Couple’s endless cycle of true love

TELUK INTAN: Couple Ngou Yeow Hock and Tan Bee Choo, who were killed in a hit-and-run accident, might have been homeless but their undying devotion to each other was a symbol of love and an inspiration to many.

Going about their own business collecting recyclable items with their tricycle, they were known to be a happy and loving couple despite being intellectually challenged.

Clerk Mary Ng, 70, said the 51-year-old Ngou and Tan, 52, went everywhere together.

“They were always laughing and in a world of their own. They offered each other their food, scooping spoonfuls onto each other’s polystyrene boxes,” said Ng.

It was common to see Tan wiping the sweat off her husband’s face as they waited for the traffic lights to turn green.

“It always put a smile on my face watching them. It’s so sad that they were taken away so tragically,” said Ng.

On Tuesday, a vehicle, believed to be a lorry, ploughed into Ngou and Tan as they were crossing a T-junction on their tricycle at KM3.5 of Jalan Maharajalela here, killing the couple instantly.

There has since been an outpouring of shock and grief among the local community.

Teacher Ahmad Faizal Osman, 47, who wrote a tribute to the couple on Facebook, told The Star that the pair had lived with dignity, never accepting donations.

“I have friends who offered Aunty money but she gave it back to my friends’ children. Once, another friend met Aunty at the bakery.

“She was so happy to see and play with my friend’s child. She even gave the girl RM1,” said Ahmad Faizal, adding that their hard work and determination ought to be emulated.

“Many times, Aunty fell from the tricycle and once, she was even warded at the Teluk Intan Hospital after receiving stitches to her head,” he said.

The couple, said Ahmad Faizal, usually showered at the hospital or the Petronas station near the accident scene.

At night, they could be seen sleeping near the 7-Eleven outlet in Bandar Baru.

Despite having almost no possessions, the couple were charitable, he said, adding that Ngou had once refused money when he offered to buy some boxes.

“I tried again to offer him money but he wouldn’t accept it and so at last, I bought a few canned drinks and placed them on his tricycle,” said Ahmad Faizal.

Businessman Robin De Silva said despite the hardship, the couple always wore smiles.

“They were quite an inspiration for our family because though homeless, they were still happy,” said De Silva, adding that the couple’s children used to go around with them on the tricycle when they were young.

Yesterday, the couple’s three sons, one of whom has been adopted by a relative, bid them a final farewell as their remains were cremated.

It is believed that the couple had a daughter, who died at a young age after falling from the tricycle.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said no arrests have been made so far, adding that investigations were ongoing.

SOS: http://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2016...rational-story/

How many people see what they saw? How many people actually appreciate the present rather than worrying for things in the future?
Married at 17, mum at 18, dead at 19

Saffie Johnson was a determined teenage mother who became so overwhelmed with her postpartum depression battle she took her own life.

In an inquest into the 19-year-old woman’s death investigators heard that Ms Johnson was married at 17, had a child at 18 but following a separation from her partner and the stress of parenting the teenager wrote in her diary “today I will die” before suiciding.

The young woman, from Wythenshawe, Manchester, was living at her mother’s house at the time of her death on October 15, 2015 and was reportedly found by her brother who had arrived home from university.

Saffie's estranged husband Daniel Johnson tearfully told a Manchester inquest that his late wife was sick with depression and anxiety but refused to get help.

''I tried as best I could to help her to overcome her depression but the pressure of having a baby was too much for her,” Mr Johnson said,

''Saffie never told anybody how she was really feeling, she told them what she thought they wanted to hear.

“She never told her parents because she did not want to burden them and she wanted to overcome her problem alone.

''She loved the baby but it was too much for her and found it very difficult to cope.''

Mr Johnson, 22, who had married Saffie two weeks after the pair had met in 2013 told the inquest being married and having a child early on were both things she had wanted and despite his better judgement he agreed.

''I suggested waiting because Saffie was very young at just 17. But she was adamant. She was young, but she had her own mind and knew exactly what she wanted out of life,” he told the inquest.

"Two weeks after we met, we got married.

“She had been depressed for many years, but it worsened when she had our child. She became paranoid and her moods were very low.

“She loved him but it was too much for her. I believe she was suffering with postnatal depression, but she always refused to visit her doctor.

Sandra Kempster, a support worker told the inquest Saffie had reached out for help before she took her own life.

"She had called a non-emergency number and said she needed help,” Ms Kempster said.

