KJ: Mass Supply Of COVID-19 Vaccine Delayed To July

With the number of daily COVID-19 cases hitting record highs this week, the government is ramping up the vaccination process so that the country can achieve herd immunity as soon as possible.

However, that plan has just hit a snag.Supply has been coming in slowThe mass supply of COVID-19 vaccination has reportedly been pushed back to a month, Code Blue reported.

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Khairy Jamaluddin told the website that a total of 2.5 million weekly doses of COVID-19 vaccines will be delivered to Malaysia from July onwards, which is one month off his initial projection.

Out of the 2.5 million doses, two million will be from Pfizer-BioNTech, while 500,000 doses will be from Sinovac.

The supply has been coming in slow.

In May and June, local pharmaceutical company Pharmaniaga Berhad will ramp up the supply for the Sinovac vaccine, although Khairy did not mention the specifics of the deliveries.

"So, we will be ramping up. Starting from now, with the Sinovac and then continuous delivery of Pfizer that comes in every week, as well as the AstraZeneca delivery," he was quoted as saying.

This week, Khairy revealed that the country will be receiving a total of 259,740 doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

As for the AstraZeneca vaccine, Khairy said that Malaysia is still waiting for the delivery of 6.4 million doses that were directly procured from AstraZeneca itself. Below targetBack in April, Khairy said that the government plans to administer over 160,000 doses daily so that they could complete the national vaccination programme by the end of the year.

However, as of Tuesday (18 May), only a total of two million doses of COVID-19 vaccination have been administered so far, The Star Online reported.

If the government wants to hit their vaccination target, they would have to pick up the pace.

Breaking: Proton suspends bookings of X50s

KUALA LUMPUR (April 15): Proton Holdings Bhd has seen over 40,000 bookings for the X50 since its launch in October 2020 till the end of March 2021.

A Proton spokesperson told The Edge that while the group had expected the X50 to garner a lot of interest, the actual response and subsequent demand was far beyond its projections.

The spokesperson noted in an email response that out of the 40,000 units booked, 95% of them were for the sports utility vehicle's higher variants.

“The X50 Standard had the fewest bookings, accounting for only 5%. Due to these circumstances, we decided to temporarily suspend bookings only on the Standard variant of the X50 to focus on the larger population of bookings.

"While we want to be able to meet all our customers demands, the simple math of the supply and demand equation requires us to concentrate on the largest base of our X50 customers, which in this case is for the non-Standard variants. The bookings for all other variants continue as normal and we look forward to opening up for the standard variant when delivery is stabilised,” the spokesperson stated.

As of March, Proton has delivered over 11,000 units, and production capacity has surpassed the 3,000 mark, he added.

Based on Proton’s current projections, the wait time for the X50 is about six months.

“We are attempting to shorten this with various measures and the temporary suspension of the Standard variant is one of them,” Proton’s spokesperson revealed.

When asked about the severity in the backlog of X50 orders, he said that its has been addressing this as a key priority since the SUV's launch.

He added that Proton is working closely with its vendors to increase capacity across the line.

At end-March, it was able to deliver over 3,500 units, which Proton said is above the initial planned capacity, adding that it is well on its way to increasing this number for the rest of the year.

While Proton’s spokesperson declined to disclose any sales target, citing the reason that the carmaker’s major shareholder is a public-listed entity, he said that Proton is happy with the consumers' response with the X50 and the carmaker expects that model to be a signifant volume contributor not just for 2021, but for the coming years ahead.

According to its website, the X50 — which retails at between RM79,200 amd RM105,300 — comes in four variants, the Standard, Executive, Premium and Flagship.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson said the highest production model for Proton in 2020 was the Saga, which is built in Shah Alam. The Persona and X70 are the second and third highest produced models, both of which are built in Tanjung Malim.

The X family which include the X50 and X70 are manufactured in a new production line that is part of an RM1 billion investment in the Tanjung Malim plant.

