SINGAPORE — The police are looking into racist and xenophobic comments relating to the Nepal floods and Singapore Airlines' investment in Air India, Senior Minister K. Shanmugam said on Sept 5.

Speaking to the media at Social Space @ Chong Pang, Shanmugam noted that some online comments to these issues have been "shameful, nasty and totally unacceptable", with references to snakes, curry, prata, black magic and other racist stereotypes.

The Coordinating Minister for National Security said he decided to call out people making such comments so that this behaviour does not become normalised, which then debases public discourse and affects social harmony.

"These people should be unmasked and dealt with, rather than be allowed to hide behind online anonymity," he said.

The Ministry of Digital Development and Information will also ask platforms to take such comments down as they are in breach of guidelines, he added.

Noting that nine Singaporeans are among those missing from the Aug 26 flash floods in Nepal that have killed more than 1,200 people, Shanmugam called out comments that said the missing "are not our own".

He also singled out a comment that said "all ABNNs look the same", the abbreviation being a derogatory term for Indians.

"What kind of people are these, who will come out and say these things about missing persons?" he asked.

"It really requires a type of person (who is) very ugly. And I think we need to call it out."

The minister also drew attention to the way Temasek's chief executive officer, Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara, and the investment giant's senior management were attacked online after it was reported that Air India was seeking about US$1.5 billion (S$1.9 billion) of investment from its shareholders, which include SIA.

Shanmugam said the attacks were "vile", and included comments that said the Temasek CEO would favour Air India because he is of Indian ethnicity.

"That is nasty and libellous," he said.

Following his interview, the Ministry of Home Affairs followed up with a list of 20 examples of racist comments it had come across. Most were posted in the comments sections of local news outlets' social media feeds.

The comments used a variety of slurs to refer to people of Indian origin, including the term "CECA faces". CECA is the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, a bilateral free trade pact signed between Singapore and India in June 2005.

Responding to media queries, SPH Media said it will work with the authorities to ensure regulatory compliance on its platforms.

SPH Media publishes nine newspaper titles, including The Straits Times.

"As the national news company, SPH Media and its titles are committed to responsible discourse, as reflected across our newsrooms' editorial positions," said its spokesman.

"We denounce inflammatory and denigratory remarks that run counter to our national core values."

Noting that it is a small group that have made such remarks, Shanmugam said it is important that Singapore does not allow a minority to "poison the entire well" of community relations.

For example, Singaporeans across all races have been generous in donating to relief efforts in Nepal, with the Red Cross having raised over $3 million.

Even so, there have been noticeably more racist comments of late, particularly when it comes to Indians in Singapore, said the minister, adding that some of these have originated and been fanned from overseas.

This is despite the Republic having taken a tough line to protect its multi-racial, multi-religious fabric, and to keep social harmony.

"Today it's Indians, tomorrow it will be the Malays, another day it will be the Chinese. How are you going to be socially harmonious in this situation?" he said.

While there is always latent racism among some sections of the public, recent attacks against Indians online have emboldened some people, he noted.

"After a while, if people will start saying these same things in public, and then when politicians see profit in it, it'll become part of the political and public and community discourse," he said.

While Singapore has not gotten there, this has already happened in many countries, including developed ones, said Shanmugam.

"I have had to speak on this more frequently than I would have liked, and it's a consequence of this (behaviour) becoming more frequent online," he said.

Shanmugam said it is important to acknowledge that Singaporeans are not immune to racism, and that political and community leaders bear some responsibility for the tenor of discourse.

"Our duty is to acknowledge that and work to make sure that (such racism) doesn't come out, rather than putting in hand grenades for it to come out," he said.

If, as a small, multiracial, multi-ethnic country, Singapore is divided along racial or religious lines, it will lose the unity that has made it strong.

"There will be feelings of ill will, suspicion, and we will all suffer," he added.

"We should not tolerate this. This is not who we are as Singaporeans."

KUANTAN: Police have identified the four people, including a married couple and their four-year-old son, who were killed in an 11-vehicle crash at Km110.3 of the East Coast Expressway (Eastbound) near Lanchang, Temerloh, last night.

Acting Pahang police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said the three family members were Muhammad Nazatul Nazmi, 32, his wife Nur Atiqah Sofiya Mohd Kazwan, 32, and their four-year-old son, who were travelling in a Proton S70.