"By the end of our visit, her mood had lifted significantly.

“She was laughing and chatting about her son and how well he was doing. She told me she was happy to go home and she said she would attend a support group for people with depression."

Assistant coroner Jean Harkin ruled the death a suicide.

In her conclusions she noted: "It is clear that Saffie had made many attempts on her own life in the past, usually after arguments. It is clear that she was depressed, as a cause of her relationship breaking down following the birth of her child.

"I would like to offer my most sincere condolences to her parents, to her brother, to her family and friends and to Daniel."

As well as the note in her diary Saffie also reportedly left a note for her baby son to be opened on his 18th birthday.

According to parenting website pregnancybirthbaby.org postnatal depression affects up to 1 in 7 pregnancies in Australia each year.

Not to be confused with the ‘baby blues’ which can go for 2-3 days after giving birth where one might feel teary, anxious and moody during that time, postnatal depression can involve prolonged thoughts of harm or self-harm, anxiety and panic attacks and overwhelming feelings of emptiness.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with depression call Lifeline on 09 5222 999 in Auckland, 0800 543 354 outside Auckland or call 111 if you believe there is immediate danger.

sos: http://www.msn.com/en-my/news/world/tragic...A0&ocid=UE01DHP

Used to work as insurance agent last time earning RM700 a month. That time stress no money. Eat also need plan properly.

After I change job sell car earn 1800 plus commission sales then immediately get a myvi.

After a while not satisfied I change to Vios after 3 years while having an average RM3K income.

Feeling not satisfied I push myself to buy Civic to impress people.

Now I am 35 earning RM5k but struggling to pay installment of BMW 3 series.

After all these my savings is just a mere RM15K at age 35. Every month my money left after expenses if lucky have RM1K sometimes exceed expenses if smth happen to the car.

When I think back all the money I spent on chasing better cars. Does it makes any difference? I feel I'm still like earning RM700 struggling to plan.

I just learned that no one gives a hoot about what you drive after 3 months you get a new car.

The struggle is real now also stress not enough money.

Can u make a million by 21 years old?

The Man Prosecutors Say Is Likely Behind Singapore's Stock Rout

John Soh Chee Wen is used to being accused of wrongful activity.

Soh, a bankrupt Malaysian businessman last week fingered by Singapore prosecutors as the likely mastermind behind the city’s biggest ever stock market manipulation scheme, has spent much of the past 20 years fending off allegations that he’s alternatively a front, an asset trader or a pump-and-dump operator.

“I’m battle hardened,” the 57-year-old, who’s out on bail during investigations, said in an interview on Jan. 27. In Singapore, a person can be arrested and out on bail even before charges are brought.

In the latest case, prosecutors said they are likely to charge Soh this year with being behind “serious criminal activities” that wiped S$8 billion ($5.6 billion) off the value of shares of three companies in October 2013. For his part, Soh said in the interview that the crash in the shares of mining companies Blumont Group, LionGold Corp. and Asiasons Capital Ltd., now known as Attilan Group, was due to a “collection of ad hoc events” triggered by an unexplained phenomenon.

The rout has been blamed for falling trading volumes and a loss of investor confidence in Southeast Asia’s biggest stock market. It led to rule changes and triggered the city’s largest securities fraud probe, an investigation that’s looked into some 500 trading accounts, 20,000 e-mails, 1,100 bank accounts and heard from 70 witnesses, but hadn’t pointed to a culprit. Until, that is, Soh was accused in court on Jan. 27 of being “probably the mastermind” of the 2013 event.

In 2007, Soh pleaded guilty and was fined in neighboring Malaysia for his role in a securities fraud case. Last week’s allegations are a “misunderstanding,” he said in an interview. Rather, he said, he was the biggest promoter of the companies whose shares took a nosedive more than two years ago. Soh said he is an adviser to the chairman of LionGold.

“I was one of the early and chief proponents of trying to build a sizable mining presence in Singapore,” he said in an interview at a cafe overlooking the Singapore River. “We -- me and some investors -- saw an opportunity.”

The group picked up undervalued Canadian and Australian mining assets and Soh said he went on road trips promoting LionGold, the glories of Singapore and its market efficiency.

“Unfortunately, instead of being labeled as the architect of a potentially large home-grown mining company, now they’re calling me the mastermind,” Soh said.
The opportunity they saw was a plan to defraud investors, according to Singapore’s prosecutors. Share prices of the three firms surged as much as 800 percent over nine months in a buying frenzy. The benchmark Straits Times Index was unchanged during that period. Then, in the space of a week in October 2013, the stocks crashed to pennies, plunging by at least 87 percent. The shares are now 99 percent off their peaks.

