Bad Network and Signal Coverage

Hello,

I have recently lodged complaints of the terrible 4G signals in Sentul areas.

Examples of the area/condomunium affected are :
1) Jalan Sentul Perdana
2) Sentul Point
3) Sentul Village
4) Maxim
5) Sky Awani

The line has been very bad and not even able to send whatsapp message while stay inside the house. Since so many high rises getting more people to live in. Why maxis has not done anything to improve the signal and network coverage? There can be easily 4000 units among Jalan Sentul Perdana

Few Maxis dealers shared that Maxis does not upgrade the cell towers until they are down or 100% full capacity.
With the recent upgrade data for MOP customers, Maxis is unable to cope with high volume of complaints of their network issues.
You will still need to pay high monthly commitment despite the sub-par quality provided by Maxis.

I am not sure other areas are affected and please share and lodge complaints.

Food trucks hogging bays

PETALING JAYA: The public is seeing red at food trucks occupying public parking lots, especially in the busy commercial area of Section 14.

Business owners and residents said the food truck operators even set up chairs in the parking lots for their customers to sit and eat.

This has caused difficulties for motorists to find a parking space, especially during peak hours, forcing some to double park their vehicles, which worsens the congestion.

The public said the food trucks had been operating for a long time without any deterrence from local authorities.

“There should be a time limit for the trucks to park in one spot, as well as rules on how close they can be to other business establishments,” said resident Sam Lee.

A restaurant staff, M. Ganesh, said the trucks “stole” customers from nearby eateries, undercutting prices of food as the operating costs were low.

ACTIONLINE:

Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) said the food trucks were supposed to park in the “Smart Trak” bays.

Under the Selangor Food Truck Regulations, operating bays for food trucks are clearly demarcated.

A MBPJ spokesman said the bays, painted in orange with the words “Smart Trak” were designated for food trucks only.

“It is illegal to park the food truck anywhere else,” he said.

He gave his assurance that MBPJ would send its enforcement officers to patrol Section 14.

“Food trucks that occupy parking lots will be given a warning notice.

“If they continue to flaunt the rules, they will be fined,” he said.

The spokesman said unlicensed food trucks would be penalised.

Under the guidelines, truck owners are required to equip their vehicles with proper amenities.

Those selling soybean drinks, rojak, cendol or snacks, such as pisang goreng, are not considered food trucks, but vans, which require a different licence.

They cannot park at one spot for the whole day and are required to drive around designated areas without stopping for more than 15 minutes at a time.

https://www.nst.com.my/actionline/2018/03/3...ks-hogging-bays

How Domino’s used technology to woo millennials

Domino's Pizza spent a good part of the last decade chasing what seemed like every digital doodad to deliver pizza – sometimes to the scorn of observers who pointed out that the business was, after all, popping topping-covered dough in an oven and delivering it.

Why, the sceptics asked, do you need a digital voice-recognition app on your phone to order a pizza, when you can just call and speak to an actual person?

But now, as Domino's claims the title of largest pizza chain by global revenue – edging out its longtime rival Pizza Hut – the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based company's relentless pursuit of digital technology appears to be quite prescient.

And it's working on automated pizza delivery with drones and driverless cars.

One question that retail analysts are asking, though, is whether this is part of an effort to eliminate jobs.

Among the company's innovations:
– An app to track a pizza is while en route to you.
– A Siri-like voice recognition system, nicknamed Dom.
– The ability to order on just about any digital device and platform.

Not only has Domino's managed to bring in more than 60% of its business through digital channels, it convinced a generation of pizza lovers – many of them so-called digital natives – that the company really does get them.

“Oh totally!” said Laura Khalil, 37, of Detroit, who has used the iPhone app. “They understand people's desire to have things when they want it, how they want it – and get it through the channels they use. It's genius.”

Khalil – who said she loves Domino's pizza but is now trying to eat healthier – added the company caters to a quick fix.

“If I can just send a pizza emoji, I don't have to think a lot,” she said. “And their pizza is really good. I don't think any of this would work if their product was disgusting. What I love most about their app is it answered the No. 1 question I always had: Where is my pizza?”

