of their husbands. — file pic
KOTA BARU, Oct 12 — A Muslim man can have sex with all his wives at the same time, according to a controversial new book on Islamic sex by the Obedient Wives Club (OWC).

Titillatingly-titled “Seks Islam, perangi Yahudi untk kembalikan seks Islam kepada dunia [Islamic sex, fighting Jews to return Islamic sex to the world]”, the explicit book aims to guide Muslim brides on how to pleasure their husbands in bed.

In its foreword, the pro-polygamy OWC said its studies showed women only gave their husbands 10 per cent of what the men desired of their wives’ bodies.

Malay-language daily, Berita Harian, reported today the Malay-Muslim community was upset the book featured on its front cover the polygamous leader of the outlawed Al-Arqam religious sect, Asaari Muhammad, and also objected to its extremely graphic visuals.

An extract on the back cover reads, in Bahasa Malaysia: “Selaku pemimpin roh, kebolehan yang Allah izinkan kepada mereka ialah boleh serentak dengan semua isteri-isteri melakukan hubungan jenis. Manakala kalau isteripun orang roh, lagilah hebat. Ke mana-mana terbang untuk atau sambil melakukan hubungan sulit itu dalam keadaan lebih nikmat dan lebih ringan dibanding dengan perlakuan yang menggunakan fizikal. Untuk itulah Abuya sedang proses isteri-isterinya ke arah roh.”

In English: “As a spiritual leader, Allah has granted him the ability to have simultaneous sex with all his wives. And if the wife is spiritual, the sex is greater. They can fly anywhere for sex, it is more enjoyable and easier compared to physical sex. For that reason, Abuya was processing his wives towards the spiritual.”

The paper noted that explicit sex details littered the book’s 115 pages, and cited as another example chapter eight which deals with “how sex becomes worship”.

“Kemuncak cinta kita ialah celah kangkang. Tangan, kaki dan segalanya terdorong kuat untuk menuju ke situ [The peak of our love is the cleft in between. Hands, feet and everything are strongly driven there].”

The sex book has not been banned but Kelantan mufti, Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad, has stepped into the fray to play down the emphasis of Islam on sex.

“The Al-Quran explains the ‘wife clothes the husband and you (the husband) clothes the wife. ‘Your wife is the field and therefore come to your field’,” Berita Harian quoted him saying today.

“Islam touches on sex in a civilised, polite and non-lewd manner. So we should not detail it in such a way as to give a negative impression,” Mohamad Shukri added, saying sex in Islam was described in symbolic terms.

This is the second time the OWC has hit the headlines. Previously, the club’s vice-president, Dr Rohaya Mohamad, provoked an outcry from women’s rights groups and Islamic religious authorities for advising women to behave like “a first-class whore” while in the company of their husbands if they wanted their marriages to succeed.
Chelsea complain over anti-Semitism

Chelsea complain over anti-Semitism during Malaysia game
July 28, 2011

Benayoun was given a torrid time by Malaysian fans. — Reuters pic
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — English Premier League football team Chelsea have filed an official complaint with Malaysian football authorities over what they say were anti-Semitic taunts targeted at the club’s Israeli midfielder, Yossi Benayoun, during their friendly match here last week.

Chelsea’s 1-0 friendly win over the Malaysian Olympic squad last week was overshadowed by boos directed at Benayoun, the first Israeli footballer to have played in Malaysia in recent memory.

The jeering of the captain of the Israeli national team throughout the first half was given wide coverage in the international media, including British tabloid the Daily Mirror and wire services, embarrassing Malaysia, which has tried to project an image of being a moderate Muslim nation.

According to a report in UK daily The Guardian today, Chelsea had initially doubted that the chants were related to Benayoun’s nationality but later probes revealed that anti-Semitism was involved in the crowd abuse.

“Notwithstanding most fans behaving appropriately on the night, we believe Yossi was subjected to anti-Semitic abuse by a number of supporters at the game,” a club spokesman was quoted in The Guardian’s article.

“Such behaviour is offensive, totally unacceptable and has no place in football.”

Benayoun was booed by Malaysian fans whenever he went near the ball during the friendly game at Bukit Jalil last week, and was relentlessly taunted throughout his entire stint during the first half.

Muslim-majority Malaysia is an ardent supporter of Palestine and has no diplomatic ties with Israel.

Muslim politicians have long vied for support from Malays by denouncing what they say is inhumane aggression from Israel towards its neighbour.

The formal complaint by the club now increases the likelihood of sanctions against Malaysia by football’s governing body, Fifa, which has taken a hard stance against racism in the game.

Chelsea won the friendly 1 – 0, with a goal by Didier Drogba.

If Malaysia is sanctioned by Fifa, it would be a major embarassment for a country eager to show it is a model for moderate behaviour.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak has crossed the globe to project such an image since taking office two years ago, most recently to London and the Vatican City — only the second prime minister of Malaysia to visit the leadership of the Catholic Church.

The Umno president has also harped on the need for members and leaders of the world’s major faiths to censure and reject their own extremists and jointly support a “global movement of moderates”.

Former Malaysian FA official Peter Velappan, who was once a general secretary of the Asian Football Confederation, was quoted last week admitting the abuse was regrettable, if hard to prevent. "It is of course unsporting," he said. "This is quite rampant in many of the European countries ... [but] especially in [multiracial] Malaysia we are supposed to set an example."
