Book Reviews

Perhaps there should be a thread where we can write a little about books we have read and would like to recommend/"unrecommend"?

So, feel free to write away!

Please try to include basic information about the book, or a link to Amazon or Wikipedia if you are too lazy to re-type those infos. By that I mean title(duh), author, fiction/non-fiction, genre etc.

I'm lazy now but later on I'll be sure to review some of the books I've read lately.

EDIT: Oh, thought maybe it'll be a good idea to leave a rating at the end too, out of 10 would be nice.

Disabling p2p on home network

Just wondering how to do it?

Am a complete noob on networking so a link to a website that teaches step by step or some kind soul willing to type it out would be greatly appreciated.

Would just blocking the ports alone work? If so, what are the common ports I should start with?

It won't affect my other surfing net and youtube, rapidshare etc right?

Oh if there's an old thread do let me know, I searched but didn't find any useful.

Thanks

EDIT: Mainly want to block torrent. If possible, only torrent, but still allowing others such as ares, limewire.

Gaming on home network

Personal equipment
Firewall used: None on both. Win XP's turned off

Problem details
Problem description: One's a Laptop, normal wireless connection. One's a fairly old desktop, so connected through wireless USB dongle. Both connects to the internet fine, and I can ping one another. But when I try playing DotA, I can't see the other comp regardless of which computer hosted the game.

If the laptop tries connecting to another Laptop with usual wireless network card, there is no problem. Can't remember what router it is but if needed will check.

Any help is appreciated.

MERCY Malaysia

Hi,

I'm thinking about joining MERCY as a volunteer, the website says we have to write in to apply for it, but besides that has provided very little information.

I'm hoping there is a member or volunteer of MERCY here who could shed some light on how is it like to volunteer as well as other aspects such as schedule, how to write the letter of application and maybe share some experience and advise. I am currently a medical student and hence would have quite a tight schedule.

I am a Malaysian citizen and over 18 so I guess I am eligible.

Do share. Thanks.

Wireless compared to wired

I'm currently using jaring wireless and it seems to be extremely slow, dunno if it's jaring or because it is wireless

On average, I'm getting speed like dial up and it is very unstable(cuts off whenever it likes to)

On good sessions, it goes to 10kb/s

So you can pretty much say it is worse than dialup(because of the cut offs)

So I'm just wondering, is it due to the wireless internet, as in if i change it to wired jaring broadband it'll be better, or is it jaring completely

This is because I'm in an area that TMnet does not cover(how stupid u may ask)
So I have no choice, I heard maxis is worse

Some comparison is that on my cousin's Streamyx line, I can use skype smoothly, and download files easily over 20+(which is slower than what is promised, he's on 512 line, but hey! it's better than 5) and now my parents on skype can't hear me and the connection drops after 30s

Please, advise me on this, I'm considering switching to wired, but dunno if theres a difference and dont even know i this area is covered by it