More online ordering

A decade ago, Domino's started its digital transformation with its Pizza Tracker, a system to track pizzas on their way to their destination. Over the years, it rolled out all sorts of innovations.

At first, there was scepticism – and even some ridicule.

Some of it was even within the company.

“There was a lot of pushback across the board from a lot of folks,” Maloney said.

In 2013, Domino's put a camera in a kitchen and live-streamed it. It called the feature “Domino's Live.” It was not quite reality TV. There was just video, no audio, and it was only in one store in Salt Lake City. Domino's officials said they hoped the behind-the-scenes show would be entertaining to watch.

To many, it really wasn't.

But, the video made headlines and gave the company a chance to tout its commitment technology.

Then, the next year, Domino's created an app that let you order – and pay – from your Ford vehicle.

At the time, Domino's president and CEO said, it was “one of the coolest in a long list of recent technology innovations for Domino's,” and added that about 40% of its sales were generated by online orders.

He may have been exaggerating about it being cool.

But, again, it was an innovation that made headlines. By the end of the year, Domino's offered yet another technological advance: Dom, the company's Siri-like order-taking voice aimed at making online ordering a more conversational experience and putting the company in the company of tech innovators like Apple.

“What'll ya have?” Dom could ask.

More headlines.

And again, not everyone was buying into the pizza company's tech revolution. Some even suggested it was a waste.

One customer took to YouTube to publicly criticise Dom.

“Are you serious?” the critic said after watching a Domino's commercial for the app. “Did Domino's reinvent the phone call? Voice ordering is called a phone call. All you have to do is pick up the phone, which you've got in your hand, push speed dial for Domino's – “Hey, I want a pizza. ... ”

He added: “I wonder how much money Domino's spent developing an app to voice order a pizza?”

Doubling down on digital

Domino's, however, kept investing in new ways to order pizzas online – and to appeal to customers who were eager to use digital technology. It also went a step further by trying to innovate delivery.

In 2015, Domino's unveiled a retrofitted subcompact named DXP after a code for its delivery driving experts. It was designed to keep up to 80 pizzas warm from store to door and cost between US$20,000 (RM78,250) and US$25,000 (RM97,812) each for a franchise.

It also added a feature that let customers order via Twitter using a pizza emoji:

That led, in 2016, to the AnyWare campaign: Order from your phone by calling, texting, tweeting, using Facebook messenger; from your smartwatch; from your computer and tablet using the company website, Slack; from your car, from a button on your Samsung TV remote, and by using clicks, characters or voice commands to Dom, Alexa, Echo and Google Home.

But, the technology didn't always work.

Executives said the company was learning, improving – and using the innovation to not just sell pizzas, but also market the company to customers – and its investors – hungry for that kind of technology. Maloney called the tech "fantastic public relations stories" in a Wired magazine article.

By 2017, the company had enhanced its technology. It also began offering a pizza wedding registry – and even tried drone delivery in New Zealand, and driverless car deliveries in Ann Arbor, with future tests set in Florida's Miami-Dade County.

Domino's said it believes driverless-car delivery is “where the industry is going.”

Dom, what's next?

Domino's began with one store in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1960.

Back then, it was called DomiNick's. Brothers Tom and James Monaghan bought it for US$500 (RM1,956) and later renamed it Domino's.

There are now more than 14,400 Domino's stores around the world.

Its stock was trading this week at a near 52-week high at about US$225 (RM880) a share.

J. Patrick Doyle, Domino's president and CEO, has said for years he wanted Domino's to be the top pizza company in the world; and a few weeks ago, finally met his goal, edging out Pizza Hut, which had been the largest chain with US$12.2bil (RM47.75bil) in global sales for 2017.

Doyle is stepping down in June. Richard Allison, president of Domino's International, is set to take over.

So what's next?

Maloney said: “If I had a crystal ball ... ”

Automated delivery seems inevitable.

“It probably won't come as fast as everybody is saying, but faster than anybody believes,” Maloney said. “We are well past the conversation now if autonomous vehicles are coming. Now, it's a question of when and how.”

So far, he added, the company has learned that customers were open to the technology.

