Logo Design Process

I'm Azri from impianaLogo. Thinking of sharing my design process from my blog on producing a logo design so someone will benefit from these. If you have any feedback, suggestions or thoughts, don't hesitate to comment below.

Before leaping into the designing and illustrating processes, I’ve used my own design process on conducting any project for my clients. The process were made so that I could achieve the best result possible to fulfill the needs and expectations from my customers. Every process was made in a very precise manner to ensure the consistency of the design quality.

1. I’ll conduct a design brief.

I have my own design questionnaire on my website to guide the customer on writing important descriptions that the designer need to know. However, if the client is considering specific task or special details, I’m more than happy to conduct a special interview session with them just so that I won’t miss any of their important points that I should include into the design briefs. It could take several minutes and up to an hour, depends how complex the design is.

2. I’ll make some research based on the design brief.

Just to have an idea on what and how the company is, I spent some of my time doing some background research about the company. If the company is just about to start and have no clear background details, I’ll try to do some research on the company’s competitors. For me, these researches are important so that my designs won’t have any copyright issue with their competitors. Plus, research is important to keep the logo design fits the current styles and trends that are related to the design brief.

3. I’ll get my hand on the paper and start sketching.

Jumping straightaway to Illustrator is not a desirable way of creating and conceptualizing ideas. After I’ve done enough research, I’ll start brainstorming ideas and concepts by sketching them onto a sketch pad. I’ll just throw everything that pops in my mind onto the paper just to keep all the ideas flow. Whenever I got stuck, I’ll take one step backward into my research and design brief to grab extra ideas to maintain the consistency and coherence between the design and the customer’s needs.

4. now I jump into the software.

Adobe Illustrator is the main tool I’ve used on producing logo. It is due to the fact that, illustrator is a very powerful tool to create lines and vector based images. It works best to design a logo since the logo need to be scalable in all different sizes. To convert the hand-drawn sketches into a digital sketches, I’ll use either my camera, phone or scanner to capture the sketches and traced them into illustrator. From here, I’ll work with different tools within the software to produce almost similar image as the hand-drawn version. However, it doesn’t work every time. Several changes had to be made on the hand-drawn logo due to limitations of illustrator itself.

5. I’ll put everything together to be presented to the client.

The presentation could be varied depends on what the company is about, ranges from business cards to price tags or maybe packages, these presentations are to show the clients on how the logo works on their products or marketing services. Again, I don’t use mockup on every clients. It depends on the professionality and preferences level of the client either to choose a mockup presentations or just the logo.

These are a general rule of mine to produce a logo. In summary, I start with a brief with the customer, do a design research of the company, then I’ll sketch to give ideas on the design concept. After done with sketching part, I’ll trace them into Illustrator and export it into a mockup to be presented to the customer. And wadda! Its done!
