Transcend MTS800 M.2 2280 128GB SATA SSD Review

M.2 SSD is the he latest NGFF storage solution. It provides outstanding performance and proven reliability for product operation. Today we’re reviewing the Transcend MTS800, which uses newer M.2 technology – a storage solution that screws directly into my ROG CROSSHAIR VI HERO motherboard directly.

Specifications:

Transcend’s lineup of MTS800 M.2 SSDs is offered ranging from 32GB to 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. The drive that we received contains a total storage capacity of 128GB. Running on the SATA3 6Gb/s interface in a M.2 form factor, the drive is specified to operate at sequential speeds of up to 500MB/s in read and 450 MB/s in write. In terms of 4k random performance, it can deliver up to 75,000 IOPS in both read and write speeds.

The Transcend MTS800 is neither fancy matte Black PCB, nor a heat sink – just a sticker with a barcode, model name, and the serial number of the SSD. On this side you could see the Transcend TS6500 controller with 2 of the 4 Micron branded 20nm NAND chips.

Installation is easy. You just open the screw, insert the SSD in the M.2 slot on the motherboard, press it to match the screw hold and then screw it.

Performance Test
CrystalDiskInfo is a HDD/SSD health monitoring utility. It displays basic HDD (also SSD and USB-HDD) information, monitors S.M.A.R.T. values and disk temperature. It will also display the S.M.A.R.T data as a list so you can see the specific issue that a hard drive may have.

CrystalDiskMark Benchmark
Crystal Disk Mark is a standard storage benchmarking software and is widely used through the industry. Test size is set to 100 MB and 1GB. Results from the Sequential and 4K Queue Depth 32 benchmarks will be taken for both Read and Write.

The Transcend MTS800 is a M.2 SSD featuring great performance across the board. CrystalDiskMark recorded as read speed of 561 MB/s. This is almost spot-on the specification. CrystalDiskMark also recorded as write speed of 205 MB/s. This is also almost spot-on the specification, but quite a bit lower than some of the other drives available in this price range. M.2 SSDs are a convenient thing, and Transcend’s MTS800 here is a perfectly fine example that performs as rated and is priced competitively. If you need something compact or something that won’t clutter up your setup then this M.2 from Transcend is highly recommended.

Hands on DrivePro 110 dash cam

The dashcam has become an essential vehicle accessory primarily because of solid evidence that it aids with self-protection. Transcend recently released its newest dashcams DrivePro 110 equipped with a Sony high-sensitivity imaging sensor, and capable of recording Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) videos at 30 fps. Its built-in Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology balances the light and dark areas of captured images, ensuring that every critical shot is as clear as possible. A built-in Li-Polymer battery ensures uninterrupted power to the device. Video will continue to be recorded and stored in the event of an accident or when the engine is off.

There are four buttons that help you navigate through its menu, which is pretty simplistic and straightforward. The DrivePro 110 also records videos in chunks, and you can decide whether each one is one, three or five minutes long. There is also the option to take time-lapse videos, with a shot being taken every one, two or four seconds. And like most dashcams, when it runs out of space, the oldest chunk will be overwritten to make space for the newer ones.

The left side is where the microSD card goes. You'll also notice the red button. This is the 'emergency' button. When pressed, it will leave the currently recording segment untouched when the microSD card runs out of space, ensuring that the footage will always be there. This is useful when you really run into an emergency, like an accident, so that the footage is kept as evidence if necessary.

There are also two types of easily attachable mounts. I got the suction mount, but you can also purchase the adhesive one separately. Transcend does give you a 16GB microSD card to use with the DrivePro 110, which is a High Endurance memory card built of top-tier MLC NAND flash chips, and tested under harsh environmental conditions. . You do not need to spend extra money and effort in seeking a compatible and reliable flash card to make your dashcam work.