The fourth victim was Seow Beng Wain, 55, from Shah Alam, Selangor, who was a passenger in a Honda CR-V.

"Police received information about the crash involving 11 vehicles — a cement tanker lorry, a bus and nine cars — travelling east at 10.55pm.

"Preliminary investigations found that the crash was believed to have been caused by the cement tanker losing control before hitting several other vehicles travelling slowly along the road.

"As a result, an 18-year-old man driving the Honda CR-V was seriously injured, while his father died at the scene.

"The Proton S70 driver, his wife and their son also died at the scene," he told a press conference at Dewan IT, Kompleks Alor Akar, here today.

The couple's son was identified as Muhammad Armaan Nazeef.

Azry Akmar said the tanker driver was seriously injured and is receiving treatment at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh.

He said the drivers and passengers of eight other vehicles, including an express bus and seven other vehicles, suffered minor injuries.

"All victims were taken to the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital for treatment, while post-mortems were conducted this morning.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and investigations are ongoing," he said.

China probes use of formaldehyde on cabbages

Authorities in China have launched an investigation into reports of formaldehyde being used to preserve the freshness of cabbages for human consumption.

Officials in the north-eastern Hebei province confirmed that they had verified footage showing individuals dipping cabbages in a solution before loading them onto trucks for transportation.

An environmental blogger first released the footage last week. Using formaldehyde, a colourless chemical used for preserving biological specimens that is known to cause cancer, for keeping food fresh is strictly prohibited in China.

China is the world's largest producer of cabbages, most of which are exported to neighbouring countries in Asia.

Police have taken legal action against the individuals involved, according to state media.

Officials are now moving swiftly to prevent panic and restore confidence by carrying out spot checks on markets across the country.

Chinese state media says investigators will also establish how widespread the practice is and take measures to trace affected vegetables.

Local authorities in Kangbao county said in a statement issued on Saturday: "Any illegal or non-compliant practices discovered will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law to ensure the safety of the vegetable supply."

Xinfadi market in Beijing, one of the major sources of fresh produce in the capital, issued a statement saying that it had investigated the source of its cabbages, adding that none of the affected vegetables had entered its market.

The incident has generated widespread media attention in China.

An editorial in the People's Daily wrote: "The wholesalers focused solely on their immediate economic interests while completely disregarding the lives and health of consumers. [They] crossed a legal red line and breached the moral bottom line."

China produces well over 30 million tonnes of cabbages each year, nearly half of the world's annual total. Vietnam, South Korea and Russia are among the largest export destinations for the vegetable.

Exposure to relatively high quantities of formaldehyde in some workplaces has been linked to some types of cancer in humans, but the effect of exposure to small amounts is less clear, according to the American Cancer Society.

'Duit kutu': RM1.7mil losses, 35 reports lodged

JITRA: Police have received 35 reports involving a woman linked to duit kutu (informal money pool), with total losses amounting to RM1.7 million.

Kubang Pasu district police chief superintendent Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim said the reports were lodged by victims aged between 23 and 53.

He said investigations were being conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Earlier, it was reported that three family members were missing after leaving their home in Taman Desa Bayanmas, Bukit Kayu Hitam, on July 20.

Following this, the woman's 62-year-old father lodged a police report at the Bukit Kayu Hitam police station last Monday after failing to trace his daughter, son-in-law and grandchild.

However, the couple surrendered themselves at the Kubang Pasu district police headquarters at 1.50am last Thursday and were remanded for four days, which ended today.

The remand period for the husband and wife, aged 39 and 36, has been extended by two more days from today to assist in investigations into the kutu debts.

PETALING JAYA: Two teenage girls were killed in a crash involving their motorcycle and a car driven by a 28-year-old man at Jalan Padang Tembak in Teluk Intan, Perak, yesterday.
Hilir Perak police chief Chua Kok Lian said police received a report on the incident at about 6.35pm.

“The crash is believed to have occurred when the man lost control while attempting to overtake a vehicle. He then collided with a motorcycle, another vehicle ahead and a young boy by the roadside.

Chua urged witnesses to assist the probe by contacting investigating officer Amirrudin Shafiei at 013-912-6959 or visiting the nearest police station.

Sinar Harian identified the teenagers as Nur Dania Arissa, 17, and Nur Atikah Abdullah, 16, who were students at SMK Seri Setia and SMK Raja Muda Musa, respectively.
