KUALA LUMPUR: Individual taxpayers with taxable incomes exceeding RM100,000 annually contributed a significant 86% of the total individual income tax collected in 2023, says the Finance Ministry.

It said this contribution formed part of the RM37.77bil in individual income tax collected by the government for that year, which represented 22% of the total direct tax collection of RM171.34bil.

"Of this, the top 20% of taxpayers, with taxable incomes over RM1mil, played a substantial role in bolstering Malaysia's fiscal resources.

"Their contributions are crucial in maintaining economic stability and supporting national development," said the ministry in a written Parliament reply on Aug 11 (Monday).

Aminolhuda Hassan (PH-Sri Gading) had inquired about the number of individuals in Malaysia with net wealth exceeding RM100mil and their tax contributions.

The ministry said such specific data was unavailable in the Inland Revenue Board's (LHDN) records, as net wealth does not directly correlate with income tax liabilities.

"Certain assets are not subject to income tax unless sold or disposed of, such as real estate or specific investments," it said.
The government, it added, appreciates the role of high-income taxpayers in bolstering economic stability and strengthening the country's fiscal position.

"The government remains committed to enhancing tax compliance and addressing tax leakage issues, particularly among high-income individuals with assets and wealth not aligning with reported taxes.

"This includes income kept in offshore accounts, cross-border transactions, domestic transfer pricing, online activities and shadow economy cases," it added.

In addition to tackling tax leakage, the government is focused on improving tax administration efficiency through digitalisation and encouraging tax compliance via ongoing awareness efforts.

"We are continually refining the structure and treatment of income tax to ensure a fair and progressive taxation system in Malaysia," it added.

PETALING JAYA: A bread manufacturer has been slapped with a RM60,000 fine by the Klang sessions court for profiteering by raising the price of its potato buns last year.

Judge Sharifah Hascindie Syed Omar meted out the sentence on Today Bakeries Products (Klang) Sdn Bhd, represented by its director, Khu Kim Chai, who changed the company’s plea to guilty today.
Khu, 67, paid the fine after the court proceedings, Berita Harian reported.

The Klang company was charged with profiteering by hiking the price of its potato buns from RM3.35 to RM3.51, and from RM1.89 to RM2.05, leading to a 16 sen increase in net profits.

The offence was committed at the company’s premises at Taman Klang Utama on May 27, 2024.

The charge was framed under Section 14(1) of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, which provides for a maximum RM500,000 fine upon conviction.

The company was represented by lawyer Ridzuan Omar, while domestic trade and cost of living ministry prosecuting officer Saiful Saaidin prosecuted.

For those who are seeking high and low for this. Here goes, premiering on LYN.

Stuffs needed:
1. Ipad (any ios device should work, as long as jailbroken)
2. apple camera connection kit (capalang one should work, not tested)
3. hard disk formatted to FAT32
4. hard disk USB cable with 2 heads (one for power, one for normal)

Apps needed:
1. Cydia (obviously)
2. Ifile (from bigboss)
x3. SSH client (from prakash katariya) *new - no need*
4. USB mount SBSettings toggle (big boss) *new*

Method:
1. make sure hdd is formatted to fat32. use this Fat32format
2. connect the hdd power plug to a power source (eg. charger) and the main head into camera connection kit
x3. start ifile app *new - no need*
x3.1 navigate to disk->mnt. *new - no need*
x3.2 create a folder, for example hdd1*new - no need*

x4. Start SSH terminal (connect to localhost, username, password , port 22) username should be root *new - no need*
x 4.1 enter 'mount -t msdos /dev/disk1s1 /mnt/hdd1' *new - no need*

4. activate SBS settings and click on USB
*your hard disk should be flashing led like mad by now*
4.2 done!

5. back to ifile
x 5.1 you will see your files at /mnt/hdd1 *new - no need*

6. click on the USB icon again to unmount!

Herb Van Gent points his infrared gun at a square of still unpainted gray shingle and clicks the trigger. He gets an immediate temperature reading: 143 degrees (62 degrees Celsius) and rising. Then he aims it 5 feet (1.5 meters) away to a square of roof I have just painted: 98 (37 degrees Celsius) and decreasing.

He smiles, announcing 45-degree Fahrenheit (26-degree Celsius) difference on the first coat. That means it also will be cooler inside the building, he says, which saves energy.

