New Jakarta Governor reported to Police for saying

Governor Anies Baswedan reported to police for saying ‘pribumi’ during inauguration speech

QUOTE

Following the public uproar over Governor Anies Baswedan’s contentious inauguration speech on Monday, during which he said it’s time the pribumi (a term loosely defined as “native” Indonesian citizens) be masters of their own land again, the governor could find himself in legal trouble after his speech was reported to the police.

Banteng Muda Indonesia (BMI), a youth wing of President Joko Widodo’s political party, PDI-P, reported Anies to the National Police’s Crime Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) and accusing the governor of violating a 1998 Presidential Edict forbidding the use of the word pribumi to classify citizens in political communication.

“Ever since that Presidential Edict was issued, there is no longer a distinction between pribumi and non-pribumi,” said Pahala Sirait, head of BMI Jakarta’s Law Enforcement and Human Rights Department, after his group filed the report to Bareskrim as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

BMI also argued that Anies’ speech was a direct violation of Law no. 40/2008 on the Eradication of Racial and Ethnic Discrimination, which is punishable by up to five years in prison.

When interviewed by reporters on Tuesday, Anies said that his speech, and his use of the word pribumi, was said in context of the Dutch colonization era without elaborating further. This morning, when pressed on the matter again by reporters, both he and Vice Governor Sandiaga Uno refused to comment.

The police have yet to give any statement on whether or not they will follow up on BMI’s report.

One powerful politician who defended Anies’ speech was Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who said that the governor was speaking from a historical context and did not mean to offend anybody.

Sauce

The 3 Influences on Chinese Indonesian Naming

QUOTE

Having been living in Singapore for a while, I have come across many people who have been perpetually scratching their heads about how Chinese Indonesians get their names. In this post, I am going to talk the Chinese Indonesian naming conventions and hopefully it will help clear a few things up.

First of all, many Chinese Indonesians know their Chinese surnames and names, but they may not be included in their legal names. For example, a person named Jessica Wijaya may know that her Chinese name is Li Li Ting (Chinese surname 'Li'), but it is not included in his legal name ‘Jessica Wijaya’. 'Jessica' and 'Wijaya' are both given names with no reference to any actual Chinese family names whatsoever.

BUT WHY ARE CHINESE INDONESIANS NAMED THIS WAY?

I prefer not to comment about politics as of now, but the short answer is as follows as described by Aimee Dawis in The Jakarta Post (2008):

QUOTE

“In 1966, the Indonesian government issued a policy which strongly recommended Indonesian citizens of Chinese descent change their names into Indonesian ones to prove their loyalty to Indonesia.

This policy was released in the wake of the Soeharto regime’s closures of Chinese schools, bans on public expressions of Chinese culture and language and widespread government suspicion regarding the Chinese community’s role in the PKI’s (The Indonesian Communist Party’s) uprising in 1965.”

Supposedly there are other reasons as to why the legal names of Chinese Indonesians are the way they are now, such as to avoid discrimination, and to display a sign of 'integration' into the Indonesian society. The validity of these reasons are debatable, however, as in these days, it is often not difficult to identify which kinds of names belong to Chinese Indonesians and which do not, as Chinese Indonesian legal names are typically constructed in a few familiar ways.
SO WHAT MAKES UP CHINESE INDONESIAN LEGAL NAMES?

Again, as I have mentioned above, although many Chinese Indonesians do know their Chinese names, they do not use them as their legal names. The Chinese Indonesian legal names are typically generated with one or more of the three naming influences: Western, Chinese, and/or Indonesian. See the rapid-fire breakdown below.

1. Western influences
First, the western influence. This is growing in popularity whereby some Chinese Indonesians are named in completely Western names with no Chinese nor Indonesian influences. A few examples are Jesslyn Lydia, Albert Thomas, and Cindy Steven.

2. Chinese influences
There are still some Chinese Indonesians with fully romanised Chinese names like those found in Singapore and Malaysia, such as Lim Ong Huat, Eng Sim Yin. These names are normally owned by older generations of some Chinese Indonesians.