And other pizza companies are looking into driverless tech, too. Pizza Hut, Domino's Plano, Texas-based rival said it is working with Toyota to launch a fleet of delivery trucks, that in a rendering of the future vehicles, looks like a toaster on wheels.

Ken Nisch, chairman of the retail design firm JGA in Southfield, Michigan, points out that while Domino's technology tells a good story, it also, ultimately, may be aimed at reducing its future operating expenses by cutting labour costs.

The company – and others like it – are trying to build a runway to artificial intelligence and automation, he said. To do that, it has to get customers comfortable with technology and get the company ready for a digital interface instead of a human one.

“It takes the biggest variable out, which is labour,” he said.

Retailers, Nisch said, are moving in a direction that uses more voice recognition and activation that makes it easier for customers to make purchases and gives the company more information about the buyer.

He added that it looks like Domino's is putting their investment in technology.

In response, Domino's said that a high-tech future may mean fewer jobs to take phone orders or deliver pizza, but it also means more jobs in tech to keep the innovations – and orders – coming in, and the company's website promises that more technology is “coming soon.”

If only Dom could tell us what it is. — Detroit Free Press/Tribune News Service

https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2...ival-pizza-hut/

Despite Proton saying no to Bitcoin

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 — Proton Holdings said today it will not accept Bitcoin as payment for its cars, after a dealer made waves by offering to accept the virtual currency that has taken the financial world by storm.

Despite the company’s position, however, the dealer from Seri Kembangan said he does not plan to withdraw his offer to accept the cryptocurrency as a form of payment at his outlet.

He claimed he had to resort to such tactics in a bid to drive flagging sales at his dealership.

“I am just trying this approach to go by this difficult period and true enough since last Thursday I have been receiving more inquiries about purchasing cars through Bitcoin,” the owner of Anjur Kayangan Auto Sdn Bhd, who only wanted to be known as Tony, told Malay Mail.

“After advertising about the Bitcoin service, we have been getting at least 10 to 20 walk-in customers asking about the service,” he added.

After putting up the banner on Bitcoin service on Thursday, Tony said Proton told him to take it down the next day, but claimed no further information was given by the national car manufacturer aside from that order.

“I have taken down the banner, but I am still offering the service as you can see that I am advertising Bitcoin as a payment method on the doors to my outlet,” Tony said.

Unlike normal currencies, the value of one unit of Bitcoin — 1 BTC — has no intrinsic value, since it is not backed by any physical assets, or guaranteed by a sovereign government or central bank.

Instead, its value depends solely on its acceptance as a currency, and the public’s confidence in Bitcoin.

Despite this, Bitcoin has surged in both popularity and value in recent times, reaching nearly US$20,000 (RM79,950) at the end of 2017. In 2013, it was worth just US$23.

The currency’s extreme volatility led Bank Negara Malaysia to announce in January 2014 that it was not legal tender in the country.

According to Tony, buyers who wish to purchase cars through Bitcoin at his outlet could do so by transferring the amount for a downpayment or even the total price of a desired car model to his personal Bitcoin wallet.

However, he said Bitcoin buyers will be charged an extra two per cent of the invoiced amount as a buffer for volatility.

Besides offering the cryptocurrecy service, Tony said his other payment methods were just like at any other car dealers.

“I am just trying this approach because Proton cars are doing badly in the market. There also talks by Proton Holdings to close down underperforming dealers so this (offering Bitcoin) is my last step before I close shop,” he said.

According to him, sales for Proton cars at his outlet and at several other outlets were now under 10 transactions a month compared to about 100 monthly sales prior the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) in 2014.

In a statement issued today, Proton said it did not recognise the Bitcoin payment method and was suspending the operations of the “dealer” (Tony) pending further investigation.

Proton said that while it encourages innovative ways to increase sales, promotional activities must adhere to its guidelines and be endorsed by the major shareholder of the car manufacturer.

In an accompanying statement, Proton said it recorded 70,991 in sales last year compared to 72,291 units sold in 2016.

It attributed this to lower demand from the taxi industry.

