Advanced big bike safety training

Hi,

My son got a big bike after getting his B Full licence. that is only the start of discovery.

Biking is fun and freedom and i have been a biker myself.

i would like him to always have the attitude to ride defensively as so many things can go wrong on the road. as long as one rides with this mentality that other road users could kill you, that is 90% safety in the bag - with the balance leaving it to bike condition, roads and fate.

BMW Motorrad has a Safety 360 course in Europe but am not sure if they offer it in Malaysia or open it to non-BMW bike owners. I'm open to good local schools/academies that offer such course that thoroughly go through the practicals of rider safety.

If there are good local schools that offer such 1 or 2-day training, pls share.

Tablet for online banking

Looking to use tablets for online banking only in 2025.

Can pls recommend the best options? MY requirements 8 inch to 12-inch display, budget RM1,200. Ipad or Android or others (Chromebook/Linux devices, etc)

Chatgpt+ and Claude have suggested ipad 9th gen, so looking further afield for advice from real people.

Currently using Windows 10 laptop. But MS is going to discontinue updates from Oct 2025. so looking for alternative device that's secure to carry on banking.

any pitfalls in using tablet for this purpose? i'm security conscious and do have malware scanner/Antivirus and only download apps/software from official sources.

Hear that ipad has less incidents of hacker attacks compared to Androids.

I'm basically quite comfortable in a Windows ecosystem, but don;t want to upgrade to windows 11 and spend more than RM1200 to get new device.....my laptop is quite old already so can't upgrade to win11

Let's discuss.

Recommend a round smartwatch

Looking at the Amazfit Balance and I'm liking it. i prefer round watches. are there better ones for around the same price?

I take my doggy for walk daily and i like the device to do step count, measure heart beat and blood pressure. simple stuff like that. Can such devices last 5 years or more with proper care? Battery life would probably determine whether to keep or junk the device after a few years.....can the batteries be soldered out and replaced?

i have used other fitness watches before.....the samsung one didn;t last a year...wasted my money.....was shocked to see the backplate was simply glued to the back and came off after getting wet intermittently for some months. I suppose the newest one are still glued on - the el cheapo solution. any round smart watch with backplate screwed on with a rubber washer to keep water out?

How much is stamp duty on medical plan insurance?

If you have bought a medical insurance plan that you want to transfer to your kid to pay when he's an adult, it seems that you have to pay stamp duty on the "absolute" assignment of the policy ownership.

How much is the stamp duty in 2023 for say a policy with a lifetime limit of RM1mil? What's the percentage and how is it calculated?

The insurance company (insurer) is not a one-stop centre to handle the stamp duty payment. You have to get a form from the insurer, both dad-kid to sign form, go to the income tax office to pay the stamp duty and then go back to the insurer to submit form and supporting documents, then wait up to 2 weeks for the ownership transfer.

If yes, how much.

Is it better to create a trust and put the EPF monies in trust?

It has been said before that it's better to lump assets in a trust to avoid burdening beneficiaries with taxes.

DIY Door bell wiring

To the Electrical Sifus in this forum, pls advise....

The transformer in my original schneider door bell burnt out, so I ordered a replacement Schneider door bell from shopee.

The new one doesn;t look the same so I'm a little confused as to what to do with the two bottom blue wires that connect to the switch outside the gate. The manual appears to say the 2 blue wires should be joined with the Live wire and connect it to the L terminal on the left side of the door bell. Is that correct?

The Neutral wire goes to the N terminal. From what I have read, the Ground wire (green) doesn't need to connect to anything and can be left alone.

BTW, the Schneider door bell can be bought at Perniagaan Letrik ANS Sdn. Bhd. in Taman Paramount, PJ for RM55.

Hi,

Looking for such tyres ahead of time.

emphasis on comfort and quietness with excellent grip in dry and wet conditions. Budget of RM400 to RM700 per tyre.

The 215/60R17 is stock and I would prefer to keep the new tyres the same size as well. Too bad the new ContiComfort 7 announced today doesn't have this size.

Government hospitals - the better ones

Hello forummers,

Private healthcare is not affordable to most Malaysians, hence they have no choice but to go to govt hospitals.

While I have heard a lot of horror stories about Malaysian public healthcare, there have also been positive stories from some people seeking medical care from govt hospitals.

As a middle-aged person soon to retire, i'm wondering if there's actually a cluster of a few good govt hospitals one can patronise in the Klang valley for checkups, and other services covering various health conditions such as kidneys, liver/pancreas, digestive system, eye health (cataract operation), etc.

The nearest to me is Selayang hospital...it used to be good but has deteriorated in recent years....the mental patient brought in by police who stabbed another patient recently is the latest episode of things gone wrong there but the Health Minister has vowed to restore the hospital to what it was before...we shall see.

Crowding and the long wait plus run-down facilities are common complaints I hear. But not all govt hospitals are like that surely. As for crowding (a big no-no in Covid times), the Anwar govt said in Dec 2022 that the public can now book appointments through the Mysejahtera app. (ref: https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2022/12/...c-appointments)

In theory, this should make going to govt hospitals less troublesome. But crowds still persists maybe because the many people still aren't aware they can book appointments via the app.

Anyway, the goal of this post is this. Where are the best government hospitals to seek healthcare services in 2023? Three to five top ones would suffice.

On a related note, there are a few non-profit hospitals in Malaysia. How are the charges like compared to going private? I wont mind paying if the fees are affordable (by middle-class standards). Heard a lot of good things about Beacon Hospital in PJ. It declares it's the only private hospital in Malaysia that provides CSR funds for chemotherapy and radiotherapy for Malaysian patients who cannot afford to pay for their cancer treatments.

DIY white material in between bathroom tiles

Hi,

Planning to patch back the white stuff in between tiles in one of my bathrooms. some of it as come off after three years and would like to restore them.

Is that white cement or putty filla? Correct me if i'm wrong ....but if use putty filla, it will come out after a while because it absorbs water. Would white cement be the correct choice?

How do the pros do it? From what i can see, the easiest way to patch back the white material is to use masking tape to on tiles and slap on the white paste in between the gaps..

Taxable freelancing income

Hi,

I have full time work and also freelancing.

the freelancing portion brings in annual total of around RM22K.

Question is do I need to declare the freelancing sum? The company I freelance with has my details which is being submitted to the IRB.

Even if the RM22K is considered fully taxable income (without subtracting any rebates or relief), the tax payable on this portion is around RM400.

I know for peace of mind, I should declare it and pay the govt. But I want to hear from those in a similar situation and those in the know what they have done.

Two choices really: do the right thing, declare and be done with it OR don;t in whicb case 3-7 years down the line I mught be summoned for an audit and be saddled with a hefty tax bill.
