We’re already in 2026. If we’re spending RM100k and above on a new car, people naturally expect updated technology — not the same old tech that hasn’t evolved much.

A few weeks ago, before CNY, I visited a shopping mall and saw the Mitsubishi Xforce on display.

First impression? The exterior looks good. Stylish and modern.

But once I stepped inside, the interior felt average. The biggest disappointment — it doesn’t even come with power seat controls.

I asked the salesgirl, “Why no power seat when I’m paying over RM100k for a new car?”

She smiled and admitted that’s one of its weaknesses. She kept emphasizing that it’s a Japanese product — selling reliability, durability, and strong resale value.

I just laughed 🤣

China brands are offering the same promises now — reliability, durability, resale value. It’s just a matter of time.

Imagine you borrow RM100,000 for 9 years.

You pay RM1,176 every month in both methods.
But how the interest is charged makes a big difference.

🧮 Rule of 78 (Flat Rate)

The bank calculates all the interest (RM27,000) at the start.

Then they spread it unevenly — more interest at the beginning, less at the end.

So in early months, your payment mostly goes to interest, not reducing your loan.

Example:

1st month → RM495 interest, RM681 principal.

60th month → RM225 interest, RM951 principal.

Even if you settle early (say after 3 years), you’ve already paid most of the interest — very little savings.

🟥 Bad for borrowers who plan to pay off early.
🟩 Good for banks — they collect most of the interest early.

💰 Reducing Balance Method

Interest is charged only on what you still owe.

Each month, as you pay off principal, your balance goes down — so interest also drops.

Example:

1st month → RM458 interest, RM718 principal.

60th month → RM226 interest, RM950 principal.

If you pay off early, you save a lot of interest because your balance is smaller.

🟩 Fairer for borrowers — more savings if you pay early.
🟥 Bank earns less if you settle early.

This programme is a good initiative. Previously, the government offered RM5,000, but now it’s reduced to RM4,000.

However, the idea may not be effective, as many people are unwilling to scrap their old cars due to unsettled loans, sentimental value (especially for antique vehicles), or simply to avoid taking on new monthly commitments.

It’s uncertain whether this programme can successfully attract owners of abandoned or roadside scrap vehicles to sell them just for the RM4,000 incentive, especially since it doesn’t require them to purchase a new car.

If it works, more people might consider scrapping their old junk vehicles without taking on new loans — which is helpful, especially for those who can’t qualify for financing.