It is 11 a.m., and we are on the roof of a New York retirement home, rolling out a thick, shiny white paint. Van Gent is one of a volunteer group that has come up here to paint the roof as part of a city-sponsored "cool roof" program.

The idea of painting roofs white is catching on across America; Energy Secretary Steven Chu has said it could contribute to the fight against global warming.

"Cool roofs are one of the quickest and lowest-cost ways we can reduce our global carbon emissions and begin the hard work of slowing climate change," Chu said in July as he announced that Department of Energy buildings would be painted white wherever possible.

While white roofs keep homes cool in summer by letting less heat in, they have little impact on winter heating bills, according to the Cool Roof Rating Council, a nonprofit group created in 1998 to research and implement the technology. That generally is because the sun is less intense in winter, the group said, and less important as a heat source. The roofs do not let any more heat escape than other roofs, it said.

In the state of Arizona, cool roofs are mandatory for state and state-funded buildings, while Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has an ambitious green energy plan that put cool roofs at its center.

In New York City, with Mayor Michael Bloomberg's blessing, the Department of Buildings and other public and private groups have vowed to paint 1 million square feet (90,000 sq. meters) of roof on city-sponsored community buildings. Organizers have advertised on Craigslist for volunteers, promising that the painting is rewarding and fun.

I decided to give it a try.

There were half a dozen volunteers on the roof that day from New Jersey-based GAF Materials, which supplied the reflective white paint. Among them was technical specialist Steve Hecht, who showed me how to spread the paint.

Proponents say the idea is as sound for private homes as it is for big, residential apartment buildings. The Cool Roof Council provides information on materials and resources at its website, Coolroofs.org.

Philadelphia recently held a "cool roofs for free" competition, and a block of row houses won.

"The biggest difference is definitely when we wake up in the morning," said Terry Jack, who organized her block's winning entry. "I noticed the difference the very next morning after they painted the roof."

Workers are painting the roofs on both sides of her street with reflective white paint, while also insulating the houses. City officials hope to show that a white roof will reduce the amount of air conditioning used, saving energy and reducing electricity bills.

According to former California energy commissioner Arthur Rosenfeld, an average, 1,000-square-foot (93-sq. meter) roof painted white can save 10 tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of emissions from one car for about 2 1/2 years. On a national scale, turning roofs cool could eliminate 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide, roughly the same as taking 20 million cars off the road for 20 years, according to Rosenfeld, who carried out his experiments with Hashem Akbari at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in California.

So far, many cities have been limited in their response. New York's 1 million square feet (90,000 sq. meters) of white roofs is a "very, very, very, conservative target," said Akbari, who advised the city on its NYC Cool Roofs project.

"When you consider that a large box store or mall can have a roof of 200,000 square feet (18,500 sq. meters), the entire New York program is the equivalent of painting five of those stores," he said.

But Akbari stressed it is not just about white paint.

"Certainly, the white color helps, especially if it is special reflective paint, but ultimately we want to see people using cool roof material when they have to change their roofs," he said. "There are a whole range of materials that can reflect the heat."

Sophisticated white roofing material can lie underneath a roof's visible surface, he said, reflecting the sun's heat while allowing a wider choice of colors on the surface.

"Definitely, aesthetics has held back the cool roof movement until now, but that is changing. You have a longer lasting roof without having to look bad," said Akbari.

According to the Department of Energy, there are no federal tax credits for roof coatings, but there is a tax credit for using cool materials when replacing a roof.

htpc+lcd sound problem over hdmi

Dear all,
I recently got myself a 32LG53FR full hd lcd tv, and my first choice of source will be my htpc computer
I am facing this problem that i could not solve.

the sound coming out from tv sounded like it went thru a karaoke machine and tuned the vocal key down 1 spot
(female voice become male voice)
no matter what software i use (including winamp, ttplayer etc) and no matter what source i use (avi, mkv, flv, mp3 etc)
even youtube over firefox

I have no choice but to use the realtek control panel to tune the karaoke key up 1 stop.
this solved the problem but the sound quality deteriorated.

anyone else facing this problem? I dont have other source to test the hdmi. sound from analog output is ok

TA690G biostar (build in hdmi output, no other hardware used)
software = windows media classic, WMP11, powerdvd etc
decoder = FFVshow decoder for mpeg4
tried native VLC player also same
