Having a high flying career vs having a 'life'

I came to a realization that, as you progress through life, you could choose either path, and it is mostly sacrificing one for the other:

1) Having a high flying career, but sacrificing other dimensions of life. That means, you could stay focus solely on your career, and recognized by the corporation you work for or if its the case of building your business, being the top earner, and get rewarded with more promotions and money. But you will sacrifice time for family, friends, and other leisure pursuits.

OR

2) Focus on balancing all dimensions of life, that is you try to spend time and energy on family, friends, leisure activities, and career. But you will stay average.

So depending on which path you choose above, you could either put all of your stakes in working 24/7, travel frequently and away from home most of the time with little time spent for other people, or you could either fore go such a 'dangerous' stake, and focus on building a healthy relationships with your family and friends.

Of course my intuition is most people focus on having a balanced life and thus ended up being average in terms of career. And a small minority (mostly men) that will focus solely on being a corporate sellout but went on to become very successful in their career and earnings later on.

Choose your sacrifice, and bear the consequences of your choice. That is, if you focus solely on your careeer, you could make tons of money, but you will realized at some point when you reached the pinnacle of success, that life is much more than just working, OR you could stay as an average earner but will have a healthy support system

So, which path did you choose and why? And if you are the lucky one that managed to have the best of both worlds, perhaps share how? haha

Awek memang mantap dari amoi

Im a chinese guy, dating dengan aweks.

Aweks memang baik hati orangnya. Bersopan-santun, tak ada kisah sangat dengan duit dan status. As long as kerja ok dan stabil, awek dah heppi ni. Kerete pon pakai preve je ok dah. Kadang2 pakai moto, tapi moto sports bike la, sporting sikit. Tapi aweks ok je siap boleh peluk-peluk lagi. Tak ada hal.

Keluar makan pun cincai je. X payah nak fikir sangat. Gi dating kat mcdonalds atau dominos pun ok je.

Yang lebih penting ni, awek badan mantap. Boleh kata lagi baik dari amois. Muka pun cantek. Warna kulit gelap manis. Syok la tengok.

Amoi kalau suruh naik moto terus muka masam. Nak makan pizza tak boleh, makan kfc tak boleh. Nak jugak makan high kelas setiap kali macam sushi atau cafe hipster. Lepas makan, nak minum bubble tea macam bodo kena beratur 1 jam. Pokai aku klau keluar dgn amois.

Awek > amoi

Sekian salam satu malaysia.

Can one succeed in Malaysia if born poor?

Lets say non-bumi, and born with poor parents. Mom's a housewife, dad's a mechanic. Household income RM3k max. His parents never left him with any inheritance. ZERO inheritance.

Let's say la if he got will to suceed and breakout of the poverty cycle. He wants to become millionaire and get pretty wife so bad that he is willng to do what it takes. But one thing is, he very hardworking and intelligent.

From net worth zero to RMx millions in his lifetime.

Will the poor kid have an equal chance to do it or will he likely to fail because he is poor and odds are against him? Even though he is hardworking and intelligent?

I think the keywords here are "non-bumi" and "poor parents".

Jobs that have faster chance to get RM20k/mth?

I come to a realization that Southeast Asia (SEA), particularly Malaysia is different from the rest of the world when it comes to jobs that pay high..and I mean really high..

In SEA, jobs that pay high is very different from the other geographical locations especially among developed countries..

What we traditionally thought of high paying jobs; Law, Accounting, Banking, Medicine, while allowing those practicing it to live comfortably with an above average paycheck, these jobs cannot make a person rich.

Meanwhile, jobs like Oil and Gas pays more than those aforementioned careers above, at least in Malaysia. An oil and gas engineer I spoke to earns around RM30-40k all in (base pay + allowance + miscellaneous) at an early age (say at 30).

If you compare to the previous careers I mentioned, a chartered accountant with ACCA only earns RM8-12k at that similar age. Same goes to lawyers and bankers i suspect.

So as a person living off paycheck to paycheck, what kind of jobs REALLY increases the chance for someone to earn big at an early age, if you exclude those who have successful business.

My list:

- Offshore Oil and Gas engineers
- Pilots
- ...

I can only think of two sadly..

Note: Please dont include successful entrepreneurs, ONLY salaried workers who exchange time and effort for money...

Say for someone who dont have a degree, SPM only, also for someone who has a degree, but instead choose to do MLM sales as corporate job is too slow to climb...

Is Multi Level Marketing (MLM) agent a good job prospect? Companies like Amway for example..sell household products and facial care products..

Can earn a living doing MLM?

Does MLMer get paid EPF?

And why MLM people like to mock 9 to 5 corporate jobs?
DO NOT waste your money on whole life insurance

How true is a claim by financial experts such as Dave Ramsey below about whole life insurance with investment linked plans. He suggested people to go for term life insurance instead...

Dave Ramsey:

"WHY would you pay 100 to 200 dollars extra more per month to build up inside a savings account called "CASH VALUE", so later on when you close your policy, insurance company write you a cheque and give you your savings back...Now why is this bad?"

"Is bad for a multitude of reasons:

1) The rate of return on a typical whole life policy is 1%, like a stupid savings account at a bank. No one builds wealth at 1%...DO NOT treat a whole life insurance with an investment linked plan as an investment tool. Your agent is trying to sell you an investment linked plan that has shit returns, period.

2) Lets say you buy a couple hundred dollars of policies and finally you die and you accummulated 100k in your cash value, but your face value is 200k (Death policy). Insurance only pay 200k, the face value and not the total value (the extra 100k you paid is not returned to you). Apparently, insurance company gets to keep your 100k cash value when you die..

