Eye health

Hi mummies and daddies!
I'm an optometry student from NIOS clinic, academic arm of Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital (THONEH). Our university is currently giving free eye check up to everyone, including children. Very often, children will not complain of blur vision, that is why it is very important for children (especially below 8 years old) to get their eyes checked. Because if they do develop amblyopia aka lazy eye, prompt treatment can reverse this condition.

Children who are suffering from blur vision will probably think it's normal or they may not notice it since the vision deteriorates really slowly. Some of them may know it but keep quiet because they don't like the thought of wearing glasses. They are probably afraid that parents will scold them for "spoiling their eyes". Children who have lazy eye would usually develop tropia (more commonly known as squint or cock eye) if not treated. Because the brain would suppress the blur image perceived, and therefore the eye would shut down and muscles would get weaker. When the eye is not in use, it will either drift in or out. When a child has lazy eye, chances are they won't see things as blur because the better eye is working. They would most probably only notice vision in one eye is really blur when they cover the better eye.

Many parents nowadays love giving their children the tablets, laptops, phones etc to play with just to make them sit still. But the light emitted from these devices are harmful to the eyes, even to adults. Besides that, children like to use these devices and doing their homework at a very close distance (to their reading material) in the dark, lying down. All these bad habits can also harm the eyes and cause short sighted. Thus, it is important for you and your children to come for an eye examination.

Do let me know if you wish to know more. Thanks

Problem with near work

Does anyone experience eye strain, headache, sleepiness or difficulty concentrating when reading or doing computer work after 30 minutes or less? Do you find the words of your reading material moving or out of focus? Having problem (not clear, eye strain) when shifting your gaze from your reading material to looking at somewhere far (like TV, whiteboard in class, projector screen) and vice versa?

These are really common that we sometimes overlook, thinking everything is normal, except it's not. It has something to do with your eye muscles (too strong or too weak). We call it binocular vision anomaly.

If you find your children complaining of these problems, stop scolding them for being lazy or giving excuses as that may not be it. School children or even adults who have these problems will tend to avoid reading and doing near work. Thus, school results or even work performance will be affected.

These conditions can be treated by doing some eye exercise, or vision therapy. However, you have to get your eyes checked before doing any therapy. Not all therapy is the same and they might not be suitable for you. The therapies do not include reducing your eye power. Only to train your eye muscles functions.

My university (optometry school), academic arm of Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital, is offering free eye check up and we can help you identify and manage the problem. You can PM me if you wish to know more.

Free eye check and contact lenses

What is this for?
My university, National Institute of Ophthalmic Sciences (NIOS) is offering free check up for everyone, regardless of age. This institute is an academic arm of Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital. No extra charges or purchsses needed. We are doing our internship, thus everything is free. Final year students will be checking your eyes, with certified optometrists by our sides.

Why should I get my eyes checked?
You might think thay you are still young and don't have any eye problems. What you don't realize is young people have a lot of eye problems as well. Especially binocular vision problem. That means using both eyes together to see an object or reading. This is a very common problem for people who like to read, use their phones, ipad and computers a lot. You may think that it is common to get headache when you are using these devices, but it is not. It is because your eyes are finding it hard to focus, thus causing headache.
Besides that, it is important for people who have family history of glaucoma, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macula edema, age related macula degeneration etc, to get their eye checked to have an early diagnosis and management as these eye diseases can be inherited.

Should my children get their eyes checked?
YES! Many children have blur vision on one eye when they are young, but they don't inform their parents. In the long run, it would cause amblyopia, or lazy eye. Thus, only one eye would be functioning more than the other. Critical age to treat this condition is below 8 years old. This is because children's eyes are still developing. Once they past this age, it is difficult to treat it.
If you notice your child have squint (cock eye, one eye turned in or outward), it is also important to get their eyes checked and get early treatment.
Children would most likely not complain of blur vision if their vision is blur since young. As parents, it is important to ask the children to compare the vision between both eyes, to ensure that there is no lazy eye. Besides that, children don't complain of blur vision because they will either think it's normal or they will think something is wrong with them, so they will not voice it out. If you notice your child is squeezing their eyes to focus, there is a high possibility that your child is not seeing well. If you have family history of lazy eye and squint, your child should get their eyes tested. If your child is premature, has low birth weight, they should get their eyes checked too.

Where is this?
The institute is just next to Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital.

Address:
3rd Floor,
NIOS Building,
Lorong Utara B,
46200 Petaling Jaya

Opening hours:
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday - 9am - 4pm
Tuesday and Friday - 9am - 1pm
The eye check up would take 2 hours

Contact Details:
Cindy
0173221232

What tests would be done?
1. Check for eye power
2. Check for muscle strength and ability to focus at a near object
3. Check for lazy eye and squint
4. Colour vision assessment
5. Glaucoma and cataract assessments
6. Anterior segment assessment (dry eye, foreign body etc)
7. Diabetic eye diseases assessment

We do have contact lenses assessments as well. Free pair of contact lenses will be given to those who are suitable. If you don't feel comfortable with your own contact lenses, just bring them and we will inspect the lenses and see if the lenses are the right sizes for your eyes. Soft lenses and hard (RGP) lenses are available. Contact lenses are not clothes. There are no one-size-fits-all contact lenses, and not everyone can wear contact lenses. Everything we do in the clinic is free! No profit is made in the process!

Free eye check and contact lenses

Hi everyone.. I'm an optometry student (final year) in National Institute of Ophthalmic Sciences (NIOS), the academic arm of Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital. My university is currently offering free eye check up to everyone, regardless of age, gender or race.

Why is it free?
Because the eye examination will be conducted by us, final year student. However, we would be supervised by certified optometrists. Whatever we have checked, will be confirmed by them to ensure that you will not be misdiagnosed.

Opening hours:
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday- 9am-4pm
Tuesday, Friday - 9am-1pm

How long?
About 2 hours per person. If we found that you have some problems (age related macula edema, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy), the eye check would take a longer time or you might need to come back for further assesment (eyes dilated). Appointment is needed beforehand. There will not be extra charges or purchases needed. If we find that you have dry eyes or may need glasses, you can go buy them from any pharmacy or optical shop respectively. We do not earn a single cent from you.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/150x100q90/540/4MOghO.jpg

Why 2 hours, you ask? Because we check for:
1. Eye power
2. Lazy eye, squint (cock eye)
3. Eye muscles function
4. Ability to focus while reading closely
5. Catarct
6. Glaucoma
7. Diabetic retinopathy
8. Colour vision
9. Age related macula edema
10. Dry eyes

And of course there are so many more conditions. Children who just started going to school should get their eyes checked for early diagnosis and mamagement of lazy eye and squint. This is because it is harder to treat in children above 8 years old. Adults who have diabetes and hypertension are more prone to getting eye diseases. Just like medical examination, everyone should get their eyes checked at least once a year.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/150x100q90/912/7rr1Cn.jpg

Our university offer free contact lens fitting as well. If you are suitable, or the contact lenses fit you, you are entitled to get a FREE pair of contact lenses as stated above. However.. Only soft contact lenses would be free. If you wish to wear hard lens/RGP lens, we can try the lenses on you. If it fits you, we can give you the parameters and you may order from optical shop (not all) or from eye clinic.

THE ONLY CONDITION:
You must not be an existing patient in Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital!