“In order for us to pick up our sales numbers, we shall be taking further steps for more attractive consumer campaigns, and improvement of product and service quality,” Proton vice president of sales and marketing Abdul Rashid Musa said.

sos

Cops: Mat Lajak stealing rental bikes

MELAKA: It started as an ambitious bike-rental project, but it almost immediately became a boon for the notorious Mat Lajak groups here instead.

These bicycle racers have stolen at least 24 Ofo Melaka Eco bicycles, which are part of a 500-bicycle fleet launched by Beijing-based bike-rental company Ofo Inc, and converted them into racing bikes.

The bicycle-sharing service debuted here in August in line with the state government’s efforts to promote the cycling culture and make Melaka an eco-friendly city.

But the efforts have been hampered by the actions of these unscrupulous youths who have no qualms vandalising and stealing the bicycles.

Melaka’s top cop Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan confirmed that the bicycle racing menace, which was first uncovered in Johor, has now spread to Melaka.

Expressing his disappointment over such acts, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the number of stolen bikes could be higher as some had gone unreported.

“It is our intention to provide value to tourists and it is also in line with the state’s green technology practices. It’s a shame the bicycles were stolen,” Idris told The Star yesterday.

Founded in Beijing three years ago, Ofo operates more than 10 million yellow-coloured bicycles in 180 cities worldwide.

In Melaka, it has placed some 500 bicycles at strategic tourist hotspots including Menara Taming Sari, Taman Rempah, Dataran 1Malaysia, Melaka International Trade Centre and the Rural Transformation Centre in Sungai Rambai, Jasin.

The bikes have a QR code that users scan (with their smartphones) to pay, unlock the bike and ride, at rates as low as RM1 per hour. First-time users are offered a free trial of two hours.

The first theft was reported on Aug 4, a day after the launching of the bike rental service that was attended by Idris, State Secretary Datuk Seri Naim Abu Bakar, Mayor Datuk Zainal Husin, Ofo Eco Green Asia Pacific business head Lawrence Cao and Malaysia Eco Green Ofo managing director Eric Li.

A police report was lodged after 20 bicycles from Jalan Kota Melaka were stolen.

On Oct 16, a 32-year-old supervisor lodged a police report that four bicycles were stolen at Taman Melaka Raya.

Melaka Historic City Council publicity officer Ricky Tan said some faked the registration for the bicycle service by using fake e-mails before making away with the bicycles.

He said stones and blunt objects were used to damage the lock that had been installed with GPS and the thieves repainted the bicycles to avoid detection.

“We have heard that the bicycles are being used for racing purposes and some have ended up in rural areas,” Tan said.

DCP Abdul Jalil said his men regularly stopped and inspected the cyclists and would make them undergo urine tests.

“We also contacted their parents and advised them to monitor their children’s night activities,” he said.

“The parents should also check where their children got their bicycles from.”

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2017...ycles-to-use-f/

HK patient left on operating table for hours

Hong Kong patient left on operating table for hours after doctor leaves to perform surgery at another hospital
Queen Mary Hospital has launched a probe after an employee alleged that a senior surgeon left a patient on the operating table for three hours in the middle of a liver transplant because he had to perform a separate surgery in another hospital.

Dr Kelvin Ng Kwok-Chai was said to have been supervising Dr Tiffany Wong Cho-Lam, the patient’s chief surgeon, who had lower seniority in the centre, according to a report by Chinese-language newspaper Apple Daily. Ng practises privately and works part-time for the hospital’s liver transplant centre, and is therefore eligible to work for other hospitals.

On October 13, the day of the operation, a liver from a deceased donor was reportedly extracted at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin at 2pm.

It was then transferred to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam, where the recipient, a woman suffering from liver failure, was waiting.

Ng, also a part-time associate professor in the University of Hong Kong’s department of surgery, was said to have left the theatre without providing details at 3.25pm, when the recipient’s abdomen had been “opened”, with her original liver not yet removed.

The donor’s liver reached Queen Mary about five minutes after Ng left.

Wong and another participating surgeon also left the theatre after examining the liver. The recipient was then monitored by the nursing staff and the anaesthetist, according to the report.

