Govt to go ahead with plans to close roads

PUTRAJAYA: The government will go ahead with their proposal of closing roads to allow motorcyclists to race to their hearts' content despite the criticisms and objections against the suggestion.

Federal Territories deputy minister Datuk Dr Loga Bala Mohan said the ministry is looking at all the possibilities on how to ensure the event can be done properly and successfully.

"We are also gathering input from all the comments and feedback given by the public on the event to prevent any mishaps or damage to any infrastructure," he told reporters after handing out assistance grants to the various Federal Territories sports associations today.

Loga Bala added that the respective local council under the ministry were conducting studies and discussion to determine the best available location and time to conduct the event.

"The road closure will be at the Federal Territories – Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan – but time and location will be determined based on the findings by the councils," he said.

Loga Bala was asked on the proposal by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor in February to close certain parts of the capital to allow motorcyclists to race as a move to curb 'Mat Rempits' who race in residential and commercial areas.

Tengku Adnan mentioned that the move could also help curb the illegal betting that came with the racing as some race organisers were said to offer girls as prizes for the race winners.

Since the proposal was announced, it received much criticisms from the public with most objecting as they felt the government had the intention of legalising illegal activities.

On the administrative assistance grant, Loga Bala said it would provide great assistance to each of the FT sports associations in better managing their sports administrative activities.

Car prices on track for 30% drop by 2018 – Azalina

Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, a minister in the Prime Minister’s department, revealed that vehicle prices are on track to be reduced by 30% come 2018. According to the New Straits Times, the minister said in a written reply to Lim Lip Eng, the Segambut MP, that prices will be reduced in stages. Earlier, Lim had quizzed the minister about the government’s promises to reduce car prices and reduce toll rates during GE13.

“Various efforts have been undertaken, including the granting of incentives to reduce the amount of excise duty payable to companies of car manufacturers involved in local value-added automotive components,” she said. “These incentives are seen to be beneficial as the total price reduction recorded in 2013 was 3%, followed by 7% in 2014 and 2.7% in 2015.”

Turning her attention to ongoing discussions about toll rate hikes, Azalina said that since 2008, the government has been in negotiations with highway concessionaires to reduce the financial strain put on users by increasing toll rates. “The negotiation is aimed at finding the best mechanism to ease the burden of tolls to achieve a win-win situation for all parties involved, namely the government, concessionaires and consumers,” she said.

“Among the results of the negotiations to date are; to postpone an increase in highway toll rates since the past eight years, from 2008 until October 14, 2015,” she exclaimed. The minister highlighted that other results from the government’s negotiations include the abolishment and early closure of eight tolls on six highways, reducing toll rates for highways and improving concession agreement terms so that toll rate hikes are no longer automatically justified.

Pahang is the biggest debtor

KUALA LUMPUR: Thirteen state governments have yet to settle debts amounting to more than RM16bil to the Federal Government.

Finance Ministry records show that as of Dec 31 last year, the state governments collectively owe the Treasury RM16.824bil.

“The Federal Government had given loans to the state governments to finance projects for basic amenities for the rakyat, such as water supply projects, low-cost public housing, industrial projects and others.

“These projects are the Government’s continuous efforts to improve the people's standard of living," the ministry said in a written response to Teresa Kok (DAP–Seputeh) in Parliament on Tuesday.

Kok had asked about the details of state government debts to the Federal Government that had yet to be paid.

Pahang is the biggest debtor with RM2,922.98mil still unpaid, followed by Sabah (RM2,608.46mil) and Sarawak (RM2,531.25mil).

Johor and Penang owe the least, with debts of RM249.01mil and RM69.36mil respectively.
