BATU GAJAH, 27 Julai — Perkhidmatan tren elektrik (ETS) antara Ipoh dan Kuala Lumpur akan beroperasi pada minggu pertama Ogos ini dengan kekerapan lapan perjalanan pergi dan balik setiap hari, kata Menteri Pengangkutan Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

Beliau berkata perjalanan berkenaan akan mengambil masa kira-kira dua jam dan hanya akan berhenti di beberapa buah stesen tertentu.

“Kita terpaksa mengurangkan tempat-tempat berhenti bagi perjalanan ini untuk memastikan perjalanan menepati anggaran masa yang ditetapkan bagi keselesaan pengguna. Setiap perjalanan akan menggunakan satu set keretapi ETS yang mengandungi enam gerabak.

“Setiap gerabak boleh dimuatkan dengan 50 penumpang dan jumlah keseluruhan penumpang bagi setiap perjalanan ialah antara 300 dan 350 orang,” katanya kepada pemberita selepas Majlis Perasmian Kompleks Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), di sini hari ini.

Majlis perasmian disempurnakan Sultan Perak Sultan Azlan Shah.

Kompleks yang menelan kos sebanyak RM78 juta itu dibina di atas tanah seluas 60 hektar melibatkan pembinaan pusat pembangunan Akademi KTMB (MyRA), Depoh Penyelenggaraan Tren serta kuarters.

Mengenai kompleks itu, Kong berkata lebih ramai warga kerja KTMB akan dapat dilatih untuk menjadi tenaga profesional melalui kursus-kursus yang diadakan di akademi tersebut.

“Kemodenan infrastruktur yang terdapat di kompleks ini membolehkan produktiviti dipertingkatkan apabila tenaga kerja mahir dapat dilahirkan melalui akademi ini. Kementerian Pengangkutan juga optimis kompleks ini akan memainkan peranan penting dalam pembangunan lestari KTMB,” katanya.

Selain itu katanya, akademi tersebut juga berperanan sebagai Pusat Kecemerlangan Keretapi Asean (Acer) yang kini dalam perbincangan bersama pengendali-pengendali keretapi negara-negara Asean.

MIDWEST CITY Oklahoma (Reuters Life!) - A woman wearing underwear on her head robbed an Oklahoma McDonald's fast food restaurant and remained at large as police sought to identify her, police said on Wednesday.

Authorities said a surveillance video shows a middle-aged woman, wearing black pants and a black shirt, gloves, and a blond wig walking up to a McDonald's drive-through window.

The woman has what appears to be a pair of men's underwear wrapped around her face and held in place with paper clips, according to Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes. Midwest City is a suburb of Oklahoma City.

She reached inside the drive-through window when employees had stepped away for a moment, slid open a cash register drawer apparently using a key and took an undisclosed sum of money.

"It was pretty brazen. There were employees inside the business when all this was going on," Clabes told Reuters.

Clabes said the video was being aired on local television and authorities hope someone will be able to identify the woman. The robbery happened at 3 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

"You see a lot of things...but this is one of the stranger ones we've seen," Clabes said.

OAKLAND California (Reuters) - The city of Oakland, California on Tuesday legalized large-scale marijuana cultivation for medical use and will issue up to four permits for "industrial" cultivation starting next year.

The move by the San Francisco Bay Area city aims to bring medical marijuana cultivation into the open and allow the city to profit by taxing those who grow it.

The resolution passed the city council easily after a nearly four-hour debate that pitted small-scale "garden" growers against advocates of a bigger, industrial system that would become a "Silicon Valley" of pot.

"This is going to grow as an industry. And someone is going to have a high-tech producer," Council Member Jean Quan said during the debate.

Oakland already taxes sales of medical marijuana, but cultivation has existed in a legal gray area. Council members plan later action to levy new taxes on growers.

The city's decision is separate from a statewide ballot initiative to legalize marijuana for adult recreational use which Californians will vote on in November.

Polls put support for the November state legalization measure at about 50 percent of voters, and if it passed, the state would be the first to broadly legalize its use. Many jurisdictions tolerate some personal use and small sales, but none allow major-scale growing, sales and recreational use.

U.S. Federal law bans marijuana use of any sort but law enforcement authorities have turned a virtual blind eye to medical marijuana.

Large-scale cultivation in California so far has been dominated by criminals who grow marijuana in national forests or complexes of grow houses, law enforcement officers say.

The toughest opposition at the Tuesday city council meeting in Oakland came from the small-scale marijuana growers who feel they will be squeezed out of the market by the new 'agribusiness'. Outright opponents to marijuana use were silent.

KUALA LUMPUR: “Mystery” man Jho Taek Low, who reportedly secured the RM500 million contract to redevelop the Sungai Besi airbase (Tentera Udara DiRaja Malaysia), is back in the spotlight, this time in France.

The millionaire businessman, who is closely linked to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s family, was detained together with famed Hollywood star Paris Hilton by French police.

According to the French newspaper, Corse Matin, Hilton was detained at the Corsica airport after police dogs sniffed out her marijuana loot.

The paper reported that Hilton travelling with a personality who was “closely linked to the top Malaysian authorities” when she was detained.

But he was released after a 30-minute interrogation.

Commenting on the increasing curiosity about the Ivy League financial party boy, PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mat Akin said the latest incident raised even more suspicion about Jho Low.

Shamsul Iskandar had first raised the Jho Low issue at the PKR convention in Kota Baru last month.

At the time he had challenged Najib to reveal who the mystery man was. Jho Low is said to be a friend of Najib’s son Riza and wife Rosmah Mansor.

Jho Low, a 28-year-old from Wharton Business School, is rumoured to be an adviser to some international corporations involved in oil, gas and construction.

Talent squeeze hampers growth strategy, says Petronas

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — National oil companies (NOCs) are facing the stark reality of talent shortage which may hamper long term growth strategy if left unresolved, Petronas Vice President, Corporate Strategy Planning, Md Arif Mahmood said today.

The impact of the talent shortage could be far reaching, even to the extent of stalling the oil and gas boom, he said at the 15th Asia Oil and Gas Conference here, today.

He said, according to the International Energy Agency, about US$5 trillion in new investments in the oil sector would be needed over the next 25 years.

More than 400 major projects are expected to come on stream by 2012 according to Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA) and there are plans to construct 180 new offshore rigs.

On average, he said a typical new offshore drilling operation, requires a combination of 200 land-based and offshore workers.

He said some strategic minded NOCs are proactive in building a new pool of qualified candidates for their workforce in the coming decades.

For example, Saudi Aramco’s annual training budget is almost US$500 million (RM1.66 billion) and it has built the King Abdullah University for Science and Technology.

In the case of Petronas, it has established its own University and has to date, sponsored over 20,000 scholars at a cost of more than US$400 million. — Bernama

hello..im currently using streamyx 512k package..while print screen the connection status...i only did some online surfing without any downloading...i wanna know why it shows high rate of download and upload???is it because of spyware?but i downloaded spybot and deleted everything..even used cccleaner to delete all stuffs...and scanned with AVG anti virus...the prolem still persists...all sifus please help!!