3. Indonesian influences
Some older generations of Chinese Indonesians have also adopted full Indonesian names with no relevance to their Chinese names for sociolegal reasons, e.g. Sugiarto, Mariati. Younger Chinese Indonesians nowadays are no longer usually named with only pure Indonesian names.

4. Western–Chinese influences
Not much explanation needed for this one as it is widely adopted all around the world. Examples: Tommy Lim, Jessica Tan. This kind of naming convention is starting to grow in popularity amongst Chinese Indonesians.

5. Western–Indonesian influences
People with this naming convention usually have a Western name as their first name, and then an Indonesian-sounding name as their last name. Some examples of Western–Indonesian names are Philbert Antono, Winny Putri.

6. Chinese–Indonesian influences
This is where it gets a little more interesting. This naming convention merges a Chinese surname with a seemingly Indonesian name. Example: Chinese surname Han merged into the name Handi.

7. Western–Chinese–Indonesian influences (most commonly used)
This is the most common form of Chinese Indonesian names. Typically a Western name is used as the first name, and a combination of Chinese and Indonesian influences is used as the last name (see #6). Example: Vivian Tanjaya—Vivian (Western name) with Chinese surname Tan merged with Indonesian-sounding name Tanjaya. Notice how the surname Tan is merged into Tanjaya, making the last name seemingly Indonesian although it signifies their Chinese surname. This naming convention has been widely used amongst Chinese Indonesians from the 1960s to maintain the last bit of their Chinese names in response to the name-changing policy which was strongly encouraged at that time.

CHINESE INDONESIANS WITH A SINGLE NAME

One may come across Chinese Indonesians (and other Indonesians in general) who possess only one name. In Indonesia, last names are usually just another given name. The Indonesian National ID card and passport only list full name(s), and does not distinguish a person's first and, if any, last name. For Chinese Indonesians, when a person has only a single name, it is very likely that it is a pure Western name (see #1, e.g. William), pure Indonesian name (see #3, e.g. Sumarni), or a combination of Chinese–Indonesian name (see #6, e.g. Fandy).

Let’s say a person with only a single name, take 'Felicia' for example, were to fill in an international form/document, say, for the purpose of booking a flight ticket. She would have to fill in ‘Felicia’ as both her first name and last name (e.g. Felicia, Felicia) as most international forms/documents do not allow a last name field to be left empty. Whereas on Facebook, she may insert her Chinese surname as her last name instead (I have noticed quite a number of my single-named Chinese Indonesian friends doing exactly this). Although as a matter of fact, if you were to create a Facebook account in Indonesia, you can actually sign up with only one name. Facebook will not demand a last name as it understands that many Indonesians only have a single name.
CHINESE INDONESIANS WITH A LAST NAME

When a Chinese Indonesian has a last name, do not assume that everyone else in his/her family has the same last name. As I have mentioned, a last name in Indonesia is not a family name, but rather a given name. But of course, a family can CHOOSE to have the same last names if they want to.

Take an example referring to naming convention #7, where a combination of Chinese–Indonesian names are used as last names. A father in a family with the Chinese surname Ong is named Sukanto Onggo, the mother Liana Onggo, the son Robert Onggo, and the daughter Alice Onggo. This is a case where a family chooses to have the same last names adapted from the original Chinese surname Ong.

An example to illustrate the case where every family member has different last names, and also different naming conventions would be something like: A father in a family with the Chinese surname Tan is named Harris Utara (see #5, Western–Indonesian name with no significance to his Chinese surname), the mother Lim Sui Cin (see #2, pure Chinese name), the son Eric Tansen (see #7, Western–Chinese–Indonesian name with reference to his Chinese surname), and the daughter Stephanie (see #1, single Western name with no reference to her Chinese surname).

TL;DR

-Chinese Indonesia's legal last names are given names, not surnames
-It is not rare to find someone with only a single name in Indonesia
-The three influences on Chinese Indonesian naming convention: Western, Chinese, Indonesian
-Most popular Chinese Indonesian naming convention: Western first name with a combination of Chinese and Indonesian influences as a last name (see naming convention #7)

http://www.hokkienlang.com/articles/chines...ming-convention

inb4 lolyat.id
