Applied Mathematics or Statistics

Dear all,

I am going to begin my university studies soon and still undecided which field I hope to major in, applied math or statistics. I am planning to take up a second major in economics.

After researching on this topic online and seeking the opinion of others, I am of the impression that a statistics major is more employable, especially if I further specialize in biostatistics.

On the other hand, as I hope to pursue a second major in econs, some economists feel that a vigorous mathematical training provided by an applied math major would better prepare me for uni econs, especially if I plan to pursue graduate studies. I read that some employers (banks, consultancy firms, etc.) prefer mathematicians over statisticians as the theorems and proofs more emphasized in a math degree helps to train one's logical and problem solving skills, as compared to statistics which places more emphasis on the technical use of math in modelling and data analysis.

However, as I can safely say that in terms of intellect, I am no where near the top 1-2% but i feel that perhaps I am around the top 10-15% of Malaysian students. Hence, I do not know if the so called training to improve my logical and analytical skills provided by a mathematics background would do me any good as these employers would likely only hire the top 5% of students.

On the other hand, as a technical subject, I am sure it would be easier for me to seek gainful employment as a statistician

As for my future career plans, I hope to either venture into academia (lecturer/professor) in hopefully a good uni like NUS, Melbourne or the better unis in the UK, or else go into finance or consultancy. However, if given the chance (scholarship), I would definitely hope to pursue graduate studies in econs in UK or US.

I also plan to try to self study and pass the 9 fundamental acca papers in 4 years before i graduate, to improve my employability as I am planning to use accountancy as a fallback in case the above plans fall through

Would appreciate advice from anyone out there, regardless of your background, profession or what you studied/studying now. Thank you!