“This sophisticated new line features the latest technology and incorporates new processes that allow for much higher quality as well as increased capacity. The former is very clear as our Global Customer Product Audit (GCPA) on this line has been above the Geely standard and continues to raise the bar on product quality. This line has been designed to allow for a more elastic production process which means we can easily move up or down in terms of capacity.

“We are currently readjusting to ensure that we get optimum utilization so as to meet the demand for both the X50 and the X70. Covid-19 brought great disruption to the automotive supply chain which is predominantly in the Klang Valley, and the area most affected by the pandemic. This was a key choke point. However, we have been able to maintain steady levels of production since February and are on course towards increasing our output over the coming months,” stated the spokesperson.

Shares in DRB-Hicom Bhd, which owns a 50.1% stake in Proton, closed 2.59% or five sen lower at RM1.88, valuing it at RM3.64 billion.

Timbalan menteri mohon maaf tertidur pada majlis graduasi

Ahli Parlimen Kuala Pilah Eddin Syazlee Shith memohon maaf susulan video tular yang menunjukkan beliau tertidur ketika berlangsungnya majlis Khatam Al-Quran dan Graduasi Huffaz di Palm Mall di Seremban, Negeri Sembilan semalam.

Menurut Pegawai Tugas Khas Farahiah Zubir, Timbalan Menteri Kerja Raya itu keletihan dan kurang sihat namun bagi memenuhi undangan jemputan beliau tetap hadir ke majlis tersebut.

“Untuk makluman Datuk Eddin Syazlee telah memohon maaf kerana tertidur pada acara tersebut. Beliau makan ubat sebelum ke majlis tersebut tetapi tetap menggagahkan diri untuk memenuhi jemputan.

“Alhamdulilah pada majlis itu Datuk Eddin Syazlee telah meluluskan pemasangan penghawa dingin di Dewan Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuala Pilah dan menyumbang sedikit dana bagi membantu pihak sekolah memperoleh bas untuk kegunaan pelajar,” katanya ketika dihubungi Bernama.

Menteri langgar Akta Polis jika campur tangan isu pertukaran pegawai - Patriot

Menteri Dalam Negeri Hamzah Zainuddin kemungkinan melanggar Akta Polis sekiranya campur tangan dengan arahan Ketua Polis Negara (IGP) berhubung pertukaran pegawai kanan polis, kata Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan (Patriot).

Dalam satu kenyataan hari ini, Presiden Patriot BG (Rtd) Mohamed Arshad Raji mengatakan bahawa dia mendapati bahawa laporan berita yang mendakwa Hamzah campur tangan dengan arahan itu sangat membimbangkan.

"Sekiranya tuduhan itu benar, maka menteri dalam negeri telah campur tangan dan bercanggah dengan arahan IGP dan telah melampaui batas kuasanya.

"Menghentikan pertukaran pegawai dengan alasan tatatertib yang telah diputuskan oleh IGP adalah tindakan yang tidak wajar dan melanggar Akta Polis.

"Segala usaha untuk menggagalkan apa yang dia (IGP) cuba lakukan untuk membersihkan imej pasukan itu dianggap sebagai sabotaj dan bertentangan dengan kehendak rakyat," katanya.

"IGP mempunyai hak prerogatif dalam memberi arahan dan mengawal pasukan polis dan semua pegawai dan orang di bawahnya. Itu termasuk mengenakan tindakan disiplin dan pertukaran pegawai-pegawainya," katanya.

Mohamed Arshad berkata Seksyen 4 (1) Akta Polis 1967 memberi kuasa kepada IGP dalam "kawalan dan arahan pasukan dan semua orang lain yang dilantik atau diguna khidmat untuk menjalankan tugas-tugas polis, dan hendaklah mempunyai semua kuasa yang diberi kepada seorang pesuruhjaya atau seorang Ketua Pegawai Polis."

