So my girlfriend was a victim of snatch theft, the guy took her laptop out of her bag while she was having a migraine on a bus and she fell down and had to go hospital for concussion and all kinds of shit.

Personal injuries regardless, she got her mac back, because the police managed to track it down to a hardware shop. Needless to say it had been completely reformatted, with all her data erased including her C++ and Matlab stuff (she's a programmer).

What I want to know is , since HDD data can't be decisively erased, is there any way of getting it all back?

Hope you can help because she's ill and injured and as a freelancer with few savings her livelihood is basically destroyed, since she not enough money to buy more programming software.

My first job offer

Before I make the decision to sign on the dotted line, I'm looking up tips on this website to make sure I don't get tipu'd or have misunderstandings of the job contract. For example, I found out that generally, you need to pay compensation of a month's worth of pay if you don't give sufficient notice (1 month usually) of your resignation. Also, you can't reduce the notice period with your annual leave.

A few other questions I would like to ask is:

1. How binding is a contract? Say I want to change the terms of my contract after three months probationary period, can they change it? Say that a particular company policy is doing 'xxx', but it's not written in the contract, does it mean it doesn't apply to me?

2. I want to read the full contract before signing, am I allowed to take home a copy?

3. If an agreement is not made in writing, how legally binding is it? How much can I choose to enforce a verbal agreement (or choose to ignore it)?

4. After signing a contract, does the power lie squarely in the hands of the employer? Let's say in the contract it says I am to do 'yyy' work, that is my job scope. Can I refuse to do work that doesn't count under that scope? How do I know what counts and doesn't count?

5. Say the company is based in another country but has a start-up in Malaysia, it follows that country's remuneration practices goes according to the home country's job market...so how much of it follows Malaysian Law?

6. Am I entitled to EPF under Malaysian Law as a Malaysian?

Recruitment Consultant Commission Rates

So I just got an offer from an HR consulting firm to work as a graduate junior consultant there. I'm quite keen on working there, but all the talk during the interview about commissions and percentages and 2.5x multipliers and RM500 bonuses, market targets, incentives and fixed commissions went right over my head.

From what I understand, whenever somebody closes a case, they get a commission based on the monthly salary of the guy who just got hired by the company. So for example if you matched a company (your current client) with a prospective employee, and his salary was offered at rm 4000, you get a certain percentage of that salary as a commission. So there are four levels of commission; the first one is called the fixed commission where you will always get it if you close at least one case a month, because the quota for that is RM1000, and most jobs will have salaries that are above that. Then you have a market target of RM5000, and one step up from that is the market incentive, which is 10,000. What I don't get at this point, is how much of these figures do you get as percentages, for those of you doing HR?

The question I want to ask is at what point in the job search process is it acceptable to ask how much the prospective employer is gonna pay you?

(a)Towards the end of the interview?

(b) After you get the job offer?

Soooo what do you guys reckon is the best way to get rid of old tech that is close to 20 years old? It's been sitting there in my store room for donkey years and we never got round to selling/donating/recycling them. I'm talking about specifically:

Reason for thread: How do I fix it?

Hi, I'm not sure where to put thread about DIY repairs as I couldn't find the right sub-forum, so apologies in advance if this is wrongly posted. I would like to know how to fix my fan by myself, I know how to unscrew the lid but apart from that i dont know if i should take out the capacitor first or after doing something else or leaving it alone.