The right side is where the Micro-USB port is located. The supplied cable is right-angled upward, so that the cables can be hidden away behind the headliner of the car. The installation is easy. After the DrivePro 110 is mounted on the windshield and connected to the lighter socket, further driver involvement is not required. When the vehicle’s engine is turned on, video files are automatically recorded to the included Transcend High Endurance 16GB microSDHC MLC memory card.

Opening that, you’ll see that it’s pretty feature-rich. Enabling time-lapse video recording means you can get right to the heart of the matter without needing to view hours of incident-free footage. There’s also a G-sensor, as well as a driver fatigue alert that doesn’t make use of the G-sensor, but instead just reminds you to take a break every one, two, three or four hours. The headlight reminder is to reminds you to turn on your headlights if the DrivePro 110 thinks it’s getting dark outside. The DrivePro 110 may be one of Transcend’s budget models, but it is no bargain-basement dash cam. It has a Full-HD 1080p lens and some interesting extra features, including a speed camera warning, and it even comes with a High Endurance 16GB microSD card in the box. What's most important, though, is the quality of its footage. Transcend's DrivePro 110 dashcam utilizes a Sony image sensor to provide high-resolution images with extremely fine tonal gradation even in low light. If you can afford, you can consider the more expansive DrivePro 130, which comes with Wi-Fi connectivity to allow view and download videos and images using the accompanying DrivePro app on your Android on iOS device. For me, I still prefer the manual way with the DrivePro 110 – to remove its microSD card whenever you want to view its content. The DrivePro 110 is a well-designed, effective and inconspicuous recorder of your travels and safety device.

As our consumption of data increases, so does our need for storage capacity for that data. For those who may not trust the cloud, or choose to keep the versatility literally in hand, a portable hard drive is still a very good option. It solves the need for portable and secure data movement. The Transcend StoreJet 25A3 comes in sleek packaging, with a clear plastic windows shows the drive visible from the front, with the main features and specifications noted. Using Transcend’s exclusive shock-absorbing suspension damper system, the StoreJet 25A3 effectively protects its internal hard drive by softening the force of impact in case of accidental slips or falls.

The particular note showing on the front is shock resistance, one touch backup, file encryption, and 3-year limited warranty.

The rear of the box provides more details, such as specifications, operation system compatibility, and storage capacity.

The front of the StoreJet 25A3 is straightforward, finished entirely in a glossy piano black with patterns and the Transcend logo at the bottom. It’s quite minimalist, not a very large package at all.

The only connector you will find on the StoreJet 25A3 is USB 3.0. Next to it is a power button which is used to activate the back-up function of the device, though you need to have the software for it installed on the host system for this function to work.

You will find the Transcend Elite software on the hard drive itself. It is a simple but effective application that allows you to backup, restore, encrypt, and sync bookmarked information as long as it includes the use of the hard drive itself. The program checks for the presence of the drive and will not start if the unit is not connected to the host system.

The Encryption windows hold both the en- and decryption functionality. You may pick a file or folder to encrypt. A status bar will keep you in the loop on the duration of each operation.

The StoreJet 25H3 is a portable hard drive from Transcend’s ruggedized line of portable hard drives and its claim to fame of course is that it is shock resistant and drop tested to comply with U.S. military drop-test standard. In addition to its rugged design, the StoreJet 25H3 is also a performer as it includes USB 3.0 support, so you’ll be able to take advantage of the full performance of the included hard drive as well.

First impression

The StoreJet 25H3P doesn’t look slim like other consumer grade hard drives as it features a sophisticated three-stage shock protection system. Along with an anti-slip rubber enclosure, this system incorporates a reinforced hard casing that evenly distributes the force of an impact, and an internal hard drive suspension damper as a last line of defense.

In the box

Open up the box, you’ll see the StoreJet 25H3 itself, a USB 3.0 cable, a quick start guide, and a warranty card.

