8bitdo SF30 Pro - User Review

this review is based on usage ONLY with the Nintendo Switch. the controller can also be used with Windows/Mac/Android/Raspberry Pi.

there is an alternate version called SN30 Pro. It has the indigo Super Nintendo design along with concave X and Y buttons.

##look-and-feel
— color tone of controller is darker than on box art or what is seen in online published media
— lightweight
— “noisy” click-clack face buttons (plastic-ky)
— START/SELECT buttons are soft “mushy” texture
— shoulder trigger button's shape and size well designed
L/R is thinner than L2/R2 buttons, placed horizontally at the top of the controller and has the "click type" response
L2/R2 has “springy” feedback but requires almost no pressure to de-press. (great for platformer/metroidvania but feel less satisfying for say 3D shooters)
— D-Pad too rigid for swift rolling direction movement (but analog sticks work well even for 2D games). one advantage is it's sturdy .. maybe a bit too sturdy

##function
— 2 or 3 hrs to fully charge
— 15 hrs of usage (vibration function mostly OFF). the console will NOT show the correct battery charge remaining (it will be always shown as full)
— there is an orange indicator light at the shoulder trigger area to indicated battery low and charging status
— bluetooth connection (connect thru USB for first time and it will auto pair with the Switch). thereafter just press START to power on controller.
— wired connection (need to turn on Pro Controller Wired option in Settings)
— player number indicator support e.g Player 1 with one notch on vs Player 2 with two notches on (in a bottom 4 light button panel)
— motion control works fine
— Rumble can be “loud” in some games. fortunately there is a method to toggle vibration on/off using L+R+SELECT)

— firmware can be updated

— CANNOT power ON the N.Switch !
— CANNOT be charged thru the N.Switch Dock while it is in Sleep Mode !

— main issue encountered is when another Nintendo official Joy-Con is paired. there will be major input lag once you have a mix of the official joycon and this controller. there is no such issue when only 1 or 2 SF30 Pro is in use.

bluetooth file exchange

i have been using the Bluetooth File Exchange utility to send files from MacOS (MLion) to my Android phone without any issues till few days ago.

it just stopped working. when sending the file ... the dialog to connect to the phone appears ... then after about 10secs it will say that the transfer failed. i could see that the status of the device is connected but it just fails to run the file transfer service i guess.

the phone has been paired and i have used it to transfer many files succesfully before.

this may be a coincidence but i discovered this issue just after there was a system related update (just prior to the 10.8.5 update). it was an auto downloaded update and i just got a notification that the system needs to be restarted (as usual).

there was also a brief issue with the Apple Keyboard and Magic Mouse (like lost/unresponsive behaviour) ... but after the system restart they went back to normal.

anyone can verify if this is happening to their installation too?

iTunes randomly launches itself

i have searched and read quite a number of similar issues (and tested most of the recommended solution) but just thought of asking if anyone here had same issue.

basically it started behaving like this only from yesterday.

iTunes seems to launch itself during system startup (but it's not a Login item or i don't have anything which uses iTunes launching during startup either)

sometimes it random launches itself too. no pre-determined pattern ... could be in the midst of using any app and it starts itself. and sometimes it even plays the 1st song on the previous playlist when the program was last open and stops playing after about 30secs !

so far only sure way i can stop this is by removing the .plist files in the user's home directory Library folder. not sure how or whether it will behave like this again.

also curious what may have triggered or lead to this behaviour...

i'm on Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and iTunes 10.7

wii shop issue

have been having issues accessing the Wii Shop channel since New Year's Eve ... always getting error 209600 or 209552.

once in a blue moon, can still get into the shop main page but after 1 or 2 clicks ... back to error screen.

everything was working fine before this. no new system updates, original set, no changes to home network.

my guess is TMnet streamyx but it's been almost a week now. also dunno how to complain if it's really their problem

btw, i',m staying at Putra Heights. anyone with similar issues recently ?

Hori DS Lite screen protector

I've just applied the screen protector on both the top and bottom screen of my DS Lite.

anyone finds the touchscreen's sensitivity a tad too "sticky" after applying it ?

the top screen seems much smoother (just like the old HORI protectors for DS Phat).

appreciate any feedback on this, thanks.
