Cannot connect to internet :( why?

hi..sorry to trouble all the experts out there but i seriously need help with my computer..(*cough* i'm not very pro with computer stuff *cough*)

*ahem* so the thing is.. i just upgraded my computer to window XP a few weeks back but then when i tried to connect it to the internet..but it couldn't connect ..so here my dilemma..

1) what's the reason my com couldn't connect to the internet even though i've basically done everything (e.g: modem is connected,phone line connected) but the middle light keep blinking on the modem..

2) what's the solution for this problem?

I'm not a very fast learner and i will really appreciate it if any kind soul in lyn could guide me step by step to stop this problem which have been bugging me ever since..

And and..a GAZILLION thanks in advance!~

P/s: Then suddenly just yesterday I switch on the computer again and to my surprise it connect to the internet (which made me damn happy) then as i was surfing the net for less then 5 minutes..the connection went kong again and i was back to square one why? *sigh*

p/p/s: if you are wondering why i can log into internet to ask all these question..im using my laptop to connect to internet instead of the computer /boo (successfully connected..so it should not be the modem or the line's fault)

any idea?
