Hey guys, been out of the hardware scene for the longest time and I’m planning to get some new components for a gaming rig. Hence, needed your advise if the below setup is good to go.

Note: planning to keep this rig as-is for the next 3-5 years minimally, with sufficient raw power for majority of AAA titles - mostly fps, rts and mmorpg.

1. Proc : Intel I7-8700.
2. Mobo : Asrock Z390 Phantom Gaming SLI/AC.
3. Memory : Kingston HyperX D4 PC3200 8GBx2.
4. Hdd : I’m a suc.ker for fast ssd
(1) Adata M.2 NVMe XPG 8200 Pro 240GB.

I am currently in the midst of finalizing the new pc items. I hope some of you may be able to assist me in finalizing some of the parts

setup (1)

proc : amd phenom ii x6 1090T black edition
mobo : asus crosshair iv formula rog
ram : corsair 1600mhz 2 x 2gb cl8 dual channel

setup (2)

proc : intel i7 930 2.8ghz
mobo : gigabyte x58a-ud3r
ram : corsair 1600mhz 3 x 2gb cl8 triple channel

Either one of the above setup will be paired with the below configuration :

a. cooler master v8 cpu cooler ( already owned - reused )
b. asus ati radeon hd5870 v2 1gb ddr5 OR asus ati radeon hd5870 matrix 2gb ddr5 ( possibly of crossfire with asus v2 )
c. intel x25-m 80gb 32nm ( os partition )
d. western d. velociraptor 150gb ( gonna pair it with my current western d. velociraptor 150gb for raid 0 - data/games partition )
e. seasonic x750 ( crossfire of two ati radeon hd5870 usage )
f. dell u2410 ultra sharp monitor ( dual monitor setup if i chose NOT to crossfire hd5870 )

Now, below are some of my concerns in my proposed rig as above :

1. what is the future holds for 1366 socket considering 1156 socket has been launched with plenty of affordable i5 and i7 processors? ( i'm not an intel person ever since pentium iii )
2. will there be more thuban based processors launching by end of the year? for instance, 960T?
3. i have read some of the reviews on the processors and it seems that i7 has better performance in gaming compared to the x6 1090T if not all?
4. is the dell u2410 suitable for gaming purpose? or should i wait abit more for led monitor?
5. is the seasonic x750 would be good enough for 2 x hd5870 crossfire? and also future expansion such as 2 x 1TB samsung hard drives?
6. last but not least, if you were me, which setup would you choose and why?

The main purpose of the rig is for GAMING! and GAMING!.. and some virtualization works too. Hence, the extra cores in X6 and HT technology in i7 would be nice to have

Cost wise is almost the same for setup (1) and setup (2) .. now it would have to be determined by performance and "future" proof IF there's any

Hope that the experts in LYN.net would be able to shed some lights

Issue with Vista New Installation

Hi,

Currently I am facing a weird issue here and I'm not sure if I did face the same thing with my old mobo. Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H. What happened was that when I did a fresh Vista installation on my new pc as spec in my signature, there was some minor issues. As soon as Windows finishes copying files (stage 1).. it took about 3 minutes before Language selection window pop up (stage 2).. Once I have selected the language installation and click Install Now.. it will take another 3 minutes before CD key window pop up asking for CD key (stage 3).. once I have key in my windows CD key, it will take another 2-3 minutes before Windows Terms and Condition window pop up (stage 4).. and after that, things are pretty much normal..

I have tried to reset both pieces of my RAM.. tried with only 1 stick and only 1 hard drive.. but no avail. I am installing Vista 64 bit.. anyone else having similar issue?

Hi all,

I have just purchased a new AMD Phenom II X3 720BE processor back in last week. However, upon some research, I have found out that some CPUZ screen shots of locked (4th core) or unlocked (4th core) has Deneb listed as code name, instead of Heka. However, mine was listed as Heka despite with locked and unlocked of 4th core. I have also did some google and found that, the correct code name is Heka and not Deneb for Phenom II X3 processor family.

Therefore, I was wondering if there are actually 2 code names out there in the market for Phenom II X3 720BE? If so, would there be any difference?

Oh, by the way, the CPUZ that I used was CPUZ v1.51. I don't have any screen shot with me at the moment. will post it up as soon as I'm able to get a screenshot of my processor.

Currently I have some hardware that I would like to purchase. Could you please let me know your opinions towards the below hardware?

nVidia Setup :
Asus Crosshair II Formula
Palit GeForce GTX260 Sonic Edition

ATI Setup :
Biostar TA790GX 128MB
Sapphire ATI HD4890

The priority of my selection is as below :
1. Scalability in future (upgrades such as SLi or CrossfireX and minor upgrades)
2. Performance wise - Gaming / Workstation with a lil' bit of OC
3. Durability / Reliability
4. Cost wise

With that being said, both motherboard able to provide the functionalities that I require, but both running on different chipset respectively. The games that I play from time to time are World of Warcraft / Red Alert 3 / and more to come. Perhaps Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3?

Below are my current specs :
AMD Phenom X4 9650 2.3Ghz
8GB Kingston Value DDR2 800Mhz
Corsair TX650

Anyone able to share their opinions toward the above setup? How about any DFI / Gigabyte board that is on par with the above motherboards ?

Also, I may have some questions to Asus Crosshair II Formula motherboard users :
1. As I read the specs in Asus website, it says the max memory that the board can support is only 8GB. Does it mention single sided or double sided memory? I have 8GB Kingston Value RAM with double sided chip.
2. Is the motherboard able to support PCI card? I have a PCI sound card which I would like to use with the board if I were to purchase the board.
3. Are there any different rev of the board as in like Gigabyte boards? rev 1.0, rev 1.1, rev 2.0 and so on. If it does, what is the latest rev?

Vista on SATA RAID

Hi All,

I'm in the process of installing Windows Vista and I encountered few issues

1. I have 2 SATA HDD and 1 PATA HDD. It seems that my rig could not boot up if I were to unplug by PATA HDD. my 2 SATA HDD are on RAID 0 configuration. Any solution to this? I suspect that the bootmgr wrote my PATA HDD as primary boot up disc. However, I have defined the boot sequence in BIOS already. I will have first boot successful and it will show me BOOT DISK FAILURE, bla bla bla (if I unplugged my PATA HDD), so as soon as I click CTRL+ALT+DEL, it restarts my system. However, my system hung after BIOS check. Can't press anything nor TAB to look at boot sequence.
2. I found BOOTSECT.BAK file in my PATA HDD while my Vista was installed on SATA HDD. I did some research on it seems that it was created by Vista as I had my WinXP in my SATA HDD previously. Some say it is safe to delete, some say not. so what say you?
3. I'm using Asus DVDRW (SATA) and in the process of installing Vista (RAID 0 configuration), it asked for CD/DVD device driver? Anyone encounter such situation? I thought RAID driver would be sufficient? At least that's what manual says.

Any solutions towards the 3 issues above? Many thanks all sifu