Closer look

The StoreJet 25H3 looks like the most rugged portable hard drive I have ever owned. I like the vibrant purple silicone casing that protects the drive from impacts. The grey and purple rubber outer case also makes the drive very slip-resistant.

The drive comes with the microUSB 3.0 connector and has a one-touch button to trigger a backup process.

The StoreJet 25H3 comes ready to plug in and use, but you can also use the software which is on the drive to enhance the functionality. The Transcend Elite Data management program allows you to create backups, encrypt data, sync bookmarks and restore your backups if you lose the data. When you have created a backup you can set it to run using the one touch backup (OTB) button. The RecoverX software successfully recovered some images we’d deleted from the drive, with the StoreJet Toolbox allowing you to format the drive.

Benchmark

Transcend claims the StoreJet 25H3 transfer speeds up to 90MB/s, let’s find out if it is true.

I ran the drive through the CrystalDiskMark software using USB 3.0 connection. Taking a look at performance here, we can see that performance for the drive tops out at around 108 MB/s sequential writes and 109 MB/s sequential reads, which is generally about the top performance found on a 5400RPM notebook hard drive. USB 3.0 is rated at up to 5Gbps, which is roughly around 400 MB/s after accounting for some encoding overhead, so it’s more than capable of handing the maximum performance of the hard drive.

Final thought

The StoreJet 25H3 is one rugged hard drive for people are travelling on the go or people who do not pay attention on how to handle a hard drive with care.

Transcend StoreJet 25A3 is a 1 terabyte portable drive offering anti-shock protection without sacrificing its slender good looks. What really stands out for me is its Internal Suspension System, a unique three-layer shock protection system.

It is perfectly designed to prevent damage from accidental slips or falls during travel. This feature-packed drive is equipped with a Super Speed USB 3.0 interface, a convenient auto-backup button and up to a full terabyte of storage capacity.

You can find a 2.5 inched SATA HHD in there and it’s compatible with Windows and Mac operating system. It features USB 3.0, which is 10x faster than USB 2.0. It suits the needs for people who are looking to take good amount of data with them and have a transfer at top speed.

In the box, beside the drive itself, you will be getting the USB 3.0 cable, the manual, and the warranty card. Transcend offers 3-year warranty, which is about the longest we’ve seen in the industry.

The drive itself is quite slim and easy to carry. It’s got nice mat finish on the bottom and a glossy look on the top with pattern and Transcend logo.

Over here on the side you can see the USB3.0 connection. You can just get the cable and attach it, plug it in. That provides all the power it needs and you don’t need an adopter for that. Just the USB cable will do. The cable is plenty long to be using with a laptop or most desktop applications.

And you can also find the two purposes button. Uses for one touch backup, as well as one touch re-connect.

Let’s go to the software now. The included software is rather comprehensive. With the RecoveRX, you can bring back your lost photos. For example, if you deleted them and you want to get them back, also there is a capability of formatting the drive. You can encrypt files, so there is some file protection function.

And the Elite Backup & software enables you to schedule backup. So if you want to do regular backups or manually once a while yourself, you have the options to do that. It’s pretty simple and straight forward. The Elite Data Management software does work very well. It’s very powerful and easy to use with Transcend storage.

Looking at the benchmarks, the numbers are very good across the board.

Doing a CrystalDiskMark also agrees all those results. You do get top-flight performance from the StoreJet 25A3.

The StoreJet 25A3 is a very good looking piece. I really like the One-Touch backup and the performance of it was actually very good. The read and write speeds were exactly what you’d expect from a high-end 2.5 inched drive. Another nice thing I found during the testing was the fact that there was very little if any vibration to the unit, it made absolutely no noise. You really couldn’t tell it was on unless you were holding it. Performance wise, you can’t beat it. Feature wise, very good. The software is very powerful. It’s going to get the job done 99% of what you want to do. Really recommend it.

I had been looking for a high capacity portable drive compatible with my HTC 10, so that I can access the files with my phone from the external drive without using a laptop.
