Wish to capitalize on the Digital Free Trade Zone?

We were told that Malaysian manufacturers now have a bright future to penatrade into the lucrative China market in the Digital Free Trade Zone.

But just based for few logical questions.
1) How does a new Malaysian seller going to compete with the tens of thousands if not millions of reputable sellers in Taobao/ TianMao who already carrying thousands of positive reviews?
2) How does a Malaysian SME manufacturer beat the Chinese Manufacturers who produce goods with a larger and thus much efficient scale on PRICING? Furthermore, shipping from Malaysia involves additional cost.

Is it true so?

Both agricultural products above cannot be produced in China and thus Malaysian sellers can easily find its niche in the China mass market, in fact many already doing that. But how about other SMEs?

Soon, online buyers shall be able to get such great deal from Taobao on Lazada which was recently acquired by Alibaba with $USD1B, the group's biggest offshore investment so far.

And the locals will have big problem to attract buyers with this prices and forced to slash margin significantly, both online and retail seller. The latter is much worse because needs to pay heavy rental to the malls...

As a Digital Marketing Consultant, me and my clients have been receiving spam mails as such. We are being told by those desperate China sellers that they use VPN rerouting to access Google and found us...
It shows that China local market is close to saturation and many players are eagerly looking to opportunity to export oversea. Did I mention Alibaba's investors are as eager for growth for the biggest offshore investment the group made?

So how to stop China goods from flooding into Malaysia within the World's First Digital Free Trade Zone?

We cant.

The only thing we can do now is to warn our fellow SMEs, not being too naive about selling into China market and most importantly increase their businesses, brand's digital foot print on the internet before it's too late. Well, it could be already too late now if they don't even have a website, but what businesses need today is an eCommerce and SEO friendly website, couple with creative marketing strategy to build brands value and share them across the digital dimension effectively. If things are done correctly, with a little luck, businesses can still prosper.

Threat or Opportunities for SME in DFTZ?

While another world record is broken by Malaysian by setting up the Digital Free Trade Zone in Malaysia- The one and the only offshore Free Trade Zone Alibaba has done outside of mainland China... and it's accomplished within the astonishing period of 4 months, we Malaysian should be proud.

Well, before we get our fellow SME manufacturers (consists of >80% of Malaysian manufacturers) to attack and penetrate into the lucrative China market, shouldn't we be thoughtful about helping them to defend their home base- the local Malaysia market first?

Simply because many of them not even have a proper company website...

I'm running a Online eCommerce Store and being a Digital Marketing Consultant. There is an increasing trend of spam mails sent by manufacturers in China who found us by rerouting the VPN to access Google.

Yes, they hire sales person who is well-versed in English to actively seek oversea buyers. The only logic understanding to this is that China market has grown saturated with slower growth and these manufacturers needs new market to ship their products to.

The opportunities for food manufactures to sell into China will be real after so many incidents of food safety happened in China, causing the local consumer to be extra cautious of what to consume. Things like bird-nest, durian or even tongkat ali should be able to find its niche in the China market more easily soon. But what will happen to other local manufacturers who produces apparels, stationary, furniture and etc, and our local retailers?

Here is the comparison between the listings of Malaysian eCommerce marketplace 11street vs Taobao China for hijab.
1RMB= RM0.64 plus free shipping for most of the Taobao seller in China for such small and light product, while Malaysian mostly charge between RM6- RM12 shipping fee:

I foresee not very soon, Malaysian consumer will be able to purchase much cheaper goods in Lazada (Alibaba acquired USD1B stakes in Lazada last year, the biggest offshore investment of the group) directly from the manufacturer who listed on Taobao/ Lazada with a much cheaper shipping fee.

The already-much-struggling retail sector in MY will face an even more challenging time ahead, not to mention Malaysian manufacturers who is going to have bigger problem to sell to their local dealers/ retailers and in the same time stuck in nowhere to fight with millions of well-established eCommerce sellers in the "New" China market promised by the DFTZ.

Didn't I mention many of our SME don't even have a proper company website and knows nothing about eCommerce, how do you fight in the modern war with spear and arrow???

We can't fight the globalization in the highly connected world today, anyway regardless whether there is a DFTZ or not...the authority is just making it official and named it nicely. Just ask around our friends today, many already know how to get great deals from Taobao, some even reselling it at FB or 11street above to make money (as of now).

Even the American has elected a new president hoping to bring back jobs to america to create goods locally which is counter-globalization.

But Malaysia is just a small country, unlike America and it's modern economy allies who are much influential, we can't afford to change the game.
I'm a believer of fair and free market. In my humble opinion, the SME needs to be alert and aware of what is coming.

Delay no more to get the business and brands with more digital exposure. It has to be done by Creative and Efficient Digital Marketing Strategy while facing the great challenges ahead of us.
