Hi all,

I'm TARC student that going to finish my 2 years Diploma on sept 2011. The course i took is Information Systems Engineering with latest CGPA of 3.5 on the latest transcript. I was confusing on which further education should i go for, hope to find some opinion over here. The 2 option is:

1. Study 1 year Top-up degree at various mid-rank UK university
- able to expose oversea culture and teaching style
- worry that 1 year top up might not provide enough skill or knowledge for future job

2. Study 2 years at local private University (Nottingham/Monash)
- High reputation over Malaysia
- oversea certificate, study fully at Malaysia and might learn more skill compare previous option

The situation is my parents support me for either option and i yet to make a final decision on which option should i take as the registration for UK study 1 year top up need to complete before 30June.

Hopefully you guys can provide me some of your opinion about such scenario. which option should i go for?

Thank you so much.

Apple Inc.'s Business Model For 2009

If you have read my post on the iPhone Nano, than you know how I feel about this rumored device… But from a business side, I can see why this would be a next logical step for Apple.

Infact, I think this is a great business model for Apple, forcing people to buy an iPod Classic to hold their music and leaving the iPhone as their ‘PDA’. While I think this is a great model for Apple as a company, for it’s consumers, however, it is costly. One of the biggest selling points for the original iPhone was that for the first time [we’ll forget about the ROKR] you could add your music from iTunes to your cell phone. Finally you could stop carrying two devices and now have one. By introducing a product with smaller capacity, you are going against one of the principle functions of the device.

With all that being said, I can see Apple going for cheaper alternatives. Now that the country is officially in a recession, people are watching what they spend their money. You can bet that smart-phone sales will begin to flaten out unless they are offered for a lot lower prices. We’ve seen Apple lower the prices of their notebooks, offering an introductory Macbook for $999, so why would this not apply to the iPhone?

The iPod brand is probably the most well known brand amongst electronics today. Once the iPod took off, you began to see a whole product line emerge. From Mini, to Shuffle, to Photo and Touch, the iPod has seen it all. And with Apple’s current line-up, they can reach every corner of the market. Most notably, however, was the aspect of creating more affordable iPod’s.

For most people who wanted an iPhone, they have gotten one by now. Even with Walmart selling them [starting today, December 28th] I don’t see there being a huge sales spike. The next logical step for them is to bring the price down on iPhone sales, penetrating this falling economy.

So what will Apple do in 2009? Well I believe that you are going to see many price-cut’s on their line-ups. The best thing Apple can do right now, is keep the huge annoucements till the economy starts turning around, and continue to sell their current products at more affordable prices. I could see the iMac starting at $999, and the Mac Pro at $2499 for starters. They have the MP3 player market in the bag, the iPhone is now the top selling handset in America, but the Mac is still a distant second.

In this next year I wouldn’t be suprised to see Apple drop the price on most of their products to get into a more affordable price-bracket. When the iPhone 3G came out at half the price of the first, it was very suprising. Normally Apple was a premium manufacturer, giving great quality products for a big price. But the iPhone 3G proved to be a winning formula, and I would bet that Apple will start to implement that with the Mac product line, too.

As I look ahead into the distant future, I see 2009 being the year of the recession. Where the iMac, Mac Pro, and Mac Mini see significant price-drops, and Apple see significant increase in marketshare. Not only that, but I am willing to guess that we will see a big management shift in the coming months. With Steve Jobs not giving the keynote at this Macworld Expo, as well as this being the last one Apple attends, I get the feeling there is going to be a shift in power, and the eventual phase-out of Steve Jobs. My only hope is that the next management can keep a similar, winning business model.

But when I think about 2010, I see that being the come-back. Apple could re-vamp their Mac line with a netbook [Macbook Mini?] and/or a tablet mac [Macbook Touch?]. Once the economy start to climb back up, I would imagen Apple will start to turn things around and look towards their next innovation. That, however, is very far away, and I think we need to be more focused on the present.

Things are going to change at this Macworld Expo. Whether it will be for the best or the worst remains to be seen. This could be the point where Apple takes off to control the communications marketshare, or it could be the beginning of the end for the Cupertino company. What are your thoughts?

[URL=http://www.jon4lakers.com/blog/2008/12/28/apple-incs-business-model-for-
2009.html]http://www.jon4lakers.com/blog/2008/12/28/apple-incs-business-model-for-2009.html[/URL]

Multi-Touch Swipe Gestures for iPhone Keyboard

Despite the Christmas holiday, the U.S. Patent Office continues to be churning away and has revealed this interesting new patent application from Apple called Swipe Gestures for Touch Screen Keyboards. The patent application is authored by Wayne Westerman. While we always enjoy reading research from the former Fingerworks founder, his multi-touch patent applications always seem to be more ambitious than practical. This latest document, however, details some very useful (and practical) additions to the iPhone's on screen keyboard.

Apple suggests the use of swipe gestures to be used on top of the iPhone's on screen keyboard in order to provide the user with quick access to common keys.
For example, erasing and basic punctuation insertion, directional swipes (also referred to herein as "swipe gestures") over the alphabetic keys can be used as an alternative to striking certain keys. Because the Space and Backspace keys are quite frequently used, they are logical candidates for the rightward and leftward swipes, respectively. Leftward and rightward swipes intuitively match the cursor travel caused by these symbols. Following this cursor movement analogy, the Enter/Return may be invoked by a downward swipe, and a Shift/Caps may be invoked by an upward swipe. Alternatively, as the Enter and Shift functions may be less frequently invoked, these may be substituted for other functions as well. One alternative mapping for the upward swipe, for example, could be to activate an alternative numeric and punctuation keypad or a particular punctuation symbol like an apostrophe or period.

