is your garden wall built on a T concrete footing?

all the books i read say that a wall, even if non load bearing, should be built on a flat concrete footing with height same as wall's thickness and width that is twice of the thickness, and buried 18" deep.

http://www.spikevm.com/calculators/images/footing_wall.jpg

but, my contractor say no need lah.

wondering if i should insist.

also, walls are suppose to be minimum 8" thick. my single terrace house main walls are only 5-6"!

how high the walls, how far the roof?

hi all

i have a single storey terrace end lot in an old taman in jb.

i am dying to know,

1. can i detached my roof about 2m from my neighbor?
yes, kind of make me a stand alone. this is to prevent cat burglars coming from neighbors roofs.

2. how high can i raise my fence walls?
back (ada backlane), side (3m pathway), and front (not main road). i know 6' is ok. thinking of raising my side to 15', to block the western sun

3. how high can my autogate be?
i know 6' ok. 7' boleh?

4. can i have an overhead beam across my gate, say at 7feet?

5. how low can i dig into my property?
thinking of rebuilding the entire house at maybe 3 feet lower

6. can i build a 2nd level or just a 1.5 level loft?

7. can i tear down the whole house, and rebuild with shipping containers?

8. how far out can i extend a permanent or retractable awning?

9. how far out can i cantilever?

10. what are the setbacks? ie. how close can i build to my perimeter?

i know i should talk to a pro. architect? what kind of appointment do i make? general consultation? how much will it cost?