3) You can invest the extra money from every policy in other investment vehicles that can generate more returns, or put inside your EPF account so you are self-insured by the time you are 50 or 60, without the need for an insurance...

Other comments:

Supporting Dave:

QUOTE

Dave is spot on about this. I worked in the Life and Annuity industry for over 25 years in I/T. I have seen how these cash value products are designed, sold and administered. And I can tell you this. Purchasing cash value life insurance is THE WORST financial decision you could ever make for your family. Unfortunately, you can't trust insurance agents to tell you the honest truth about this scam either. They are trained from day one to push cash value life insurance and they make their commissions on the premium they force you to pay. If you mention term insurance, they will tell you 50 ways that it's a bad choice. Well, term is a bad choice for them, not you. They make little if any commission on term insurance. Avoid traditional cash value life insurance!! - jambooguy

QUOTE

That is the problem, people want to buy insurance to "beat" the company... you don't buy car insurance to go out and crash or kill somebody, you don't buy home insurance to set your house on fire. You buy insurance in case something happens!, if you buy life insurance thinking in a way to actually use the insurance no matter what then you started wrong... you buy TERM in case something happens in your productive years when your family depends on you, AND you save as much as you can for retirement in an ACTUAL INVESTMENT PRODUCT.... so instead of putting $1000 dollars a month in Whole Life.... put $100 in TERM for 30 Years and and INVEST/SAVE the other $900 so you won't need insurance when the term is done, because you have the CASH! to put in an annuity or something and RETIRE!... whole life always sounds pretty until you see how much it costs againts term and all the things you can do with the difference- elchamo14

QUOTE

Just put the money in a IRA invest it yourself whole life plans puts money into insurance company pockets by front loading a policy. It's a scam that's why insurance agents push so hard to sell them they make so much money off them. When you get over 59 you can use the money how you like if you want to leave some for your kids or use it for long term care. Most people when they hit 90 their kids don't need the money anyway rather see their parents money be used for them. I'm 49 years old I don't even want a gift from my mother anymore I tell her to bake some cookies for birthdays. If I want to buy something I buy it with my own money.- blastman88888

QUOTE

Hey guys, the idea is to take the money you save and now make sure you put money in an Roth IRA. Remember, life insurance is part of your financial plan. It's not the plan. Buy Term to protect my family for less cost and more coverage. But I also should be investing for my retirement. Worried about needing life insurance at retirement is for the person with no plan of having money and assets accumulated at retirement. -Tony felton

Against Dave:

QUOTE

Such inaccurate information. I am huge fan of Dave but this really grinds my gears. The point of whole life insurance is not to be looked at as an investment product it is an insurance product first and foremost. SOO that being said yes you may pay more for a whole life than a term for the same amount of coverage. But lets say you are 30 years old and buy a whole life you have the rate of a 30 yr old locked in for the rest of your life, so your insured no matter and that price will never go up compared to a term, try renewing your 30 yr term life at 60 and see how that whole life insurance at the rate they were giving you when you were 30 now sees affordable and god forbid you're out of shape or have an illness then you'll really regret it. Secondly YOU CAN BUY A WHOLE LIFE you can pay one lump sum, or pay it off in intervals of 5,10,15, or 20 years (depending on the company you choose) you pay a large amount but your whole life is paid off for the rest of your life and it continues to incur interest. And the amount incurred is always paid out, as long as your with a good company. These are things you should research and not take Angry Daves word and the end all be all word.

QUOTE

Please do your own research people. Every situation is different. Term insurance may be the best option for you but if you want a payout at age 90 it will not work. Life insurance is not for you, it is a gift you leave behind to your loved ones. A combination of permanent and term insurance may be the best solution. You don't have to get all of one or the other. It would be a good idea to use a firm that offers all types of insurance and learn for yourself what solution you are most comfortable with.- Scott L

Sems like most of the comments on youtube agree with Dave Ramsey than against him..

Stay and be contented or leave with a challenge?

I think at some point in our lives, we have to decide whether to quit our current job to join a new competitor/industry. I am currently facing the dilemma, not in monetary terms, but in terms of the learning curve and pressure to perform.

My current situation (Stay):

I work in a medium company, and working here is relatively easy. I am consider above average and people come to me for advise on fixing stuffs. The workload given to me is easy for me but hard for everyone else. People approach me to solve problems that seem relatively easy for me too. I have little headache and best of all I get paid well too. Everything is fine overall.

> I am a valuable asset in a company.
> I have spent 3 years in the company, and total of 10 years in the industry.
> Given another 5-10 years, I would be made director/snr mgt in the company.

The target company (Leave):

My target have always been prestigious firms from the get go. My initial aim was to work in a prestigious firm in the particular sector. Say JPMorgan, Goldman, and Morgan Stanley for finance or Microsoft, Google, Amazon in tech; you get the idea. I was given such opportunity last month.

But the realization soon kicked in and I realized that I am going into a high pressure environment where people are very smart, and many many more are smarter than me. The company also practices "up-or-out" or "perform-or-out policy" where you either perform and get promoted within 3-5 years, or you are fired.

> Pay is much higher, say twice of my current one.
> My title has been downgraded. Currently Manager to Associate and equivalent in the new company.

There is a saying that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I am totally happy with my current state, and I dont wish to change. But joining the new company has always been my dream/goal. Should I stick or move to the new company?

Happy CNY.
In terms of career progression wise in the next 5-10 years, which one command a higher salary? I doubt I'd go far with BNM, especially in such a niche dpt such as supervision.

Both offers currently have roughly the same monetary payouts and benefits.