Before he left, Ng was said to have told others he would be back at 5pm, but he failed to show up by then. The nursing staff at Queen Mary paged him and Wong.

Ng reportedly replied through a nurse, who said the doctor was performing surgery at another hospital. Wong did not reply, the report said.

At about 6.30pm, Ng returned to Queen Mary. The other surgeons also returned at unspecified times. The transplant was completed at about 10pm.

The recipient was stable after the surgery, a hospital spokesman said on Wednesday.

The spokesman said an employee made a report on October 18 that a liver transplant on October 13 had been “paused” for a period of time.

“The hospital is very concerned about the [employee’s] report and has launched an investigation,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman did not elaborate, saying that a probe was under way, adding that if there were unnecessary delays that affected the safety of a patient and the quality of a surgery, the hospital would take the matter seriously.

Ng and Wong could not be reached by the Post on Wednesday.

The centre’s director, Professor Lo Chung-mau, also chief of HKU’s liver transplant division, said that generally speaking a liver transplant surgery could be paused for three to four hours for various reasons.

But he described the reason in this case as “unsatisfactory”, as the operation was paused while waiting for a surgeon.

Lo said that the chief surgeon could have made a better decision.

“Dr Wong could have sought help from another doctor rather than waiting for Dr Ng, even though the patient was assessed to be stable at the time,” he said.

Lo added that Ng had served in an assisting role, not supervising, in the surgery.

He did not comment on whether it was appropriate for Ng to leave during the course of an operation.

“Not all doctors could stay from the beginning till the end, it really depends on the manpower arrangement,” Lo said.

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/regional/20...gery-at-anothe/

Man arrested for throwing paint

BANGKOK: Be careful where you park your car and think twice before deciding to react to anything that upsets you. That could be the message after an incident in Samut Prakan on Wednesday.

Police detained a man who confessed that he damaged a black Toyota sedan and splashed orange paint on it out of anger after finding the car had blocked the exit from his house and he could not run an errand in his own vehicle.

Police who were alerted about the incident rushed to an alley on Teparak Road in Muang district at about noon and met Pisai Sawannasai, 59, owner of the Toyota sedan who complained that his vehicle had been vandalised.

At the scene, police found that a side window glass as well as the licence plate were broken.

Pisai told police that he parked his car without noticing that it blocked entrance to the property. When he returned after about half an hour, he found the car had been vandalised.

“I was wrong that my car blocked somebody’s way, but I think this was an overreaction. I will not tolerate this, I’ve already sought legal action against the wrongdoer,” Pisai said.

A witness, water vendor Kallaya Phetchnoi, 46, told police that she saw a man try but fail to drive a car out of a house that was blocked by Pisai’s car. The man then went around to find the owner but could not find him.

Looking angry and upset, he returned to his house and came out again with a baton with which he hit Pisai’s car.

After that, he threw orange paint on the vehicle. Police invited the man, who was later identified as Khao Sangjan, 54, to the police station.

Khao reportedly confessed to vandalising Pisai’s car out of anger because he could get his car out of the house.

After committing the offences, he travelled by taxi to run his errand, then returned to his house before being summonsed by police. Khao was charged with malicious damage. – The Nation/Asia News Network

http://www.thestar.com.my/news/regional/20...dly-parked-car/

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia joins the chorus of call for global elimination of nuclear weapons by signing a treaty in the on going 72nd United Nations General Assembly in New York yesterday.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman signed on behalf of Malaysia in the “Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons”, sending a strong political message that nuclear weapons are unacceptable.

By signing it also Malaysia joins other States from the international community in calling for the “complete and total elimination as soon as possible”, according to a statement issued by the ministry.

“This treaty is legally sound, feasible to implement, and strengthens the global norms against nuclear weapons. The treaty is inclusive, with pathways open for other states to become a party in the future.

“It is hoped that the political and legal impact of this treaty on nuclear disarmament will provide the much needed direction for further initiatives aimed at the elimination of nuclear weapons and the maintenance of a world free of nuclear weapons,” the statement added.

The treaty was the outcome of two conference sessions that were called to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons leading towards their total elimination from Mar 27 to 31 and June 15 to July 7 this year at the UN in New York.

