Hi all,

Couple of friends and I got interview offers for the position of Technical Specialist at Telstra at MidValley. From what we were told, it is a shared services division, so we guess it's something like a NOC or managed services? Required technical skills are primarily Cisco and Juniper networking related. Did some Google-fu and asked around in our social circles but there appears to be not many public information on it (not even in forum.lowyat.net)

We probably can ask the interviewers about the standard questions. I'm opening this thread to get details from ex/current workers at Telstra Mid Valley - experiences on working environment, culture & community would most be welcomed. You may PM me if you wish to keep your anonymity.

HDD not spinning

Hi all,

My 500GB WD Green died. There are no weird clicking sounds prior to this. It just KO-ed suddenly. The drive does not spin when powered up (most of the time). If it does, it will stop after about 10-15s as though no power is being supplied to it. However, the logic board is still warm. Also, BIOS does not detect it.

I have tried :-

i) Swapping SATA/power cables
ii) Plugging it into different PCs

The results are same.

Anyone here experienced this before? What could be the probable cause and troubleshooting I can do to confirm it? Are there any possible solutions too?

The contents are kinda important to me. I am considering sending it to specialists to fix it as a last resort. Anyone here consulted them before? Mind sharing your experiences?

Industrial Training Dilemma

Hi all,

I am a third year Engineering undergraduate studying in a local university and will be undertaking my Industrial Training soon. Due to personal reasons, I would prefer to apply for companies / organizations based in Cyberjaya.

A quick google search managed to give me the list of companies based in Cyberjaya but I have no idea on how to proceed next.

My questions are :
1. Are any specific guideline or tips when applying for a particular company? What criteria(s) should I look out for?

2. Are there any companies in particular which I should avoid / pay more attention to? Speaking in terms of bad environment for trainees, excessive workload, etc.

3. How do I go about the application part? Which action would be better :
i) Calling up their HR dept. and enquire on whether they accept undergraduate trainees.
ii) Write in an enquiry email to their HR dept.?
iii) Send in my application letter (with CV & Support letter) directly?

I'll be coming from the KLSentral LRT, ^ map shows that all i need to do is cross the bridge and walk straight up? Asked around but the closest answer i got is it's somewhere behind 7-Eleven along the main road. Need a better description (how to get there, how far etc). Kinda on a rush so i wanted to make sure first instead of searching for it later. >.<

Hi all,

I have a question, not posting in Tech Support coz it isn't ... dead yet i guess. Lately my PC is lagging horribly especially whenever i plug in my other internal storage drive and run multiple applications. I only have 504MB RAM (yes i know it's very little ) and doing multiple applications before i changed to this motherboard won't lag this bad. Also, i found out that the data transfer rate between drives are very very slow, and it lags as well when i transfer files. Another strange thing is chkdsk is always run on my storage drive whenever i boot up ... I've run some virus/spyware scan, chkdsk, and even plugging both hard disks into other PCs but it only lags on this one.

Just curious, could a faulty motherboard cause this? Since i'm very sure that my drives are clear from any malwares/failure.

Ripples in monitor

I got back today to find ripples on my monitor ... it's not actually ripples, more like you can see layers of alternate 'light' and 'dark'. Tried resetting the power and switching it off a few hours. Also tried lowering the refresh rate to 60Hz ; the 'ripples' are still visible but not as frequent as @ 75Hz ( been using this rate since i bought the monitor...). Don't think it is GC problem as i plugged it into 2 other PCs and i still get the same results ..

Does this mean that my monitor's lifespan is coming to an end? Is it repairable ? If yes, how long will it take?

Btw i don't have any speakers or magnetic source anywhere near the monitor ..

Problem details
First occurence of problem: 2 months back
Problem frequency: Once a few days

Problem description:

I got disconnected from the internet randomly and am unable to re-connect when my other 5 housemates has no problem. Then this message with "limited internet connectivity" pops out in my taskbar. I tried using both the RJ45 and USB cable, can't reconnect unless i reset the modem's power.

PC does not boot

I woke up this morning to find my PC auto-restart and it hanged at the 'detecting drive' screen.

So, naturally i tried to restart it but i got a problem , there was no beep sound ( beep sound is related to BIOS checking right ... ? ) no matter how many times i reset it. Then i unplugged every peripheral from my casing and restart, got a long beep.

After unplugging this and that i think i found the problem, it's my graphics card ( using ATi Radeon 9200 ). When i plugged the monitor cable into it :

i. monitor shows "no signal"
ii. PC won't boot up

Tried to re-install the driver but i got some weird error ... Curious, does this mean my graphics card is damaged? Or is it related to any other components?

as per topic, i switched my OS language settings to Japanese and restart my com. Now it's stuck at the loading screen, keep on loading and i've left it for almost 2 hours still can't load Windows ...

first time encountering this problem. i've switched between english and japanese for my OS a few time prior to this but nothign bad happen before.

how do i solve this?

Question regarding Wired Home Networking

Hi there, would like to ask some questions regarding wired home networking. I've been doing some light reading and asking some people but there's somthing that confuse me. If there exist topic(s) with the same question please do redirect me to the appropriate links.

So, for a basic wired home network ; what is needed is a modem ---> router ---> switch ---> users.

If the modem has a built in router, then it can be directly modem ---> switch---> user?

I read somewhere though ( forgot where ) that it is also possible to connect a modem ---> router ---> switch. Er, which means i get another router for the routing and the modem to do the connection ... but if the modem has a built in router function wouldn't that make the router useless? i asked one of my friend about it and he said if use standalone modem and standalone router can get better BW distribution and lessen the processing load ... ( i'm very blur here )

Question is, is there any difference in terms of connection stability/bandwidth distribution/ other aspects for these 2 kind of setup?

Sorry if my questions are not clear enough ... i don't really understand these stuffs pretty well myself .

add-on :
Equipment : Linksys AM300 , Netgear 8-port switch.
ISP : Streamyx 1mbps, to be shared by 6 users.

Are these 2 sufficient to setup the network?