The rout has hurt market credibility, investigators said in court documents, which didn’t give details of the alleged plot. The three commodity companies have said they aren’t aware of what caused the share plunge. Banks and brokers have sued their clients and others to recover at least $230 million from the rout.

“We’re still not aware,” said Raymond Tan, chief executive officer of LionGold, referring to the reason for the company’s stock plunge. Blumont’s executive director Ng Kim Huatt didn’t answer repeated calls to his mobile phone. Calls to Attilan’s number listed on regulatory filings went to a voice recording which said the number wasn’t available.

Last week’s hearing was precipitated by a request from Soh, whose passport has been impounded under the terms of his bail, that he be allowed to travel to Malaysia to visit his 81-year-old mother, who he said is in ill health, and also to attend his son’s wedding. The request was denied.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore, which is jointly probing the case with the Commercial Affairs Department, said in the court papers it was concerned that Soh was a flight risk.

T-shirts, Shampoo
Anyone convicted of false trading or deceptive and fraudulent activities in Singapore faces a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine of as much as S$250,000.

Soh said in the interview he’s ready for the day when he might be charged and can tell his side of the story in court. He declined to comment further on the case.

Soh said he dropped out of a Malaysian university in 1979 after a week to sell t-shirts and shampoo. In 1981, the then-21-year-old made his first million ringgit before losing it all in 1984.
Soh said he took on jobs trying to restructure companies and even helped clean toilets during the Malaysian recession in 1985.

He spent the next decade acquiring companies, held positions in Malaysia’s second-largest political party and traded stocks on borrowed money. In 1996, he formed a partnership with the son of Malaysia’s then transport minister, creating a business empire around Promet Bhd. and Rekapacific Bhd. That relationship later soured and things unraveled for Soh during the Asian financial crisis as business slowed and debts mounted.

“Politics was my first love and deal making was my second nature,” Soh said. “You need to have certain masochistic tendencies to do deals and politics.”
Shopkeeper’s Son

Rekapacific, a property developer, was delisted in 2005, found by the Malaysian stock exchange to have broken its rules for failing to provide financial reports from 1999 to 2001.

Construction firm Promet was fined in 1997 for not disclosing share sales.

Calls to Rekapacific and Promet listed in Malaysia’s public phone directory went either to a fax machine or the lines were busy.

In 1999, Soh left Malaysia, returning in 2002 to face charges of defrauding a local brokerage of 520 million ringgit ($125 million). Soh denied claims by Singapore prosecutors that he fled his home country before authorities there could arrest him. In 2007, Soh pleaded guilty for his role in submitting false information to Malaysia’s stock exchange and was fined 6 million ringgit.

Soh, the son of a shopkeeper turned businessman, looked to Singapore for his next venture. He was traveling to Singapore from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur at least every other week until April 2, 2014, when he was arrested by Singapore authorities and questioned about his role in the stock crash.

Later that year, investigators expanded their probe and sought data from executives from six companies that had links with LionGold, Asiasons and Blumont.

Soh has since October been acting CEO at Dongshan Group, formerly known as Greatronic Ltd., which was delisted from the Singapore Exchange in 2008, according to the company’s website. The job at the investment holding company pays him S$3,000 a month, according to court papers.
Dongshan’s director Tiong Sing Fatt said in an e-mail that the company is standing by Soh and described him as a “brilliant turnaround strategist.”

Even Koon Yew Yin cancelled scholarship

Press Statement on Koon Yew Yin Scholarships

There are about 500 colleges and universities and all of them are lowering their entry requirement to compete for more students. As a result, many graduates cannot find employment.

In view of the growing serious problem of graduate unemployment and the recent disclosure by the Deputy Minister of Education, Senator Chong Sin Woon, that a university degree is not a ticket to employment and may even be a stumbling block, I have decided that my financial support program for students to do a foundation programme at local universities will come to an end on 28 February 2016.

In the meantime all applications for support that reach me before end February 2016 will still be eligible for consideration for support from that programme.

Applications reaching me after that date will be sent back with a note announcing that the financial assistance programme has ceased and is no longer available.

I would also like to assure the public that my commitment to supporting education will continue but will take other forms to be decided upon after my discussion with educationists and other experts in the field.

Koon Yew Yin