A few sample gestures are depicted in the document:

Swipe down = return

Swipe left = delete

Aside from these single swipe gestures, multi-touch swipes (two fingers) could invoke other special functions. While a single finger left-swipe might delete a letter, a two finger left-swipe could delete a whole word, and a three finger left-swipe could delete a line. Similarly, a single finger right-swipe could add a space, while a two finger right-swipe could add a period. Up swipes and down swipes could also invoke different functions based on the number of fingers used.

Like with Apple's multi-touch notebook trackpads, these optional functions could provide advanced users with many useful shortcuts while not steepening the learning curve for novice users.

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/12/25/multi-...phone-keyboard/

Snapture Flash adds crappy flash to crappy iPhone

The iPhone's camera may be thoroughly eclipsed by several of its competitors, but the insane popularity of Apple's baby means that we've seen tons of accessories aimed at making that 2.1 megapixel sensor somewhat more useful -- like the Snapture Flash here, which tucks a xenon flash with red-eye reduction into a sleeve-type case. Although it's powered by the phone, it's apparently quite low-power -- SnaptureLabs estimates that you'll take 1000 shots before going dry -- and there's some sort of "speaker amplification" built in as well, just in case you're super into enhancing mediocre parts of the iPhone experience. Bad news? You'll have to jailbreak your phone to get the Snapture app working -- hopefully that'll be remedied by the time this thing ships. Check out some sample shots at the read link.

Engadget

iPhone Nano Rumors

iPhone Nano Ad(Leaked)

Mr. Blurry Cam leaked another ad, this time showing us an iPhone Nano in various colors. Is this gonna be the new iPhone Nano that everybody is talking about? Well, we don’t know yet, we have to wait a couple weeks to find out at MacWorld 09’ when Phil Schiller take the stage and deliver his “boring” keynote.

I personally believe it in the way that Apple need to get into the “Cheap Smartphone Market” and drop a $99.00 model with less features but the same elegance and functionality the iPhone 3G sports.

Leave a comment if you think this ad is the real thing or it’s just a Photoshop.

http://www.jon4lakers.com/blog/2008/12/27/...-ad-leaked.html

iPhone Nano Concept Photo?

It seems the "iPhone Nano" is the rumor that is going take the spotlight ahead of this year's Macworld, and while MacRumors is publishing these photos and rumors, we have some serious doubts about the likelihood of such a device. These doubts are based both in the quality of the sources as well as the practicality of introducing a new form factor to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform.

This image, which was submitted anonymously, provides a glance at what the rumored iPhone nano may look like. The images appear consistent with previously released case designs for the rumored device.

It seems the "iPhone Nano" is the rumor that is going take the spotlight ahead of this year's Macworld, and while MacRumors is publishing these photos and rumors, we have some serious doubts about the likelihood of such a device. This description suggests that long running rumors of a miniaturized iPhone could be true.

XSKN gained some notoriety earlier this year when it began selling cases for the then-unreleased iPhone 3G. The company again received headlines in September with case images of unreleased 4th Generation iPod Nano designs. Both times, some readers had questioned if these were simply publicity stunts, though both sets of images later turned out to be accurate.

This time, XSKN has not published images of the purported "iPhone Nano", but iDealsChina did so earlier this month. While we don't believe XSKN or any case manufacturers have official knowledge of Apple's future plans, there is enormous financial incentive for these companies to obtain early information about Apple's next product.

To add more uncertainty into the mix, we've heard that some of Apple's initial plans for Macworld may have been delayed. So, even if an iPhone Nano was originally in the works, we're not sure when we'd actually see one.

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/12/22/more-h...-manufacturers/

For completeness sake, we should report that XSKN has now posted the entire series of iPhone Nano cases for sale. Again, we have our doubts about the release of an iPhone Nano, yet it's hard to deny that the two previous case designs that were posted on XSKN did accurately predict upcoming products.

As with previous product shots, the actual iPhone graphics shown within the case are simply existing iPhone promotional shots and do not necessarily represent what the iPhone Nano interface would look like.

They said that Apple it’s experimenting with this Prototype that even have a new firmware running dubbed as “Prototype 3.0 (?)”. Read the rumor after the break and comment if you think that Apple will release this product some time in the future.

“At the top left of the picture there is a Location Lense. This is said to be forthcoming third-generation iPhone. This phone installed a new 8-hour battery for sustainable 3G video calls, 15-20 hours voice calls and 450 hours standby time. Phone with a built-in system of the iChat video chat with friends. Positive video call camera lens 3.0MP.
Your Wish List For Coming 2.2 iPhone Firmware

Hi,Is time for new poll and new topic.I wanted to survey all iPhone user opinion about coming iPhone 2.2 firmware. What you expect Apple to improve to make iPhone a better mobile phone device.

You are welcome to leave any comment here, sorry if i did'nt put your wish on the poll selection.

Future(New)Safari Interface

New stuff for 2.2!!

iPhone software 2.2 features Google Street View, mass transit directions

The T-Mobile G1's Google Maps Street View implementation is one of the slickest features of the first Android phone, but it looks like Apple's going to keep feature parity -- the latest builds of iPhone OS 2.2 seeded to developers have Street View, as well as the ability to give mass transit directions. That's pretty useful for cityfolk like us -- and we're also stoked that line-in audio is now supported in the SDK, giving devs the ability to create voice recorders and other interesting audio apps. Of course, there's no word on when 2.2 will actually arrive, but until then we suppose we'll live with regular, non-data-augmented streets. Lots of screenshots of the new features at the read link.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/26/iphone-...ass-transit-di/