"Akta Polis sangat jelas berkaitan dengan kuasa IGP dalam pengendalian tatatertib yang dapat dilakukan. Pemindahan pegawai dengan alasan disiplin adalah di bawah bidangnya," tambah Mohamed Arshad.

Sementara Suruhanjaya Pasukan Polis (Suruhanjaya Pasukan Polis), yang dipengerusikan oleh menteri dalam negeri, katanya, mempunyai bidang kuasa berhubung disiplin dan pemindahan hanya jika tidak ada undang-undang lain yang merangkumi perkara ini.

"Akta Polis memberikan kuasa itu kepada IGP. Oleh itu, Patriot merasakan tidak ada ahli politik, termasuk menteri dalam negeri, yang boleh campur tangan dalam kuasa IGP untuk mendisiplinkan dan memindahkan anak buahnya," katanya.

Semalam, Abdul Hamid dilaporkan memberitahu wartawan bahawa dia akan menemui Hamzah untuk menjelaskan dan meneruskan semula pelaksanaan pertukaran pegawai kanan polis yang ditangguhkan sebelum ini.

Mere words from PM mean nothing, say Sarawak lawyers

KUCHING: Lawyers have dismissed Muhyiddin Yassin’s recent assertion of Sarawak’s right to territorial status as inconsequential to the Borneo states’ desire for the restoration of their rights.

Mere words would not change a thing, said Lim Heng Choo and Simon Siah, both of whom are based in Sarawak.

Speaking to FMT, they noted that Sabah and Sarawak were still listed in the Federal Constitution as two of the 13 Malaysian states.

In order to recognise Sarawak as one of three Malaysian territories, Lim said, the Malaysia Agreement of 1963 (MA63) must be incorporated into Article 160 (2) of the constitution.

“Once the amendment is made, it also means that the annual national budget needs to be distributed equally to three regions, which are Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.

Currently, Article 160 (2) refers to the federation established under the 1957 Federation of Malaya Agreement instead of MA63.

During his visit to Kuching last week, the prime minister said he recognised Sabah and Sarawak as territories instead of states.

However, Muhyiddin also said his government might not be able to fulfil a demand from Sarawak chief minister Abang Johari Openg to amend Article 106 (2) because it lacked a two-third majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

Siah said it would take a lot of constitutional amendments to legally recognise Sarawak as a Malaysian region.

Noting that Sarawak and Sabah occupied only about a quarter of Dewan Rakyat seats, he said amending the constitution would require support from MPs representing constituencies in the peninsula.

Abdul Karim Hamzah, Sarawak’s minister of tourism, arts and culture, also recently spoke of the need to amend the constitution, but he said he appreciated Muhyiddin’s statement.

Karim is also a lawyer.

KJ: 'Keputusan sukar' pada Sept untuk wajibkan vaksin

Langkah-langkah drastik akan dilakukan termasuk mewajibkan pengambilan vaksin Covid-19 apabila kempen vaksinasi Malaysia mencapai "tahap kritikal" pada September, kata menteri penyelaras kempen itu Khairy Jamaluddin.

Khairy berkata Malaysia akan mulai menerima kemasukan vaksin pada bulan Jun terutama dari Pfizer dan Sinovac, selain penawaran vaksin akan melebihi permintaan pada bulan Jun atau Julai.

Malaysia's household debt-to-GDP ratio at new peak of 93.3% as at December 2020, says BNM

KUALA LUMPUR (March 31): Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said today Malaysia's household debt-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio had risen to a new peak of 93.3% as at December 2020, from the previous record high of 87.5% in June 2020, mainly due to the country's GDP remaining below pre-Covid-19 crisis levels and as growth in the nation’s household debt normalised to pre-pandemic levels in the second half of 2020 (2H20) as the country emerged from stringent movement control restrictions.

In BNM’s Financial Stability Review for Second Half 2020 report released today, the central bank said that a concern over high household debt is that it may lead to rapid deleveraging by households in the aftermath of a crisis, thus dampening or derailing the economic recovery....
