Penang, where can we eat home cooked food outside

Hello,

I am looking for a safe, clean, peaceful and not very crowded place in the island to sit and eat home cooked food with my girl friend. In my country you could do that in public parks (every city has tens of them).

I have a big rag and perhaps I can bring and use that if we plan to sit in the beach or park or somewhere (in case there is no more suitable place).

Btw. in a few days it is the new year ceremony in my country and we sometimes cook a special type of rice+fish and eat it outside home. I am planning for that.

Iswara car keys lost

Hello,

I left my car keys in a shop in one of the malls and I cannot find them. I have a spare remote but I cannot find my spare key (doors and the start have the same key).

The car is in Mall parking. What should I do? Can someone find the combination and build spares for me? Should I bring my car documents to mall security for that?

Hello everyone

A big congratulation to fellow Malaysian members, specially to those working in Academia.

During last five years Malaysia has had a huge progress in scientific products (i.e. peer reviewed publications). In 2006, according to SCIMAGO and Scopus, only 4000 peer reviewed papers were produced while 5 years later, In 2011 the total has had a huge jump to almost 18000 papers.

Malaysia had a very modest rank in world countries at that time while now it has reached the 23rd rank among world countries. It has passed countries like : Ireland, Romania, Hong Kong, Singapore, Finland, Norway, Israel, Denmark and Austria. Please pay attention that these countries may have fewer higher quality universities but the ranking is about the total production of the whole countries.

The highest jump though belongs to Iran which has now passed Turkey to become the first Muslim country in the ranking. Iran now stands at 17th position just behind Russia.

The progress can be seen and compared in below graph:

Congratulations again and this time, Malaysia really Boleh!!

Problem details
First occurence of problem: After installing Windows 8
Problem frequency: Always
Problem description:

I have "Windows 7" and "Windows 8" on the same PC. On Windows 7 the latest software and drivers work fine, but on Windows 8, the "connect" program cannot detect the dongle. This is despite the fact that, the driver is said to be fine in "device drivers" list.

1- Does anyone have the same problem?
2- Any solutions for Windows 8?

Limited budget and camera selection

Hello everyone,

I worry that posting such messages might be against forum rules. I wish it is not. Anyway here it goes.

I have had 1000D and a A200 each for almost 1 year. Now I don't have anything (I gave them to my sister) except a Canon 50mm F1.8

A- Now I have a budget of 1200RM-2200RM and want to get the most out of it.

B- I can select one of the 3 below options or just buy a cheap body and a relatively better lense (like Tamron 17-50).

I guess these are my options:

D200-D80
- The price for D200 is around 1900-2500 (sometimes 2200+ along with grip) on photomalaysia
- The camera is likely to be very old (4-5 years perhaps)
- D80 can be bought as low as 1500RM (body) and these are a bit newer.
- The photo quality is exactly the same as D60 and almost the same as sony A200. All these cameras have the same CCD: D200, D80, D60, A100, A200
- D60 has newer software but D200 and D80 have better body and more focus points
- The group of cameras I mentioned have a photo quality comparable to Canon 400D and 1000D and a bit lower than 40D
- You can have same photo quality with a D60, 1000D, 400D or even A200. And you pay 1000-1200RM with lower camera age
- The whole trade off is about features and body, not that much about photo quality

D90-D5000
- The above two are 12M CMOS and one level higher in photo quality than the previous series with VERY much lower noise (ISO1600 has a noise equal to ISO800 on above cameras, i.e. 1-2 stop better light , or 1-2 stop smaller F on lense).
- 700p Video on both
- Used D5000 full (with kitlens) can be obtained around 1850-2200RM. Body only around 1600RM+ (with a few months of remaining WARRANTY), less age and higher photo quality
- D90 used body is 1900-2200 (based on SC)

550D
- Uses a 18M CMOS with very much lower noise in equal ISOs. ISO3200 on this has the same noise of first class (i.e. D200 etc) with ISO800. So you can use a lens with at least 2 F stops smaller for same light.
- 1080p video
- Body is cheap plastic, and does not feel any comparable to above ones.
- Body only costs 2100-2200 used with 2.5 YEARS! of remaining gurantee (new one has 2+1 years). I have a 50mmF1.8 lens , so I should pay only 2100 for now.

The trade off is :

Better body and Features + High SC and very old <---> Totally cheap body + Very new sensor and much higher photo and video quality

What would you do with a 1200RM-2200 RM budget???!!

I wish forum friends can help me a bit with the decision.

I received the camera on 19 Jan 2010 and noticed that the warranty has been finished on 15 Dec 2009 (which was supposed to be 2 months from the post date of above mentioned thread, i.e. 5 March 2010).

I contact the seller and this is what he replies : "Oh it has? Dang. Tell you what I'll give you 1month personal warranty okay? =)"

Immediately I notice problems with kitlens focus which Jams sometimes. I assume it is temporary problem until the autofocus stops functioning. I email the seller on 30 Jan 2010 :

2- As you see he has not been honest about shutter count of the camera (mentions 300 in SMS to me and I assume he has perhaps wanted to say 3000 but missed one of the zeros). I check the camera after arrival and find that its shutter count is more than 16K!!!

Asking for:

The seller has been purposefully dishonest on multiple things. I demand reversal of the transaction (i.e. he pays back 1400 RM , not considering the additional 30RM I paid for postage).

- May I know where is Penang I can vaccine myself for hepatitis A+B? How much will it cost?

- Also does anyone know a very good spine specialist is Penang? I have severe back pain and it terribly effects my everyday life.

- A third question. What is the cheapest rate for a full spine MRI? I have heard it will cost me 1200RM in private hospitals. Isn't there MRIs available in government hospitals?

Universiti Sains Malaysia tripled fees

Hello,

I have just received my acceptance letter for a research degree in universiti sains malaysia but when I visited USM's IPS website ( http://www.ips.usm.my ) I understood that they have updated the website with new fees which is almost 3 times the fees which I had seen 1 month ago !!!

Anyone is aware of the reason???

Now I should pay something around $3000-$5000 more than the amount I had prepared to pay.

I will go to penang to do resaerch (computer science) in USM. I have very extensive experience in software development and also network.

- Are foreign students allowed to have part time jobs?

- Can I do small software projects at home and get paid?

I need this to cover a little of my costs.