The conference was attended by UN member States and representatives of civil society organisations.

Malaysia had played a constructive role throughout the negotiations on the treaty, including working with other States to further refine the language of Articles 5 to 7 of the Treaty on National Implementation, Victim Assistance and Environmental Remediation, and International Cooperation and Assistance.

Malaysia also had suggested several constructive amendments to further strengthen provisions under Article 11 (Settlement of Disputes) and Article 18 (Relationship with other agreements) of the treaty, the statement revealed.

“By signing this treaty, Malaysia reaffirms its unwavering commitment and support for the longstanding principle of general and complete disarmament, in particular nuclear disarmament and measures towards achieving a nuclear weapons-free world.

“It is our hope that other States will also sign this Treaty, and that all will work together towards its entry into force, which is when 50 States submit their instrument of ratification,” it added.

The treaty was mooted in the 70th UN general assembly in 2015 where a resolution titled “Taking Forward Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament Negotiations” was adopted.

It mandated the convening of an Open Ended Working Group (OEWG) in 2016 to discuss effective legal measures, legal provisions and norms needed to attain a world without nuclear weapons.

In response to the recommendations in the OEWG report, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 71/258 on Dec 23 last year of the same title, which calls for the convening of the two negotiation conference sessions in New York this year.

The first session from Mar 27 to 31 served as an avenue for UN member States to suggest the framework, issues and concerns the treaty should address. Based on the inputs, the first draft of the treaty was released on May 22 and served as the basis for discussion for the second session of the conference from June 15 to July 7.

The Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) were of the view that the treaty did not add value and will be counter-productive towards nuclear disarmament. The NWS remain convinced that the nuclear disarmament should be conducted through a step-by-step approach.

The Treaty contains 20 articles that cover the pertinent aspects relating to the issue of nuclear weapons prohibition – such as prohibitions, declarations, safeguards, measures of elimination, victim assistance and environmental remediation, international cooperation and assistance, meeting of State Parties, amendments, and settlement of disputes.

Despite the overwhelming desire to adopt the treaty by consensus, it was put to a vote at the request of the Netherlands on July 7 and a total of 122 member states, including Malaysia, voted in favour of the adoption, 1 voted against and 1 abstained.

Following the adoption of the treaty, representatives of the United States, United Kingdom and France issued a joint statement stating that they “do not intend to sign, ratify, or even be party to the treaty.”

https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2017/09/...-disarmament-un
Grieving mum says if suspects are guilty

Keramat tahfiz fire
KUALA LUMPUR: “If the seven suspects are indeed guilty, they should be sentenced to death.”

Those were the words of 38-year old Ermayani Normatias, who had expressed her anguish over the fate of her son Indrakurniawan Mohd Amirul, who is fighting for his life at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital burn care intensive care unit (ICU).

Indrakurniawan, 11, was a survivor of the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz school fire. Currently under sedation, the boy sustained 20 per cent burns from the neck to his buttocks. He also suffered burns on his hands and a broken leg after leaping from the school’s third floor.

Ermayani, who was commenting on the arrest of seven suspects allegedly responsible for the incident, said the culprits must not be let off lightly.

“I am shocked that they are just teenagers, but capable of committing such terrible act. They are like extremists and terrorists.

“It is absurd that they have such a mentality at a young age. I read that two suspects have past criminal records but they were freed and brazenly committed yet another crime. There is no guarantee they will change for the better.

“The authorities must investigate what had influenced them to carry out such an act. A death penalty will serve a lesson to others,” said Ermayani who works as a cleaner.

Speaking to reporters when met at the hospital, a tearful Ermayani said she had been having sleepless nights over Indrakurniawan’s condition.

Indrakurniawan is the eldest child of three and has been studying at the school since January.

“I am very exhausted and haven’t had proper rest since Thursday. I have taken leave from work to be at the hospital and have been waiting here every day to be updated by the doctors of his condition.

“When I get home, I want to sleep but I can’t because I am worried sick. My body is aching but I need to be strong for my son,” Ermayani said.

https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2017/09/...lty-they-should
